This leads me to say'that it is of course understood that the usual pivotally mounted cutting and mixing machine is arranged over the top of the machine shown in the drawings to permit the uncooked doughnuts to be dropped into the hot grease. The means for arranging the cover in the aforesaid manner comprises in its preferred form, a rock-shaft 17, a bar 18 which is connected to one end of the cover, a crank arm 19 to be connected tov the rock-shaft and bar and means for rotating the rock-shaft and maintaining it against movement. It is to be stated that the bar 18 is properly shaped to extend over the side rails of the supporting frame and positionedto cross the basket which is disposed below the rock shaft and side rails. Referring now to the means for imparting rotation to the rock-shaft 1'7 and holding it in a set position, it will be seen that this means comprises a handle 20 which is pivoted intermediate its ends on the rock shaft and has a small rod 21 pivotally connected to one end, this rod having its free end connected to a guide 22 on one of the legs of the supporting structure and there being a coiled spring 23 surrounding the rod between the stop 24: on the latter and With this arrangement, it will be seen that by grasping the handle 20 and moving it upwardly to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 1, the rod 21 will have'passed beyond dead center and will lock the parts in a position to which they have been moved and will maintain them in such position until returned to operative positionby hand.

Assuming that the basket is in operative position and that the cover is in the inoperative dotted line position indicated in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the uncooked doughnuts will be dropped from the cutting machine into the hot grease and after a suflicient number havebeen dropped, the handle 20 will be grasped and the cover 15 swung down into the grease and over the open side of the basket and confine the doughnuts therein while cooking. After the latter have been cooked to the desired degree, the handle 20 is againgrasped and" moved upwardly. As before indicated, this will cause the cover to move upwardly and be locked in a position where it will not interfere with the upward movement of the basket. To move the basket upwardly, it is only necessary to grasp the handle 15.and lift it to impart rotation to the rock-shaft 11. In so doing, the'parts 12 much as they are connected with the basket, the latter is swung upwardly to a substantially vertical position'and at the same time is positioned over the receiving tray intowhich the cooked doughnuts are deposited.

and 14 are lifted and inas-' By carefully considering the description in connection with the drawings, persons familiar with devices of this class will doubtless be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention. Therefore, a more lengthy and detailed description is deemed unnecessary.

Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement herein shown and described, this is taken as the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, I wish it to be understood that minor changes coming within the scope of the subjoined claims may be resorted to if desired.

I claim: p I

1. A device of the class described comprising a support, a grease pan, an open-work basket for holding the articles to be cooked, said basket being arranged in said pan, hoisting means connected with one end of the basket for raising it to dumping position, a cover for the basket, and means for raising said cover to and holding it in a vertical position to permit the basket to be raised.
