Description
I. cnAnLE'sr Burial-Gaskats.
1 j UNITED STATES PATENT Onion. 1
IsAAo onAnLEsoF ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASKETS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,381, dated January 13,1874 application filed August 13,1873.
OAsE D.
thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. A A
My invention relates to an improvement in burial cases or caskets; and consists in fur:
nishing the upper edge of the body of the case with an elastic gasket, with a corresponding gasket on the under side of the lid, whereby the joint between the lid and body can be perfectly closed. I
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement in burial case or casket. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of its lid. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the case or casket at line a: of Fig. 1.
A represents the body, which is constructed of wood, the upper edge of which is furnished with a gasket, D, constructed of gum or other elastic material. On the under side of the lid B is secured a similar gasket, 0, so arranged,
it in proper juxtaposition the gasketG will be A directly over the gasket D, whereby the joint between the body and lid will bep'erfectly closed when the latter is screwed down upon the former.
Experience has demonstrated that it is al most impossible to closethe joint between the lid and its body by the use of a single gasket, and the undertaker is never certain that the said joint is perfectly closed; but, by the use of two gaskets, as hereinbefore described, I
have found by a great number of experiments and trials that, in every case where the two gaskets h ave been used, the joint between the lid and the body has been perfectly closed.
The gaskets hereinbefore described must, in all cases, be firmly glued to the wood-that is to say, one gasket is firmly glued to the top edge of the body of the coffin, and the other j gasket firmly glued to the under side of the lid. j
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is A burial-casket, the upper edge of the body A being provided with a gasket, D, and the under side of the lid B furnished with a correspondinggasket, 0, each permanently glued to the wood, substantially as herein described, 1
and for the purpose set forth.
