teases rice,
CHARLES E. PRATT, 01E PLYMOUTH, WISCONSIN,
CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed February 4, 1922. Serial lilo. 534,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. PRATT, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan and 5 State of Visconsim'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to devices for extinguishing cigarettes.
It comprises a receptacle adapted to receive water, a sponge, means for supporting the sponge so as to contact with the surface of the water and for rotating the sponge,
and a cap having an opening for the cigarette.
smouldering cigarettes and cigars prove dangerous and. unpleasant. The invention aims at the provision of devices for, readily extinguishing lighted cigarettes and cigars. and the structure is designed to make an exceedingly simple and convenient extinguishing of the lighted ends. The cap, being of conical shape downwardly directed, facilitates the centering of the lighted end so that the cigarette needs merely to be dropped into the opening.
lhe object of the device is the provision of a structure simple in its operation and convenient. The sponge may be readily positionedbetween a pair of gripping plates and operates by capillary attraction to draw up the water so that a complete saturation results.
Agaim the device is durable. If one portion of the sponge should become burned, mere rotation in a convenient manner turns another side,.sothat an efiective extinguishing surface is maintained for an indefinite period of time.
Other objects of the invention are Sim-- plicity of construction, the receptacle and top being made of sheet metal, and a minimum number of parts being utilized.
' Other objects are compactness and neatness of appearance.
With the aboveand other objects in view, which will appear as the descriptionproceeds, myinvention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the manner in which a cigarette may be extinguished, and
Figure 2 is a central sectional elevation through the container.
Cylindrical container 10 has cap 11 secured thereto by indented threads 12 so that the parts are capable of ready separation. Rod 13 projects through an opening in the Wall of container 10, being urged inwardly by spring 14 contacting with a plate 15, which is substantially a segment of a-sphere, said plate being provided with teeth 16 for engaging sponge 17. Rod 13 has a head 18 thereon adapted to contact with the wall of container 10 and thus limit the inward movement of the parts.
On the other side of sponge 17 a second plate '19, rod 20, and spring 21 are positioned, and plates 19 and 15 are adapted to compress the sponge 17 betweenthem. and secure it in position with its lower end 1mmersed slightly in water 22. Rod 20 has a knob 23 thereon by which it may be rotated. Thus the sponge 17 is capable'of convenient di 'tal rotation so that an eiiicient extinguis in surface on same may always be presented helow opening 24: in top 11.
It will be noted that top 11 is of truncated, conical form, safe for the peripheral flange, and that consequently a centering action results adapted to present the lighted ends of the ci arette in the proper place for extinguis merit.
I claim The combination. of a cylindrical con-
