To all whom it concern:
'Be it known that I, JOHN W. MOORE, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Roanoke, 'inthe county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, haveinvented anewand useful Jack, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matterof this application is a lifting jack of that general:type in which the screw does not rotate, rotation being imparted to a nut which is threaded on the screw. The invention aims to provide a novel means for rotating thenut, to provide novel means for holding the constituent parts of the jack together, to provide a jack which .will operate ant-ifrictionally and be accessible in places where room is limited, and, generally, to improve and to "enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proiceeds,.the invention resides in the combinationand arrangement. of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described. and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of;what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation a jack constructed in accordance'with theinvention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section wherein parts appear in elevation; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 2.
The device forming the subject matter of this-application includes a base 1 provided at its upper end with a reduced neck 2 defining a shoulder 3. A ball race 4 is formed in the upper end of the neck 2. There is a chamber 5 in the lower end of the base 1, the base being provided with a reduced bore 6, extended'upwardly from the chamber 5 through the neck 2.
A nut 7 is disposed above the neck 2 and is provided in its lower edge with a ball race 8 cooperating with the ball race 4 in the nut 7 has an outwardly extended flange 10.
A retaining sleeve 11 is threaded on the neck 2 andis provided at its upper end with an inwardly extended flange 12, overhanging the flange 10 on the nut 7, to hold the nut on the base 1 for rotation. The nut 7 is provided with a ratchet 14 having teeth so constructed that, through the instrumentality of a reversible pawl, hereinafter described, rotation may be imparted to the nut 7 in opposite directions.
A collar 15 surrounds the ratchet 14 of the nut 7 and is supported on the upper end of the sleeve 11, the collar having a tubular extension 16 adapted to receive the inner end of a detachable handle 17. The collar 15 has an outwardly extended boss 18 provided with a transverse groove or seat 19 in its outer end. A compartment 20is formed in the collar 15 and in the boss 18, there being a reduced bore 21 in the outer end of the boss, the bore communicating with the compartment 20.' The device includes a pawl comprising a head 22 slidable in the compartment 20, and a reduced stem 23 slidable in the reduced bore 21, the head 22 coacting with the ratchet 14 on the nut 7 and being beveled as indicated at 24. A compression spring 25 surrounds a portion of the stem 23"of the pawl and is located in the com- '20. The pawl includes a grip whereby-the pawl may be manipulated on occasion. The grip may be in the form of a nut 26, having wings 27 The nut is threaded on the stem 23 of the pawl and is held thereon by upset ting the threads on the stem of the pawl, or in any other suitable way. The function of the grip on the pawl will be explained hereinafter, but it is to be observed at this place that a simple wing nut is used in making the grip. V
A collar 28 surrounds the upper end of the nut 2 and constitutes means for holding the collar 15 on the nut for rotation. The collar 28 has oppositely disposed openings 29 communicating with an internal groove 30 in the collar. The internal groove 30 in the collar 28 cooperates with an external groove 31 on the nut 7. A securing element 32 which may be a cotter pin, is mounted in the openings 29 of the collar 28 and in the groove 30 of the collar and in the groove 31 of the nut 7, the cotter pin or its equivalent constituting means for holding the collar on the nut.
A screw 33 is threaded into the nut 7 and extends downwardly through the bore 6 of the base 1 into the chamber 5 in the base. At its upper edge, the screw 33 is supplied with a head 3st which may be rigidly mounted on the screw; V
In practical operation, rotation is i1nparted to the nut 7 through the instrumentality of the ratchet 14, the pawl 22-23, the collar 15 and the handle 17. hen the nut 7 is rotated, the screw 33 moves upwardly, without turning, the load on the head 34 of the screw holding the screw against rotation. When the collar 15 is rotated reversely, to enable the pawl 22-23 to secure a new hold on the ratchet 14- ot the nut '7, the beveled end 24: oi. the pawl clicks over the ratchet, the spring 25 constituting means for advancing the pawl, and the wings 27 on the grip or nut 26 sliding in the groove orseat which is formed in the outer end of the boss 18 on the collar 15. Through the instrnmentality of the grip 26, the pawl 2223 may be retracted. and rotated, to effect a reversal of the pawl, the wings 27 on the grip being permitted to reenter the groove 19. When the pawl has been reversed, as above explained, a swinging movement of the lever 17 will impart reverse rotation to the nut 7, and the screw 33 will be lowered.
