Application filed. April 22, 1920. Serial No. 375,758.
To all 1072-0721 it may concern Be it known that'l, AUGUsr "SEIEERT, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State ;of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter Cartons, of which the follo ing is a specification.
My present invention relates to an improvement incounter cartons for receiving, shipping, displaying and advertising goods therein. p
One of the objects of my device is toprov'..de a carton or container of the class described, which may be made from a single blanlr,.and by reason of being, so made, will permit a greater economy in the printing of the display surface thereof, inasmuch as it is desirable, in some instames, so to locate the display portion of sad carton as to receive advertisements or pictorial; illustrations upon one side of the device only, although both sides of the display container may be so printed in the more expensive type of containers or cantons.
Another important object of my device is the provision of meanswhereby the carton may be locked in carton form quickly and economically without the use of gluedup joints.
Another'important object of my device is the provision of means in connection with a cover whereby the carton may be tilted when placed upon the counter for more readily exposing the goodsto inspection.
These and other capabilities will be ascertained from a further reading of the following specification.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, shows thecarton in closed posiv tion.
Figure 2, shows the device opened and in tilted "display. position.
Figure 22 isv an end view of the device opened and in tilted display position.
Fig. 3, shows the blank from which the device is formed.
Fig. 4: discloses the same bent up or folded upon the scorings'and cuts.
Fig. .5, shows the device in partially folded assembled position.
Fig. 6,, shows the same in position for parts throughout the severalviews.
operating to extend the restor easel portion of the device for the display position as shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters or numerals denote similar My device is made of cardboard or other suitable material and preferably is blanked vided with a rectangular bottom 13, some-,
what wider than long, having side- extensions 14 and 15, and end- extensions 16 and 17. These side-extensions and end-extensions'are foldably connected tothe bottom '13 along the side and end linesthereoflbut are not connected to each other at the corners of the bottom 13, andare arranged to turn up at right-angles to the bottom '13, by bending or folding along the lines of connection to the bottom 13.
The exterior bottom portion 11 is provided with a bottom 18, of substantially the same shape and size as the bottom 13, having a side-extension 19, and end- extensions 20 and 21. The side-extension 19, which inshapc and size is substantially the same as the side- extensions 14 and 15 crew bottom 18, is foldably connected to the sideextension 14 and is foldably connected to the bottom 18, along the longitudinal lines of'the bottom 18 and the side-extension 1 L, and is-arranged to turn up at right angles to the bottom 18 bybending or folding along the line of connection to the bottom 18.
The end- extensions 20 and 21 are foldably connected to the bottom 18 along the end lines of the bottom 18, and are substantially of the same size and-shape as the end- extensions 16 and 17 of the bottom 13, and are arranged to turn up at right. angles to the bottom 18, by bending or folding :along the line of connection to the bottom.
The end- extensions 20 and 21 are provided with freely-hanging end pieces 22 and e3,
in" L] connected thereto and foldable at right angles to the end- extensions 20 and 21, the purpose of the freely-hanging end pieces being hereinafter stated.
The end-extensions 20 and 21' are provided, at the ends opposite to the freelyhanging end pieces 22 and 23, with cooperating lock-tabs or latches 24, 24 which are shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the lock-tabs or latches 24 and 24 being toldably connected at one end to the end- extensions 20 and 21, and having at the other ends interlocking recesses or notches 25 25. In width. the lock-tabs orlatches 24 are the sameas the height or width'of the end- extensions 20 and 21, and the lock-tabs or latches are ar ranged to be turned at right angles to the end-extensions 20and 21 by bending or folding alongthe lines of connection to 20 and 21.
The cover 12 comprises the covering portion 26 which is connected to the easel brace 27 by the outer side and easel back portion 28, thecovering portion 26 having the flap 29.
The easel brace 27 normally forms part of the exterior bottom 18, and is four sided, having an upper longitudinal line 30 and a lower longitudinal line 31 which is shorter than the upper line, the lines 30 and 31 being connected by side lines 32 and converging to the lower line 31, the easel brace at the lower line 31 being foldably connected to the bottom 18, and its side lines and 33 being "free or detached from the bottom 18.
The outer side and easel back portion28 is substantially the same shape and size as the side-extension 15 of the bottom 13. The outer side and easel back portion 28 is toldably connected along its lower longitudinal line to the easel brace 27 and is foldably connected along its upper longitudinal line to the covering portion 26. The outer side and easel back portion 28 is provided with a triangular or' other suitably formed detent or tilt-lock 34 foldably connected. on
one of its sides to the outer side and easel back portion 28 and free or detached therefrom on its other sides, the purpose of the detent or tilt-lock being hereinafter meutioned.
The covering portion 26 corresponds sub stantially in shape and size to the shape and size of the botom 13 of the interior bottom portion 10 and is foldable as along the line 35 for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
The flap 29 is foldablv connected along its lower or inner longitudinal line to the covering portion 26, and in length is substantially the same as the length of the bottom 13 of the interior bottom portion 10, and in height or width is substantially the same as the side extension 15. The outer ends of the flap 29 may be trimmed or rounded as atc36, for convenience 111 operating the flap.
