NETE STATS JOHN n. VEAZEY, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
CAR REPLACER.
Application mea December 5, 1922. seriai No. 605,073.
new and useful Improvements in Car Re` placers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to means where` by a derailed vcar may be automatic-ally replaced upon the rails by propelling the same along the track for a short distance, the wheels engaging the replacer and being elevated and at the same time moved laterally in the readjusting of the car to the track.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
Vhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a car replacer embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof, n
Figure 3 is a rear view,
Figure l a vertical transverse section on the line 14e-l of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a sectional detail of a modified form. v
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device comprises a clamp member which is adapted to fit astraddle of a rail 1 and for this purpose the member is formed in its underside with a longitudinal groove or channel 2. The portion extending over the rail 1 is tapered at opposite ends to admit of the car wheels passing readily thereover without any j ar or jolt. A' clamp screw 3. threaded into an opening formed in a portion of the member at one side of the groove or channel 2, is adapted to engage the web of the rail 1 and secure the device in the required adjusted position. Deflecting wheels 5 are mounted upon the top side of a portion of the clamp member so as to occupy a position at one side of the rail 1. vThe delecting wheels 5 are mounted upon vertical axes and in the rerailing of a car, the wheel of the latter striking the deflecting wheels 5 is arrested` in its lateral movement and properly positioned to engage the rail. The portion ofthe clamp member-atone side of the rail 1 and receiving the deflecting wheels 5 is formed in its top side with a groove or chang nel 6 to receive the flange of the car wheel which is caused to enter said groove by the action of the deflecting wheels 5. The portion of the clamp member at the opposite side of the rail 1 includes a wing 7 and an ear 3, the latter being of circular form to admit of the replacing member being pivoted thereto.
The replacing -member is hollow upon its under side and is adapted' to be pivotally connected at oney end to the ear 8 of the clamp member and for this purpose the replacing member is recessed to receive the circular ear 8 to which it is pivoted by means of a bolt 9 or analogous fastening. The replacing member is provided along the lower edge of its outer side with teeth or spurs 10 whereby to prevent lateral displacement thereof when the device is in operation. The top side of the replacing member comprises an inclined portion 11 and an elevated portion 12, a shoulder 13 being formed between the parts 11 and 12. The lower edge of the inclined portion 11 is about in the plane of the roadbed and the upper portion is about in the plane of the top of the clamp member and the shoulder.
13 inclines longitudinally with its upper end adjacent the rail and as a result a car wheel riding upwardly upon the inclined portion 11 is at the same time moved laterally towards the rail 1 by the action of the inclined shoulder 13 thereon, said shoulder engaging the peripheral portion of the wheel and urging the same laterally towards the rail as the wheel mounts the inclined portion 11. When the car wheel reaches the top of the clamp member, it passes thereover and the flange of the wheel drops into the groove or channel 6l with the result that the wheel is positioned in the continued advance of the car to become properly seated upon the rail 1.
In the modification shown in Figure 5, the clamp member is plain upon its upper side that is, it is devoid of the groove or channel 6. It should be stated that the replacing member or Wing will in practice be provided in rights and lette, whereby to adapt the advantageous position as may be preferred.
A tongue lll is provided at the forward end of the Wing 7 adjacent the replacing member to assist materially in the moving of the oar Wheel laterally When replacing the same upon the track. 1
What is claimed is:
A car replacer'comprising a clamp member grooved in its under side to receive a railand havng a portion at one side formed in itsA top with a longitudinal groove -to receive the iiange of a car Wheel, deiecting wheels'mounted upon the member at one side of the grooves thereof to cause the liange of a carwheel to enter said grooves, lthe opposite vside portion of the kclamp member in' cluding a Wing and a circular ear, and a replacing member having a depression at one end to receive said' circular ear to Which it is pivotally connectechsaid replacing member con'iprisine an inclined portion and an ,elevated portioruthe two portions being separated by means of a shoulder which is lon gitudinally inclined to effect .a lateral movement ot a car wheel as the same mounts the inclined portion'. 1
In testimony whereof Iaiix my signature m presence of two Witnesses.4 i. JOI-IN A. VEAZEY.
