FAIR SHOCK ABSORBING ATTACHMENT FOR WELL CASINGS File'd Oct. 4, 1919 l.aslug.14,-1923.f v v I LttSdZt unirso STATES PATEN I RALPH EMERSON FAIR, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR T LUCEY MANU- FACTURING CORPORATION OF TENNESSEE, 0F CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, A CORPORATION OF'TENNESSEE.
SHOOK-ABSO'RBING ATTACHMENT FOR WELL CASINGS.
Application filed October 4, 1919. Serial No. 328,450.
To all whom it may concern: such block, in place of the shackle or bail Be it known that I, RALPH E". FAIR, a citiwhich is usually employed. For this pur- 55 zen of the United'States, residing at Chatpose said hangers at their upper ends protanooga, in the county of Hamilton and ject beyond the stem 2 when the latter is 5 State of Tennessee, have invented certain fully raised; and their projecting portions new and useful Improvements in Shock-Abare formed with alined eyes 5 in which may sorbing Attachments for Well Casin s; and be secured a cross pin 6 employed as a direct 60 I do declare the following to be a ful clear, pivotal connection between said hangers and and exact description of the invention, such said block. as will enable others skilled in the art to The stem 2 is acted on by one ormore which it appertains to make and use the helical expansion springs 7; these surround same, reference being had to the aecompanythe stem and exert their thrust against the 6 ing drawings, and to the letters and figures cross head 1 and the end-of a sleeve 8 within of reference marked thereon, which form a which they are partlyhoused when the stem part of this specification. is raised. The sleeve 8 is backed by a/nut This invention relates to an improved re- 9 secured upon the upper end of the stem silient suspension device especially adapted and by its engagement with the cross head 70 for use in withdrawing the sectional pipe 1 limits the downward movement of the employed in drilling wells by the rotary stem. Below the cross head the stem is process. formed with a collar 10 which, by its en- The principal objects are to provide a gagement with the cross head, limits the upsimply constructed and sturdy device which ward movement of thestem as effected by 5 will have suitable shock absorbing proper\ the springs 7. At its lower end the stem is ties, which will enable the pipe to be pulled pivotally connected to links 11 which take out with greater speed and in a morefacile tn; place of the bail or shackle usually emmanner, and which may be conveniently ployed and carry the trunnion bar 12 of a combined with the travelling block of the swivelled book 13 by which the device is 80 hoisting rig. connected to the pipe. For the connection The invention consists in certain novel of the links 11 the stem 2 is formed at its features of structure and-combinationwhich lower end and just below the collar 10 with will be set forth as the description proceeds. an eye 14 in which is fitted a pin 15,, the

The opera- The relatively movable parts are a cross tion of the hoisting rope is arrested as soon 95 head 1 and a stem 2 operating through a cenas a tool joint, by which adjacent sections tral opening in the cross head. At each side of the pipe are connected, is brought above of vthe stem the cross head is supported by the floor of the derrick. I parallel hangers 3; these preferably project At such time the usual means, well known through openings in the cross head and at to those skilled in the art, is employed to 9 their lower ends areprovided with nuts 4 or hold the piping below the exposed tool joint equivalent enlargements upon which the in the position to which it has been raised cross head rests. The hangers 3 are and the elements of the. joint are disconnectfashioned whereby they may be inserted in ed. i As soon as the co-operating threads of the travelling block, (not shown) that is to such elements have been disengaged the say between the parallel frame plates of springs 7 act to raise the section of pipe above the tool 'oint; and the section thus raised carries with it the associated element of the tool joint. i. e., the tool joint pin, lifting it clear of the other elements, the tool joint box which is associated with the adjacent section of pipe still remaining in the well. Thus the springs 7 render it unnecessary to operate the twisting mechanism in order to lift the upper element of the tool joint clear of the lower element and it follows that a substantial saving of time and work is effected.
' Having fully described my invention I claim:
1. In a device of the type set forth the combination of a pair of hangers, a cross-bar supported at their lower ends, a stem movable through the cross bar between the hangers, a sleeve having a bearing against the upper end of the stem and terminating short of the cross bar, a helical expansion spring exerting its thrust against the cross bar and the end of the sleeve. the stem having below the cross bar a collar which engages the cross bar to limit the upward movement of the stem and having an eye below said colla r. a pin fitted in said eye, and hook-supporting links hung from saidpin.
2. In a device of the type set forth the combination of a pair of hangers, a cross bar supported at their lower ends, a stem movable through the cross bar between the hangers, a sleeve having a bearing against the upper, end of the stem and terminating short of the cross bar, a helical expansion spring exerting its thrust against the cross bar and the. end of the sleeve, the stem having below the cross bar a collar which engages the cr s bag to limit the upward movement of the stem and having an eye below said collar, a pin fitted in said eye, and hook-supporting links hung from said pin. said hangers having their upper ends formed for insertion into a travelling block and provided with alined eyes located above