To arrange the parts in relation for forming the carton or box, again referring to Fig. 4, the interior bottom portion 10 is turned upwardly on the foldable lines between the side-extensions l4 and 19 and is received in the exterior bottom portion 11, as shown in Fig. 5, with the freely-hanging end pieces 22 and 23 folded or bent at right angles to the end extensions 20 and 21 and engaging the side-extensions 1'4 and 19 between the latter extensions. The carton or box is thus provided with a double bottom 01 which the exterior bottom portion 11 forms the outer bottom. The side- extensions 14 and 19 being adjacent to each other, thus form double sides for the carton or box, the side-extension 19 forming the outer one of these double sides. The inner side-extension 15 being adjacent to the outer side and easel back portion 28 of the cover 12, thus forms double sides for the carbon or box opposite to the first mentioned double sides, the intermediate portion 28 being the outer of these sides. The end- extensions 16 and 20 and 17 and 21 being adjacent to each other thus form opposite double ends for the carton or box, the end- extensions 20 and 21 forming the outer of these ends. The freely-hanging end- pieces 22 and 23,
.being in engagement with and between the side- extensions 14 and 19 press outwardly against the side-extension l9, and thus provide pressure or tension members for holding the interior bottom, portion 10 in place in the exterior bottom portion 11.
The recesses or notches 25, 25' of the lock tabs or latches 24 24 are brought into interlocking engagement with each other on the outer side of the rear of the container and thus lock the parts together, the recessed or notched ends of the lock-tabs or latches pref-' erably being engaged on the under sides of the lock-tabs or latches, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, to protect the recessed or notched ends from injury. The flap 29 is then tucked into the box or carton by folding down the cover 12 and bending the flap 29 until the flap is in engagement with the adjacent face of the side-extension 14, the pressure due to the flexibility of the cover holding the cover in place.
To provide an easel back or rest for the carton or box for purposes of display, the easel brace 27 and the outer side and easel back portion 28 are drawn outwardly and in locking engagement, :the .detent or tiltlock 34 thus preventing collapsing or return of the easel brace 27 and outer side and easel back 28 to normal operative position in the carton .orobox. The flap .29 of the cover is then bent along the line of its .attachment to the cover 26 sufiiciently to cause the cover .to standat such angle as anay be desired to display effectively printed :or other matter arranged on thevcover and flap.
It will be noted thatthe end- pieces 22 and 23 and the locking-tabs or latches 24, :when the carton or box is in assembled form, aid in strengthening the sides or longer portions of the carton or box in addition to performing the tension and locking functions 'hereinbefore stated.
In practice the outer and inner bottoms and outer and inner sides and ends may be of the same respective dimensions, and the inner members be readily received in op crative relation within the confines of the outer members when in operative relation, due to the give or flexibility of the material of which the carton or box preferably is made.
Referring to Fig. 3, which shows the blank by which my carton or box is formed, the dotted lines denote scored lines upon the cardboard or material of which the blank consists, and the full lines within the confines of Fig. 3 denote the cut lines to form members which tend to retain or look the carton or box in assembled form.
The blank from which the carton or box is formed by folding the blank on the scorings and cuts thereof, comprises the ma n portion A rectangular in shape, in length about three times its width, and havingend extensions 13 and C and side extensions D and E.
The main portion A comprises the inner bottom section 13, the inner side section 14, the exterior bottom section '18 having the easel brace section 27 the outer side section 19, the outer side and easel back section 28 having the tilt 'lock section 34, and the covering section 26.
The end extension B comprises the cover flap section 29, and the end extension C comprises the inner side section '15.
i The side extension D comprises the inner end section 16, the outer end section 20',
The Louterside section 19 is defined from the, inner side section 14 by the transverse The free hanging end- piece sections 22 and 23 are separated from the inner and outer side sections 14 and 19 by the longitudinal cutsand 46 and from the inner end sec tions 16 and 17 by the transverse cuts 47 and 48. The easel brace section 27 is defined from the exterior bottom section 18 by the transverse. scoring 31 and is separated therefrom on two of its sides by the cutsc32- and 33 diverging from the scoring 31. The locking tabseotions 24 and 24 are defined from the outer end sections 20 and 21 by extensions of the scoring 30, and arerseparated from the outer side and easel back section 28 and the covering sect-ion 26 .by the longitudinal cuts 52 and 53. The outer side and easel position. "The covering section is defined from the cover flap section 29 by the transverse scoring '58, and is separated from the locking tab sections 24 and 24 by said cuts 52 and 53.
The carton blank is made from asingle sheet or piece of material of rectangular form and is made with a minimum wastage of materi'aL the wastage onlyarising at the upper ends of the blank, and therefore making for greater economy in the manufacture of cartons or boxes of the described To form the blank into a carton, the procedure is as follows: The blank lying in front of the operator extended as 'in Fig. 3, the inner side section 15 is folded down- Wardly along the scoring 37 and the inner endforming sections 16 and 17 are folded downwardly along the scorings 38 and 39, this being permitted by the cuts 47 and 48. The outer and inner side forming sections '14 and 19 are folded downwardly along the scoring 36. The outer end forming sect-ions back section '28 is defined from the covering v 20 and 21 are folded upwardly along the scorings 42 and 48; the end- piece sections 22 and 23 are folded upwardly along the scoring 40 and turned inwardly towards each other, the cuts 4-5, d6 L7 and 48 permitting this. The outer and inner side forming sections 14 and 19 are folded upwardly along the scoring 40 and carried over the inwardly turned end-pieces the inner bottom 13 thus being received in the outer bottom 18; The outer side and easel back section 28 is folded upwardly along the scoring 30, the formation of the rectangular receptacle or body of the carton thus: being completed. The locking tab extensions 2% and 24: are folded upwardly along the scoring 30 and turned inwardly towards each other, the cuts 52 and 53 permitting this, and are interlocked by means of the locking ends 25 and 25, thus retaining the carton in assembled form. The cover section 26 is folded upwardly along the scoring 54 and the flap 29 is folded downwardly on the scoring 58 and tucked into the receptacle portion of the carton.
