Description

Patented July l0, 19923.
EMANUEL WILLIAM NEDVED, F MILLBORO, SOUTH DAKOTA.
i oALr Wannen.
Application filed March 5, 1920. Serial No. 363,426.
To all w hom it may concer-'1t Be it known that I, EMANUEL WILLIAM NnDvnD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millboro, in the county of Tripp and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf Weaners; yand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enl0 able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple inexpensive and efficient calf weaner, applicable without inconvenience to the animal and of such a construction as to permit of eating or grazing without interference and yet designed to eflectualljf serve its purpose and to come into operative position when the calf raises the head, and with these objects in view the invention consists of a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing wherein:
Figure l is a side view of the device in the applied position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same. The apparatus consists essentially of a shield or nose piecey 10 of generally cross sectionally semi-cylindrical form having the rearwardly extending ears l1 disposed ina substantially upright position at opposite sides of a curved space 12 for theexposure of the upper portion of the head or face and the eyes of the wearer, the shield being tapered toward its front end and provided at the extremity with radially projecting spurs 13 which in the construction illustrated are carried by a fastening plate 14' which is attached by rivets 15 or the equivalent thereof to the material of the shield, preferably of sheet metal or the equivalent thereof.
The means for attaching the device to the head of the animal consists of the throat latch 17 which is preferably adjustable as by means of a buckle 18, a nose strap 19 and 45 a head strap 20, the latter also being adjustable by means of a buckle 2l, said throat latch and nose strap being preferably formed of a single piece and the throat latch, nose piece and head strap being pivotally co-n- 'nected to the rearwardly extending ears of the shield at the point 22 by means, in the construction illustrated, of rivets to the end that the shield may be pivo-tally moved with reference to the fastening straps forming the halter to permit of the free movementof the head of the animal when depressed for the purpose of feeding, drinking or grazing, but adapted to drop down upon the nose when the head is raised, to prevent effective approach to the cow.
What is claimed is A calf weaner comprising an elongated longitudinally tapering transversely curved sheet metal shield, a portion of the rearward edge of said shield being out away to vexpose the upper part of the face of the wearer, relatively wide rearwardly extending side plates formed by said cutaway portions, a longitudinally curved angle member secured to the forward end of said shield, upstanding spurs carried by said member, attaching means pivotally connected to the side plates adjacent their rear ends, and said j side plates serving to prevent lateral displacement of the shield.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL WILLIAM NEDVED. Witnesses:
