i EMILE RIMAILI-IO, F PARIS, FRANCE.
v Application filed February v$3, 1922. Serial-No. 533,948.
To all whom t may/concern.'
Be it known that I, EMILE RIMAILHO, a
citizen of the Republic of France, and residing at Paris, No. 12 Rue de la Rochefoucauld, in the Republic of France, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improved Regulating Devices for the Flow of Liquid in Artillery Brakes, ot which the This invention .relates to a device em- `for the dischargeof the Aliquid which is submittedto the action of springs, the said stroke of .the valve and the tension of the device controlling the` regulation of .the
springs and being lapplicable for use incases A,where the main. body of the brake is sub- ,ject torecoil with the'cannon, whilst the 2oy piston ,rod is niaintai'nedin the liXed position. 'v
. rllhe said arrangemenuwherein the main body o'fthe brake participates inthe recoil Tactiom, possesses certainadvantages as concerns ballistic operations, and is frequently employedin practice. 4According to this invention, the regulation is obtained in prod. portion tothe angleigiven to the piece by means of aninclined plane` submitted to the action of' a- ,cylindrical cam having ar suitable leross-section,.whereupon a control arm provided with a roller is caused to slide during thefrecoil according to a generatrix, theA said cam being revoluble by means of a suitable device which enters into action when the piece is aimed in elevation. In these conditions, the said inclined plane will occupy for each aiming angle a determined position which it preserves throughout the entire period of the recoil and which 4depends solely upon the orientation of the cam. The said cam is preferably set in rotation starting from a given aiming angle, and the position thereof will be subsequently modified for all greater inclination which is given to the piece.
The following description, together with the accompanying drawing which is given by way of example, sets 'forth an embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figs. 1 and l*L are side elevations of the piece.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line A--A, Fig. 1.
'0'. 3 is a partial vertical F1 une is-B, Fig. 1.
section on the Fig. 4 is ahorizontal section on the line C-C, Fig. 3.
1 indicates the piece, which is adapted to slide in the slides 2 mounted on a cradle in steel plate 3 which is secured to a crosspiece 4 carrying the trunnions 5. The said trunnions are pivoted to the cheeks 6 constituting the carriage proper. A brake body 7 is secured to the piece 1 for instance by a hoop 8, and the piston rod vof the brake 9 is secured to the front part of the cradle 3. Tothe main body of the brake is secured a receptacle 10, containing-.in a known manner the valve employed for theldischarge of the liquid whichis subject tothe `tension of a weak spring, and also the stopl piece of the said valve which is separated from the said yregulating inclined plane by a stronger elastic device. An arm 11 secured tothe regulating inclined plane ends in a roller 12 which during the recoil movement is caused to roll upon a cam 13 of cylindrical form .whose cross-section in` the form of a spiral is shown in Fig. 3. The said cam is mounted upon two trunnions 14 and 15 which are maintained-in the bearings 16 and 17 secured to the cradle 3.
To the trunnion 14 isfsecured thcbevel gear18 co-operating with the gearwheel 19 mounted on the transverse shaft 20 which is revoluble inthe wall/of the cradle On the shaft20 is also mounted a spurgear 21 v.co-operating with-a toothed quadrant22y secured to the cheek 6. To prevent any flexion ofthe cam 13 it is maintained by the guide 23 secured to the main body of the brake 7. In order to provide for the rotation and the sliding movement of the said cam, according to the conditions depending upon the spiral form of the latter, the said cam is mounted in an external ring 24 which is revoluble in the guide 23. In these conditions, the said device is operated as follows: At the same time as the piece is aimed in elevation, the quadrant 22 controls the position of the cam 13 by means of the gear wheels 21, 19 and 18. By reason of the spiral form of the said cam, the roller 12 will be more or less raised according to the angle. and in consequence the inclined plane will come into action to a greater or less degree within the casing 10 in order to gradually counteract the lifting of the valve by the opposition ofthe resistance due to the powerful elastic device. It is preferable that the quadrant 22 should come into action only after a given value of the aiming angle is reached. To this effect, the said quadrant comprises a smooth portion having a radius of greater value than that of the bottom of the teeth. In these conditions, during the entire passage of the smooth part of the said quadrant be'liore the pinion 21, the latter Will be immobilized and the device cannot be put out oit order.
It is obvious that by suppressing the guide 23, the cam 13 may be given any suitable profile in order to obtain a constant reaction during the entire period o'l' the recoil in a very exact manner. However, the arrangement as hereinbefore set forth Will a1"- ford satisfactory results in practical operations.
