S. PENKSA TOY Filed Aug. 23, 1920 Inveh'on' Patented duly 17, 19230 l thl it l l t l al l l TOY.
Application filed August 23, 1920.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, STANLEY PENKSA, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1 Long Island City, in the county oit' Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Toys of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy and has for its object to provide a simple, very iii-- expensive mechanically movable toy Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanically propelled toy operated by means of a twisted rubber band.
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the toy Figure 2 a side elevational view thereof Figure 3 is a similar view ot a modilica-- tion, and
Figure l a similar view of another modification.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a mechanically propelled toy which consists of a roller 2 in the form of a spool having its ends 3 and i enlarged in diameter andprovided with annular peripheral notches 5 forming traction means for the flanges or wheels 3 and a. A bore 6 (shown dotted) extends through the spool through which a rubber band 7 is projected through said bore and has one end S looped over the pin 9 and the other end looped over the notched end 11 of the lever 12 having an offset inner side which bears against the face 13 of the wheel 4, thus holding the main part of said lever from. against said face to reduce frictional contact between said 1ne1nbers. A. groove let may be provided in the outer face of wheel 3 in which the member 9 may seat. By rotating the lever 12 the band 7 is twisted into a wound spring so that upon seating the device upon a floor, table or other plane surface and releasing: the same it will travel a considerable dis tance.
in Figure 3 I show a slight modification in which the wheel 15 is of slightly greater diameter than the wheel 16, the purpose of which is to cause the device to travel in a circle so as to travel continuously until run Serial No. 405,373.
down. Also mounted on the outer end of the winding lever '17 is a figure 18 of very light material.
In Figure l ends beyond the periphery of the wheels 20 and 21, thus causing the deviceto travel in a circle and at the sine time make a rapping noise.
The device may be suitably colored and shaped to appear most attractive.
Having described my invention, that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent v 1. A device of the character described consisting of a spool having vertically extending wheel forming flanges upon the spool, a resilient hand extending through the bore and manually operable means for winding said hand, one of said wheels being of greater diameter than the other, said means consisting of a lever over which one end of said band is looped.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a spool havingvertically extending' wheel forming flanges upon the spool, a resilient hand extending through the bore and manually operable means for winding said hand, one of said wheels being of greater diameter than the other, said means consisting of lever with an offset on, the inner side over which one end of said band is looped, said lever projecting beyond said flanges and forming a trailer for said spool.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a spool having vertically extending wheel forming flanges upon the spool, a resilient band extending through the bore and manually operable means for winding said band, one of said wheels being of greater diameter than the other. said means consisting of a lever with an oifset on the inner side over which one end of said band is looped, said'lever projecting beyond said flanges and forming a trailer for said spool, and a figure carried by said trailer.
l. A mechanical toy consistin of a spool with a pair of wheels and a rubber propelling device therefor, said device consisting of a rubber band, extending through a bore in the spool and looped over a retaining member at each end. one of said members consisting of a winding lever, said wheels having notched peripheries, means for causthe pin 19 extends at both i i ing said toy to travel in a circle, said means increasing the diameter of one wheel, and making a knocker.
5. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one of said pins.
6. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band, extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one of said pins, the other pin forming a winding crank for said band.
7. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one oi said pins, the other pin forming a winding crank for said band, a figure carried by said pin.
8. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one of said pins, the other pin forming a winding crank for said band, a figure carried by said pin, one of. the Wheels being of greater diameter than the other.
9. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one of said pins, the other pin rormlng a winding crank for sald band,
a figure carried by said pin, one of the wheels being of greater diameter than the other, one of the pins projecting at both ends beyond the periphery of its wheel.
10. A toy consisting of a spool liaYing a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the band are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one 01" said pins, the other pin forming a winding crank for said band, a figure carried by said pin, one of the wheels being of a greater diameter than the other, one of the pins projecting at both ends beyond the periphery of its wheel, the other pin projecting beyond the periphery of its wheel at one end.
11. A toy consisting of a spool having a pair of wheels and means contained within the spool whereby it is propelled, said means consisting of a resilient band extending through a bore in the spool, pins seated against the wheels to which the ends of the hand are attached, a groove in one of said wheels to receive one oi said pins, the other pin forming a. winding crank for said band, a figure carried by said pin, one of the wheels being of a greater diameter than the other, one of the pins projecting at both ends beyond the periphery of its wheel, the other pin projecting beyond the periphery of its wheel at one end, said wheels having selfpropelling traction treads.
12. A toy comprising a drum, a spring having one end secured in the drum, means for winding said spring, said means adapted to engage the ground when the toy is deposited thereon, and wheels having ground gripping elements around their circumference and being secured on the drum, said means including a hub with a handle revolubly mounted on the end of the drum.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
STANLEY PENKSA.
