ASSAJD M. BAROODY, F DANVILLE, VIRGINIA.
MILK-BOTTLE CLOSURE.
application filed February 25, 1922. Serial No. 539,210.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AssAn M. BAROODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will' enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in closures and particularly to milk bottle closures.
One object of the invention is to provide a disk closure for a milk bottle which is .adapted to bend across a transverse line 50 that a portion of the disk can be bent out to;pi'ovide an opening for pouring the contf en'ts of the bottle, and moving means there- Another object of the invention is to provide a closure disk of this character having a novel and improved finger grip, which is adapted to be grasped to'swing the-hinged part of the disk into open position, and
Other objects and advantages will be ap-- parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. In the drawing: Figure 1 is an enlarged top plan view of the disk with the finger grip lying flatly against the face thereof.
I Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the-line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a modified form of the disk.
' Fi re 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure I.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the same line as that of Figure 5 showlng the movable part of the disk swung upwardly.
Referring particularly to the accompanylng drawing 10 represents the disk closure which is formed from heavy paper, paste board or the like, and which is adapted to be snapped into the mouth of a milk bottle. On the lower face of the disk, and transversely thereof is formed a score or cut 12, which permits one portion, that is one-half or less, of the disk, to be bent into the position shown in Figure 1, so that the liquid may be readily poured from the bottle.
In the movable portion of the disk, designated as 10, near the edge thereof, and parallel to the score line 12, a wire staple 13 has its ends disposed in penetrating relation through the disk and then bent laterally against the lower face of the disk, as shown at 14. A wire loop 15, has the ends of its legs bent into hook form as shown at 16, and with the bills engaged beneath the end portions of the portion of the staple 13,- I
which lies against the upper face of the disk. The remaining portion of the loop extends inwardly in the'direction of the score line 12, and lies flatly against the upper face of the movable portion 10 of the disk. In the application of the loop to the staple, these leg ends 16 will be pressed very tightly in embracing engagement with the staple.
To open the bottle, to permit the contents to be poured therefrom, the 'finger nail is engaged under the bight of the loop so that it may be raised from the disk after which the operator grasps the loop between the forefinger and thumb and swings the loop upwardly on the staple 13. Then by an upward pull on the loop, and with the thumb or finger of the other'hand resting on the other portion of the disk, the ortion 10 of the disk may be swung upwardly to provide an opening through which the contents of the bottle maybe poured. The portion 10 may-then be swung down and snapped into,
the-mouth of the bottle so that the contents will be effectively prevented from escape and dirt or dust excluded from the contents.
In Figures 4, 5 and 6 there is shown a modified form of the disk, particularly with reference to the hinging connection between the two portions. The portions of the disk are indicated by the numerals 17 and 18. The disk iscut transversely from its opposit-e edges on a line parallel with the diameter theredf, as indicated at 19, the-cuts being parallel in the upper and lower faces of the disk but spaced from each other. The
cuts extend inwardly t'owardjthe center of' ledges, whereby when the movable section is again swung downwardly into the plane of the other section, there will be provided a joint which will prevent escape of the liquid or ingress of dust or dirt.
Between the outer ends of the cuts 20, and on the inner face of the disk, there is formed a score 21, so that the diskwill bend along this line. This forms the hinge on which the section 17 is arranged to swing. The section 17 is provided with a finger grip 22 similar to that shown in the first form.
What is claimed is- 1. A bottle closure comprising a disk having its opposite faces formed with cuts extending from opposite edges of the disk parallel t0 the diameter of the disk and ex- I tended at right angles into parallel relation at their inner ends, the cuts of one face of the disk being oifset with respect to the cuts of the other face with resultant interlocking ledges when the material of the disk between the cuts of the opposite faces is broken.
2. A bottle closure comprising a disk havment and in parallel relation respectively,
the disk being scored on one face at right angles to and between the outer ends of the parallel portions of the said cuts, the said ledges being so arranged that the material of the disk of the movable section will snap past the material of the other section when the said movablesection is moved out of the plane of the other section.
3. A bottle closure comprising a disk having transverse cuts on its opposite faces which are offset but parallel to each other, the material between the cuts of the opposite faces being adapted to be broken when one portion of the disk is moved out of the plane of the disk resulting in ribs, one of which is arranged to snap past the other when the said rtion is moved out of the plane of the dis In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
