J. W. WHITESIDE LUGGAGE CARRIER Filed Feb. 13, 1922 r l lkli awwento'a New Yorkcity,
Patented July 10, 1923.
JOHN ,w. wnrrnsrnn, or new YORK, n. Y.
LUGGAGE cannrna.
I Application filed'I ebruary 13,
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN W. Wnrrnsinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inLuggage Carriers, fully described'and represented in proshown in the accompanying drawings which will hereinafter be fully described and specifically pointed out, in the accompanying claims.
In the drawings,
Fig. l is aside elevation of the device shown in operative '(dotted lines indicating inoperative) position on a taxicab Fig. 2 is a plan t Fig. l with parts broken'away; and
' Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring to said drawings, and particw larly to Fig. l, A represents so much of a taxicab as is necessary to illustrate the invention, with a single seatB on one side for the driver, to the ceiling and floor of the operating section of which taxicab are secured in any suitable manner a ceiling plate a and a floor plate 6, which will preferably be positioned at the rearof the luggage carrying space and will be adjacent the" seat of the driver approximately half the dis-' tance between the seat of the driver and the opposite side of the car and close to the partition back of said seat, in which plateswill. be stepped the endsof a supporting column 0. This supporting column will preferably be a hollow cylinder or tube as shown broken away, Fig. 1, for. lightness and strength, provided with holes or slots (Z to admit of vertical adjustment thereon of a bracket 6, adapted to slide on said supporting column 0, which bracket will be provided with holes to register with holes 03 in said county of New York, and
used on automobiles andfor different size pieces able manner,
viewon the line 22 of 1922. Serial No. 536,151.
column to provide forditfer ent size pieces of luggage. By any suitable means, as 'thepin" g passing through bracket and c0lum'n,.said" held in any desired position on the length of said column. to accord with.
bracket will be the size of luggage carried. i'One end fsaid bracket will be provided with asmaller bo re that it may'receive and the. side o'f'said; bracket having such smaller bore Willpref- '1 than the other, in forder arms ot' difierentsize,
erably be provided with a screw thread to receive a screw it which will be used-to lock bracket arm 2' in any desired-position whether in orout of use through turningsofhandle k (or bya wrench),
as shown 1 broken parts, Fig. 2, which-screw will preferably be of the quick action type; The form of yokei shown, and which I prefer to use, willconsist of two arms 2', j,
bent to form substantially right angles,;-0ne;of whicharmsrwillr be adjustable asher'einatterdescribed The stationary arm 7' will'pr'efer'ably be so posi noticomein contact with the seat of the driver and, for eheapness'and I lightness will preferablyconsist ofa hollow I cylinder bent to form substantially arightfl angle, with its outer end closed. in 'any suit its inner open end being sej cured against. movementin one; end of bracket e ',-while arm z'fiwilllalso b'e a'hollow tioned that it will cylinder or tube and will havethe portion which enters bracket e,so reduced in size that it will, vwhendesire'd,enter-and tele scope into the end of tube jsecured in bracket afor the purpose crammin -ea j ustment of said arm 2' to different distances to take different size pieces of luggage. This arm 2' also will have both its portions longer than those of arm 7'. The large end or pork tion of bent arm 2' will-also be of hollow tube form thus adapting it to receive an exten: sion rod it will be capable of horizontal adjustment I and-provide forcarrying a gripper finger V or stop a to engage the luggage, which rod finger will b'e'capable of being locked in the position desired by a look, a cam roll 0, asv
and gripper preferably in the form of shown, supported in a split ring ring will g, which be provided with one or more m whichwill be so constructed that lot screws and nuts for so tightening said cam roll that it will secured to arm 2' in any will be permitted, through a slot in arm 2', to
contact on rod m, through downwardmoverod m will prefermerit of handlep. This not jar loose in transit, and I suitablemanner and Y g I I for large luggage ably be provided with an enlarged end, or
collar 9, which, in conjunction with the perforated collar r or arm 2', will prevent acci dental removal of said rod m. This gripper finger will preferably be L-shaped in order to provid greater adjustability and will be rotatable with said rod m and thus adapted to different size pieces, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 respectively, and will also preferably be provided with a bent end, as also shown in said figures, to avoid its injuring articles it will hold.
The operation of the Assuming the bracket inoperative position, as shown in dotter lines in Fig. 1, cam lock 0 will first be loosened through raising handle p, in order that gripper finger n and its rod on may be moved freely to any position; lock screw it will then be loosened and bracket 0 and arm 2' and the parts carriedv by them raised to a height about equal to that of the center of the piece of baggage and said bracket and arm then secured in such position by the insertion of pin 9 through slots in said bracket and slots d in supporting column 0 registering therewith and then tightening the screw h. The gripper finger n with the rod m by which it is carried will then be pulled out (Fig. 3) such distance as necessary to accommodate it to the size of the piece of luggage to be secured, and the longer or shorter arm of said gripper a, as may be desired, adjusted against the luggage, when cam lock 0 is tightened through depressing its handle p. This operation is repeated in reverse order when it is desired to remove the luggage and return the device to inoperative position.
Through such construction, it will be seen that when not in use, by simply loosening screw 71, through its handle, bracket arm 71 and the parts carried by it may be folded down alongside its supporting column 0 device is as follows: 6 to be in folded or and be out of the way, while arm j, because of its size, shape and location, will cause little, if any, inconvenience.
While the invention has been shown and described as applied to the front of a taxicab, it will be understood that it is equally applicable to other parts of such vehicle, as at the back or a side thereof, and also to vehicles other than taxicabs.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific construction of the mechanism employed for carrying out the invention without departing spirit, and that the invention is not be be restricted to the precise details of construe tion shown and described.
What is claimed 1 1, A luggage carrier for taxicabs and the like, comprising a supporting column, and an arm carrying bracket adjustable on said supporting column, one arm of said bracket said ad ustable arm also being provided with an adjustable eXten-- being adjustable,
sion.
2, A luggage carrier for taxicabs and the like, comprising a supporting column, an arm carrying bracket ad ustable on said supporting column, one arm of said bracket being adjustable, said adjustable arm also being provided with an adjustable extension, and means for securing said bracket, arm and, extension in adjusted position.
3. A luggage carrier for taxicabs and the like, comprising a supporting column, an arm carrying bracket adjustable on said supporting column, one arm of said bracket being adjustable, said adjustable arm also being provided with an adjustable extension, means for securing said bracket, arm and extension in adjusted position, and a stop on said extension.
In testimony wherof, I have hereunto "set In T hand.
