entree BOILER-SCALE REIVL'OVER.

T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Grmnnns H. florrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Devils Lake, in the county of Ramsey and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements boiler- Scale Removers, of which the follou is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved composition for preventing the depositing of scales or incrustations in boilers, fines, and the like; and for the purpose of loosening scales therein, to permit their ready removal.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an anti-scale composition, useful in preventing the lime and magnesium salts of water from forming hard scales on the interior of steam boilers, and the like.
The improved composition consists of the following ingredients, preferably in the proportionate amounts specified:
Ground cattle horns, 15 pounds.
Sodium carbonate (Na CO 1 pound.
Calcium phosphate (321. (1 Q pound.
Coal tar, 1 gallon.
It is preferred that cattle horns be used in either their fresh, or dry condition, since the same contains certain ingredients which chemically react upon the scale deposits in a boiler. The base material of the horn, is of course keratin, with a small portion of gelatine and a small amount of phosphate of lime added thereto. It is preferred that the bony core of the horn be ground with the horny sheath part. In the preparation of the composition, the horn is prepared in ground or pulverized condition, and thoroughly intermixed and mingled with the sodium carbonate and calcium phosphate. When these three substances or ingredients have been mixed in proper manner, they are stirred or otherwise thoroughly compounded with the coal tar, said coal tar being preferably heated into a plastic formation to properly receive the pulverized or ground materials.
While cow horns are preferred, this formula need not be strictly compounded of cattle horns, since various other substances such as hoofs contain the same necessary ingredients. Likewise, the coal tar can be distilled, and its resulting product mixed Application filed June 4,
1921. Serial No. 475,160.
with the pulverized materials to form the improved scale remover.
While it is preferred that the improved scale remover be put up in plastic condition for commercial use, the same can be sold in cakes or balls, according to the nature of the coal tar used in compounding the ground material. V
The above formula has been found very useful in removal of the various types of scales in boilers, since not all scales in boilers are of the same chemical constituents; the same varying greatly according to the chemical analyses of the water used in the boiler.
The improved boiler composition when disposed within the water of a boiler will prevent the depositing of the lime and magnesium salts in scale formation on the boiler. Likewise, the composition will act upon scales already deposited within the boiler, loosening the same for easy removal when the boiler is scraped.
lfhe precise proportions and ingredients listed above need not be strictly adhered to, since the principal feature of the improved boiler composition is the provision of the horn ingredient as a main constituent. The remover will consequently be of value in that the generation of a certain amount of steam can be accomplished with less consumption of fuel than is the case where scale is deposited interiorly of the boiler. Efficiency is thereby greatly stimulated by the addition of this composition to the feed water in a boiler.
1' claim:
1. An anti-scale compound, consisting of horn, sodium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and coal tar.
2. in antiscale compound, consisting of cattle horns, soda ash, calcium phosphate, and coal tar.
3. A. boiler scale remover, consisting of the following substances in their specified proportions: horn, 15 pounds; sodium carbonate (Na U,), 1 pound; calcium phosphate Ca,(PO,),, 3,- pound; coal tar, 1 gal- 1011.
4. A boiler scale remover, consisting of ground horn, sodium carbonate, and calcium phosphate, all of said ingredients being" thoroughly mixed together in dry form, and compounded with coal tar.
5. A boiler scale remover, consisting of the following ingredients in their specified mixed proportions, cattle h'orn,15 pounds; sodium carbonate (Na cO 1 pound; calcium phosphate Ca (PO pound; coal tar, 1 gallon; said horn, sodium carbonate, and calcium phosphate being mixed in dry pulverized form, and compounded with the coal tar when in a plastic heated condition. i
6. A boiler scale remover, consisting of keratin, sodium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and coal tar.
