SCHNEIDER & 0111., or r' ANcn PATENT OFFICE.
JEAN JULES MARIE ANTOINE EUGENE SCHNEIDER, or PARIS, FRANCE, Ass GNoR 'ro PARIS, F ANCE, A LIMITED JOINT STOCK COMPANY OF- ARMING or AERorLANEs.
Application filed August 14, 1922. Serial No. 581,835."
T'oaZl whom it'mag concern:
1 Be it known that I, JEAN JULES MARIE AN'roINR EUGIINE SCHNEIDER, a citizenof theRepublic of France, residing at Paris,
France, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Armingof Aeroplanes,
which invention is ful'lyset forth in the following specification.
The present invention relates to the inventionv for which an application was filed by meon Aug. 14, 1922 and numbered 581,834, and it relates more particularly to an improvement in the apparatus for arming aeroplanes, as described with reference to Figs 14, and 16 of my said earlier application, wherein the gun barrel is mounted in a stationary turret constituting, a supporting framework for the cradle in which the gun barrel is swivelled for training the gun along an axis at right angles to the axis of the gun'barrel, and in a frame which in its turn carries elevating trunnions for which bearings are provided in the lateral frameplates of the said framework fixed to the said stationary turret.
' The improved apparatus of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying A drawings wherein Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a longitudinal elevation, a plan and a section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1 of a preferred constructural example of the said improved apparatus.
For the sake of greater simplicity, it is assumed in Figs. 2 and?) that the gun barrel and its cradle have been brought into a hori zontal position which they cannot occupy in practice.
In these figures, C is a turret upon which is formed a rolling track 0 for rollers n, the
pins n of which are mounted in the transverse sides of the carriage I. In this frame there is mounted so as tobe capable of pivoting by means of horizontal trunnions F, a frame P in which the gun cradle F can swivel by means of trunnions p arranged along an axis at right angles to the axis of y the gun barrel.
The elevation of the gun is effected in this improved apparatus by a rocking motion of the frame P around the axis of the trunnions P. For this purpose the frame P carries toothed sectors P meshing each with a pinion P These two pinions are fixed on a shaft p journalled in the carriage I and can be driven by means of caring P, P actuated by means of a ban -whee1 P.
Large angular movements of the gunbarthe carriage I along the rolling track a, for
instance by means of gearmg comp'rising','on
the carriage I, a helical wheel sector I, meshlng with a worm I journalled in a fixed bearing I and actuated by means of a hand wheel I.
As shown in the drawings, the transverse sides of the carriage I. which carry the pins n arranged along radii of the rolling tracks 0, are formed with rims or flanges by means of which they engage with the under-sides of the said tracks.
The holding and guiding of the gun during its angular movements along the tracks a may further be assured, for instance, by means of a roller 1" mounted on an arm 71 projecting from one of the longitudinal sides of the frame I; the said roller being engaged in an arc-shaped slot-guide 0 rigidly fixed to the turret or to the rolling tracks 0.
The angular training movements of small amplitude of the gun barrel which has been previously moved along the circular tracks 0, are produced by swivelling the gun cradle around the axis of the trunnions P. The gun cradle F is provided with a worm wheel sector f meshing with a worm f journalled in bearings carried by the toothed sectors F The shaft of the Worm f carries a bevelled pinion f meshing with a pinion 7, the bearing of which is carried by one of the sectors p and which is actuated by means of a flexible shaft 7 by means of a hand wheel 7.
Having now particularly described and a certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to performed I declare that what I claim is 1. Means for arming aircraft comprising a turret, a rolling carriage mounted on said turret, a frame horizontally trunnioned on said carriage, a cradle vertically trunnioned on said frame, and a gun carried by said cradle.
2. Means for arming aircraft comprising a stationary turret provided with a track, a rolling carriage mounted on said track, a frame horizontally trunnioned on said carriage, a cradle vertically trunnioned on said frame, and a gun carried by said cradle.
3. Meansfor amning aircraft comprising a statioiiary turret having substantially tr'ack;fa" frame Horizontally tru'nnioned 0n said carriage, a cradle vertically trunnione'd on said frame, and a gun carried by said cradle.
4. In a gun mount for air raft a station ary turret, a rolling carriage mounted thereon, a frame'horizontally trunnioned on said carriage, a guucrad'le vertically trunnioned on said frame, means for rolling said can riage, means for'elevating said frame, and means for trainingsaid cradle.
5, In a. gun mount for aircrafga stationary turret provided; with a; track substaniallyj c nc ntri v e t a, Carriage P videdwith rollersinengagement with mid track, a frame horizontally trunnioned on said carriage, agun cradlevertically-- trunnioned'loii said frame, and'mean's for-Holding said carriage in position during its rolling movement on said track, 6; ln a gun 'ount" for aircraft; a'statioriary turret having a track concentric therewith, a. gun carriage having rollers-idengagement with said track, means for rolling said carriage on said track, and means for holding and guiding said carriage during its rollin movement, saidmeans comprisinga slotte guide on one of said-first-narned elements and anarmon the othenof said firstnamed elements having rollers engaged insaid slotted guide.
Dated this 6th day ofJu1y, 1922.
In testimony whereof I have signed thisspecification.
