RECORD LIFTER;

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. THoMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Record Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends the provision of an article handling device and is especially adapted for use in handling phonograph records.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a device by means of which phonograph records may be placed upon or removed from the turn table of a talking machine and thus prevent the transfer of oil, grease or other injurious matter to the record, from the hands of the operator.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which is simple of construction and operaip and hold a record or similar article witgi out damage to the same.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a view partly in section showing a portion of a phonograph with the invention in use, a record being shown in section upon the turn table.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the record raised, preparatory to its removal.

Figure 3 is a plan view with the parts in the position shown in Figure 1.

Figure 4 is an enlarged central vertical sectional view of the device removed from '13 a record, all of which may be of the usual or any preferred type.

The invention which is designed for handling the record when the latter is being placed in position'upon the turn table, or

removed therefrom, comprises a standard which includes a tubular member 14 having at one end a ring 15, by means of which the device may be suspended from a hook when not 1n use. The opposite end of the tubular member 14 1s open and receives a rod 16 wh ch forms a portion of the standard and which Is freely slidable in the tubular member 14.

Pivotally secured to the tubular member 14; are radially extendin arms 17. These arms may be secured to't e tubular member 1n any suitable manner, the means shown consisting of providing the tubular member with an annular flange or collar 18, to which the arms 17 are secured by means of links 19, whereby free pivotal movement of the arms is permitted. These arms are formed of any suitable material and are provided at their outer endswith gripping elements 20 and as these elements are adustably connected to the arms, the latter may be regulated to accommodate the device to records of difierent diameters. As a means of securing the gripping elements 20 to the arms 17, the latter are provided with oppositely located inwardly extending guide flanges 21, which receive the gripping elements 20, while these gripping elements are provided with elongated slots 22 which reoeive studs 23 carried by the. arms 17. The

outer ends of the gripping elements 20 are provided with hooks 24 for engagement over the .edgespf the records and these hooks carry cushloning elements 25 so as to prevent injury to the record from contact by the gripping arms.

The gripping elements 20 are removably secured to the arms 17, so that if desired they may be detached and other gripping elements substituted, such for example as that shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. These gripping elements are indicated at 26 and are provided with slots 27 to receive the studs 23, while at their outer extremities the gripping elements 26 are provided with relatively large or wide hooks 28 for engagement with records of the Edison type. The gripping elements 26 are provided with cushioning elements 29.

Secured to the outer or lower end of the rod 16 is an annular flange 30 which forms a base or stop for contact with the upper face of the record 13, while depending centrally from this flange is a socketed stud 31 for en a ement o er the pp wnvemd end of the stud 12. Extending from the flange 30 and spaced from the rod 16 is a sleeve 33, while surrounding this rod and having one end positioned within the sleeve and its opposite end bearing against a shoulder provided at the lower end of the tubular member 14, is a coiled spring 34 which acts to resist the longitudinal movement of the rod 16 inward within the tubular member 14. Extending from the sleeve 33 are curved spring arms so, the latter passing through openings 36 rovided in an annular flange 37 WlllCh is spaced from the flange or collar 18.

In the use of the invention, the socketed stud 31 is arranged within the opening of a record with the latter bearing against the cushion 32 of the base or flange 30 and the hooks 24 are engaged over the edge of the record. The latter may then be lifted by holding the tubular member 14 and the socketed member then positioned upon the top of the stud 12. A downward pressure upon the tubular member 14 will cause the free ends of the spring arms 35 to be engaged by the arms 17 and as the downward movement of the tubular member 14 will cause the arms 17 to move radially outward, their contact with the free ends of the spring arms 35 will cause said radial arms to move upward away from the edge of the record to release the latter. To remove the record, the socketed stud 31 is placed over the stud 12 and the tubular member 14 compressed so as to move the radial arms 17 outward until the hooks 28 engage over the edge of the record.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention what is claimed is z 1. A device for lifting records from phonographs comprising in combination with a turntable stud, a tubular member, a rod slidable within and projecting from one end thereof, a spring for resisting the inward movement of the rod, arms carried by and extending radiall from the tubular member, an annular ange located at the outer end of the rod, a socketed stud extending from the bottom of the flange to receive the turn table stud, means carried by the arms for engagement with a record and means 1 connecting the rod and tubular member, whereby the arms may be moved to an engagirig or disengagin position 2. device for lifting records from phonographs comprising in combination with a turntable stud, a tubular member, a rod slidable within and projecting from one end thereof, a spring for resisting the inward movement of the rod, arms carried by and extending radiall from the tubular memher, an annular ange located at the outer end of the rod, a socketed stud extending from the bottom of the flange to receive the turn table stud, means carried b the arms for engagement with a record an means including outwardly curved members connecting the rod and tubular member, whereby the arms may be moved to an engaging or disengaging position.
