nnronro vIsI'rAoIoN, or BRODKLYN, ivnvr ronic.
'MUIiTIPLE-WRITING INSTRUMENT,
Application filed June 2,-
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that" I,- ANIOETO' Vrsrrncron,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain; new and useful Improvements in MultiplelVriting Instruinents,"of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to multiple writing instruments, and has for its object to pro vide a deviceof thenature ofa combination vide a fountain pen holder having chambers pencil and fountain pendesignedso that inks oft va-rying'colors may be used and which is relatively flat for convenience in handling'andc'arrying in a pocket. 1
Another object of the invention is to proi'orcontaining the ink reservoirs and from which the'reservoi'rs may be withdrawn entirely at'the'w'illof the user. i I A furtherobj ectof the invention resides intheprovision of means for locking themovable pen in, projected or withdrawn position. r These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and arrangement of partshereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which I Figure 1 is a side view of a combination writing instrument constructed in accordance with the invention, showingpne of the pens retracted and the pencil in writing position. Figure 2 is an edge View of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, showing the pencil withdrawn and its corresponding pen nib projected.
Figure 1 is an enlarged transverse sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1. Figure 5 is a side view of one of the pen elements, showing the nib and reservoir thereof. V
Figure 6 is an edge side view of the cap for enclosing the nibs.
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary de- I tail view of the device, illustrating the locking element for the movable reservoir. 1
In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body of the device, which comprises a pair of tubular members 11 and 12, arranged in'pa-rallel and connected by lateral webs 14. As shown in Figure 1, thetubular 1922. Serial No. 5651341.
member 11 is of slightly less length at one' end than the tubular member 12, while at the opposite; end, the length of the tubular member 11' is considerably greater thanthat of the tubular member 12. j
Fitted into the tubular member -11,"is a cylindrical ink reservoir 15,-carrying' the" pen nib 16 at oiieend, and provided, near the nib with a'f shoulder 17, adapted to en'-- gage against the shorter end of the" tubular member 11,-(as shown Figure 1) so as to limit the inward movementof the reservoir, relative to the tubular member.
As illustrated in F igures -1 and 3, the longerend of the tubular member is provider with diametrically opposite longitudinal slotslS and fitted into said longer end is an eraser 19, its inner end being disposedin'space'tlrelationwitlrthe'inner end of the- I slots 18 so that a small instrument may be inserted through the slots to engage the inner end or the erasenenabling tlie'same to be easily removed when it becomes worn or otherwise useless. 1
Slidably within the tubular member 12' is an inkreservoir 20," of somewhat lesser length than the reservoir 15; and itis' provided with a tubnlar projection the outer end of which is tapered as at 22, and supports a pencil lead 23, other leads 2 1 being stored in the. cylindrical portion of the projection.
'As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the pencil end of the reservoir 20 projects beyond the shorter end of the tubular member 12, while the pen nib 21 is disposed at the opposite end of the reservoir 20, in such inanner as to be readily withdrawn into the tubular member 12, when it is desired to use the nib 16.
In order to provide means for readily shifting the reservoir 20 and its accompanying elements, there is provided a button 25, the shank 26 of which is fixed in the reservoir 20 and projects through the slot 27 formed in the tubular member 12, adjacent its longer end.
As shown, the ends of this slot are curved i as at 28 to provide recesses for the reception of the shank 26 for the purpose oflocklng the reservoir 20 in either withdrawn or pro 'jected position. order that the reservoir 20 may be entirely withdrawn from the tubular member 12, a slot 29 connects the slot 27 with the end edge .of'thevtubular memprovided in the cap to accommodate the button stem 26 whenthe cap is placed in the position on the device, as illustrated in Figure 3. I
- The fiat webs or casing sides'let have between them and the adjacent peripheral surfaces of the tubular casings ll and 12, open spaces 33 which may be utilized to contain extra leads,-ink pellets, pen nibs, etc., the same being accessible at the ends which maybe plugged with a removable stopper.
It is to be noted that the peculiar flat shape of the implement is particularly convenient to handle, assuring that the pen nibs will be properly presented to the surface written upon and that a minimum of space is required in the pocket carrying the same. 7
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in its construction, without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the sctipe of the claims hereto appended.
' v aving thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A multiple writing' instrument com prising a pair of tubular members in parallelrelation, webs connecting the tubular members intermediate their ends, and writing elements adapted to be removably containedin the tubular members said webs and tubular members forming article containing pockets. 4 f a 2. A multiple Writing, instrument comprising a pair of tubular members in parallel relation, webs connecting the tubular members intermediate their ends, Writing elementsadapted to be removably contained in thetubular members, ,and means for projecting and withdrawing certain of said Writing elements said webs and tubular members forming article containingpockets.
3. A multiple writing instrument comprising a pair of tubular members in parallel relation, webs connecting the tubular members intermediate their ends, writing elements adapted to be removably contained in the tubular members, means for projecting and withdrawing certain of said writing elements, and means associated with the projecting and withdrawing means for locking its respective writing element III projected-or withdrawn position said Webs and tubular members forming article con-" taming pockets.
In testimony whereof name to this application.
