Description

B. F. DAVIS BIT CLAMP Filed Sept. 50 1920 ATTORNEY INVENTOR Patented Aug. 14, 1923.
STATES af r W I BENJAMIN F. DAVIS, 0F SPUR, TEXAS.
BIT CLAM'P.
T 0 asZZ w 710m it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spur, in the county of Dickens and State or: Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bit Clamps, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil well drilling apparatus and has for its object the provision of clamping device adapted for association with the joints of drills or the like. which are commonly screwed together, and which is so constructed as to prevent any poss ble unscrewing and consequent separation of sections so as to avoid the delay and expense. of fishing for broken tools or disconnected sections.
in important and more specific object is the provision of a connection of this charactcr which includes a pair of clamping members dctachably engageable upon sections of a drfll or the like. the clan being formed at their meeting ends with interfitting tongues which will positively prevent any relative rotation of threadedly connected members.
An additional object is the provision of a device of th's char cter wbichwill be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture. highly eillcient in use, durable in service, easy to" apply, and a general improvement in the art.
llith the above and other objects and ad- 'vantag es in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in wnich- Figure .1 applied to tions, 7
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, and Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Referring; more particularly to the drawings the letters A and B designate the sections of a drill. or other device. In ordinary practice these sections are screwed tonether and it frequentlyoccurs that from the continual jar of drilling the sections are relatively rotated and eventually become separated which necessitates the costly operation of fishing, by means of various tools, for the detached section or sections.
In carrying" out my invention provide a pair of members clamped upon each section is a s de elevation of my device the meeting ends of drill see- A and B of the drilling mechanism and each of these clamping members comprises substantially semi-cylindrical members 10 which are hingedly connectedat one edge, as shown at 11, and which have their other edges formed with flanges 12 through which pass suitable clamping bolts 13. It will be observed that there are provided two sets of the members 10 which are identical in construction and which are clamped upon adjacent sections A. and B of the drill. Formed upon the adjacent ends of the clamping members 10 are interfitting tongues 14,- which are engaged when the sections or members 10 are applied and bolted into position.
When my clamping devices are in position as above described and as clearly shown, it will be seen that inter-engagement oi the tongues 14 on the adjacent ends of the members 10 will positively prevent any relative otation of the clamping members and consequently any possible relative rotation of the drill. sections A and B. I have described the bolts as connecting the flanges 12 on the clamping members though it is easily conceivable that I may employ any other suitable means for holding these clamping members in embracing engagement with the drill sections.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
Means for securing together the sections a well drilling rod, the ends of the rod being formed with enlargements defining shoulders, comprisiig a plurality of similar nping members engaged upon the ena genients and formed at their outer ends with inturned flanges engaging said shoulders, said clamping members being formed at one edge with a plurality of intereng aging pivotally connected knuckles and being provided at their other edges with flanges detachably connected, and the confronting edges of said clamping member being formed with a plurality of interiitting tongues and grooves.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
BENJAMIN I DAVIS.
