Description
Patented Aug. I4, 1923.
mata
v Ituri-I s. scHaoEDara, or CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
application lfiled June 5,
" T all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, RUTH S. M. Sermon- DER, a citizen ofSweden, with a pending application for II. S. citizenship, and residing at'Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have Vinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toilet Articles, of which the followinois a specification.
My invention relates to toilet accessories and has particular referenceV to devices for curling, marcelling or waving the hair, and its objects are to provide a device that is light, easily applied and removed, and which will produce a more permanent waving or curling of the hair than is accomplished by the devices heretofore provided. A further object isto -malIe my device of a form and construction which adapts it to be worn as a hair ornament lwhile acting as a curling Y n() device.
And with the above named general objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described in detail, illustratedV in the accompanying drawing,
and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing- Y Figure 1 is the outline of the upper portion of a womans figure showing the application of my invention.
`Figure 2 is a view of the device in theJ position in which it is heldin Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of Figure 2 in avertical plane at right angles to the plane of Figure Figure 4 is a view of the device in its operative or closed position taken inthe plane of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is similar to Figure 4, but in a plane at right'angles thereto.
In the several views 2 and 3 are preferably arms or branches .in the form of elongated Y Wire loops which form aA claspbetween the members of which is clamped the coil or winding of hair -5- on an intermediate arm, brancher pin 4. The members 2, 8 and 4 may be made in any suitable manner and of various configurations, but by making` the 50. lops or arms out of wire makes the structure lighter than if made of plate metal. In Figure 1 the device.v or curler. is Vshown as held b v the left handwhile the right hand iswinding a lock. or strands. of hair on the 5 intermediate member 4. The latter is preferably wider, as shown, at its outer or free 1922. serial No. 566,061.
end so as tc wedge the hair wound upon it tightly inwardly or toward the juncture of the three arms 2, 3 and 4, or to guard against any tendency of the coil to slide oil the member 4. But its outlines may be' varied in numerous ways.
The arm 2 is perhaps most conveniently placed innermost, or against the head of the user, in which event the arm 3. will be the outer or exposed arm and the only part that is exposed to view, and while this outermost arm is shown as of plain wire loo-p design it is obvious that it may take any of the well known, or other, ornamental hair pin or hair ornament designs. My improvement may therefore be Worn throughout the day as well as during the usual resting periods. As suggested in Figure 1 a plurality of these hair curlers may be arranged to serve, when designed for that purpose, as hair ornaments as well as curlers.
The present improvement is designed both to facilitate the usually inconvenient process of hair curling and to give greater permanency to the curls when formed by placing the curl 5 under pressure between the arms 2 and 3 while it is becoming set, as illus trated in Figures 4 and 5. The full lines of Figure 2 show substantially the relative positions of the arms while the winding is done on the arm 4. When the winding is completed the arm 3 is folded on or over the arms 2 and 4, the arms moving together on their pivot portions at 10 on a band or pivot member 11 to which the arm 4 is preferably secured at its ends-12 and 13. When folded the arms 2 and 3 are held clasped upon the coil 5 by a catch 7 pivoted at 6 and having a concave or hook portion 8 which .is engaged with the free end of the arm 3. The catch '7 has a linger lQ'rip por tion, or outstanding lug or lip 9 which. when in operative position Vprojects slightly bevond the arm 3 as shown in Figure 4. whereby it is made conveniently accessible to hook or unhook the clamp of the cur-ler. The greater the tension upon the member the more securely will it bold the parts together. At the same time it is instantaneously releasable by a slight outward pull on the lip or lug 9.
I cl aim as my invention- 1. hair curler consisting of three loops of wire forming arms. said arms being pivoted together at their ends forfree angular movement relative to each other, one
of said arms adapted to serve as u Wndng member or core upon which a leek of huir may be Wound :1s :L Coil, and means for sustaining ,pressure by the other arms upon said coil to increase its perlnaneney.
2. A huir Curiel con 'sting of a bar 0r arm upon which a coil of hair may be Wound,
' pvotally movable loop-shaped arms, J[he opposite side of each loop to -he pressed lnto and form depressions in said coil und lne-111s for Clampmg same zlgalns sind coll.
