Bnirr BUCKLE.
Application ined May 22, 1922, semi No. 562,582.
To all whom it may concern.' y
Be it known that'I, DANIEL S. BEARS, a citizen f the United States', residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful mprovementsin Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specication. Y Y
AThis invention relates to belt buckles of the class adapted to automatically grip and bind abelt in Vadjusted position about the' body. of the wearer, and the object of this invention is to provide such a belt buckle with a gripping lever having a rolling cam action for binding the free end of the belt in the body of the buckle and said gripping plate being provided with another gripping member for fixedly securing the opposite end of the belt to the buckle.
A further object of this invention is to so construct the `buckle that the gripping member for securing the iiXed end of the belt, will project beyond the body of the buckle and be covered by the extending of the free end of the belt thereover thereby permitting the buckle body to be made very thin.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a loop into which the free end of the belt may be passed and to provide means for attaching this loop to the clamping plate.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully dethe belt to the cam clamp-plate.
Figure 4 is a view of the under side of the i buckle with the belt removed.
It is found in practice of advantage to provide a clamp plate having a rolled end portion of cam shape for adjustably binding the free 4end of theY belt in the buckle body, and also to pivotally mount a binding lever clamp on said clamp plate for securing the Xed endof the belt to this clamp-plate and to extend the free end of this clamp plate with itsV binding clamp mounted thereon, beyond the body of the buckle and in position to be covered by the free end portion of the belt, which passes over it thus reducing the working thickness of the buckle body and clamping mechanism to the minimum.
It is also found of advantage to attach a belt end-receiving loop to the clamp plate insteadrof fastening this loop to the belt itself whereby any ordinary strap, without special preparation, may be employed as a finished belt, and the following is a detailed description of one means by which these results may be accomplished With reference to the drawings, the body of the buckle comprises essentially a faceplate 10 the same being provided with inwardly turned edge iianges 1l, each being shown as provided with inturned belt-guiding portions l2 adjacent one end of the body portion, while at the other end the flange is preferably slightly deepened as at 13, and pierced to receive as at 14 the laterally eX- tending pivots 15 of the clamp plate 16. The pivot end of this clamp-plate is preferably rolled over outwardly as at 17 to provide a substantially cam-shaped gripping portion for binding the free end 18 of the belt against the inner surface of the front plate 10. This rolling gripping faced member may be corrugated or roughened as at 19 if desired, to better-grip and retain the belt in the buckle body.
The free end of this cam plate 16 is provided with outwardly turned edge pivot flanges 20 which are p ierced at 21 to receive the pivot pins 22 of t e binding lever clamp 23 which is provided with an inturned gripping edge 24 and an operating lever portion 25, and the outer end of this cam plate 16 carrying this binding lever clamp preferably extends beyond the end of the buckle body and is designed to be covered by the extending of the free end of the belt thereover, as shown in Figure 1.
It will be seen by this construction that if the ears 2l were turned inwardly towards the body of the wearer instead of outwardly or in the opposite direction towards the body of the buckle, they would make the buckle more than twice as thick as though turned outwardly as shown in applicants construction. Then-again by turning the ears outvvardly they utilize the space required byY the cam 17 and by extending the end of the clamp plate beyond the buckle body the free end of this plate is free to receive a greater range of adjustinfr swingwithout bringing up against the unc er side face or the buckle body and this portion of the clamping mechanism is completely Vcovered by the positioning of the free end of the belt, as illustrated in Figurel.
In some instances it is found of advantage to provide a loop 26 Yfor receiving the free end o'll the belt and to attach the same to the buckle instead of to the belt as is usual so that the buckle will be complete and to ac# coinplish this in a simple and elective Way, have provided a transverse slot 27 in the free end oiI the clamp-plate 16 through which a strap 28 is passed with its free ends secured by the clamping rivet 29 to the loop 26.
lvly improved belt buckle is strong and durable and very practical in its construction.
