with the toothed. advancing pawl 16 is in the position illusswinging member 18 in the opposite direction, that is in the direction to place the spring 19 under tensin,is etl'ected preferably through a stop 22 secured on the main frame 1 in such a position that the swinging member 18 is moved as the carriage approaches that end of its moven'ient where the cutting action begins to take place. A retaining pawl 23 pivoted to the strap 13 cooperates with the ratchet wheel or member 15 to re tain the latter in the position to which it is adjusted, said retaining pawl being acted upon by a spring 24 to hold such pawl against the tooth wheel.
One oi the important features of this in vention is the construction and control of an advance preventing detent for preventing the advance movement of the toothed member 15 under the action of the rotary cutter while the latter is slicing material on the material supporting carriage 5, the knife having a drawing action on the material which; if no were provided to prevent it, would pull'the carriage toward the knife and in this way destroy the accuracy of the fee 1g action. This advance preventing' ent is indicated. at 25 being pivoted at-26 to-the under side of the carriage 3 having its nose 2'? held toward the ratchet wheel 16 by a spring 28, this nose engaging the ratchet wheel 16 in the direction opposite to the retaining pawl 23 and preventing the advance movement of the toothed member 15. Of course, this ad vence preventing detent must be moved out of cooperation with the toothed member en the advancing pawl is cooperating th said toothed member to advance the latter. In order that this movement of the advance preventing detent out of engage ment with the toothed member 15 may be efi ected, the swinging member 18 has a cam portion formed by a recess 29 and a'curved portion 301 the latter being concentric with the axis of turning of the swinging member 18. On the advance preventing detent, a projecting portion 31 is provided beyond the nose 27 and at one side of the latter and this projecting portion 31 cooperates with the swin ng member 18, entering the notch 29 to engage the toothed me iber 15, and coop ting with the conce: trio portion 30 so as to hold the nose 2'? out of engagement ber .15. hen. the

t ated in Fig. (3, the projection 31 lies in the notch 29 enco es the toothed member 15, and. the advancing pawl 16 is swung und the action of the pro ection 22, the 'ion 31 rides on the concentric portion 3O bringing the nose 27 out of engagement with the toothed member15 as shown in 119 '1 so that said tooth member may be moved under the action of the advancing pawl 16.
With the end in view of determining the amount the carriage 5 is to be moved so as to obtain a slice of the desired thickness, there is provided a controlling member 32 which, in this instance, is mounted to turrz on the hub of the of the pinion 11 above said toothed member 15. The periphery 32 of the controlling member 32 is concentric v ith the axis of turning of the toothed IIIB111- her. but projects beyond the teeth of said member so as to cooperate with the nose ot' the advancing pawl 16 in order to hold said advancing pawl out of engagement with said d member 15. The periphery 32 is not co-exrensive with the toothed member, and only covers the segment of said toothed member, so that it is possible by adjusting this controlling member 32 to determine the time of engagement between the advancing pawl 16 and, the toothed member 15. Vhen the advancing pawl lies in the position shown. in Fig; 6, it engages the periphery 82 of the controlling member and is held out of engagement with the toothed member 15. At this time the nose 27 of the advance preventing detent engages the toothed member to hold the latter against movement. litter the advancing pawl is carried about the ing member 18, the latter through the concentric portion shiftsthe advance preventing detent out of engagement with the toothed member 15 and thereafter the ad- -rcirpawl 16 coo-peratesw'ith the toothed due to the fact that it passes oil the end 32 0f the concentric,- portion 32= of the rolling member, so that the toothed member can be'sliitted by the advancing pawl 16 during the rest of the movement of said pawl under theaction of the projection 22, It is apparent. that. by shifting the po sition of the end of the concentric portion of the controlling member the amount With the end in view of permitting the carriage 5 to be moved away from the cutter, a controlling lever 39 is employed pivoted at 4:0 to the carriage 3 andhaving an end 11 formed to cooperate with projections 12, 43, and l: provided respectively on the advancing pawl16, the advance preventing detent 25 and the retaining pawl Qwaxis of the toothed member by the swing-- controlled by a movable member on which the advancing pawl is mounted and the ad vancing pawl being in turn controlled by a member which determines the amount said pawl will effect the movement of the toothed member, the advancing pawl being held out of engagement with the toothed. member by its controlling member during the time that the advance preventing pawl or detent is in engagement with said toothed member.
