UNHTEID STATES- FLOYD E. LASURE, OF WA'UKESHA, WISCONSIN.
TOBACCO PIPE.
Application filed March 28, 1921. Serial Hi0. 456,453.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l[, FLOYD E. LASURE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waukesha,Waukesha County, Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Pipes, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention re ates to improvements in tobacco pipes, and the objects of my improvements are, first, to construct the bowl of a i e of concentric layers of difierent materia s selected to render the same more sightl lasting, and comfortable in use, and second to'supply means for regulating the draft thereof, this means being contrived also for occasional employment as a cleaning element for the draft hollow of the pipestem.
These objects I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompan ing drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a medial ongitudinal section ofmy improved pipe; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Flg. 3 IS a medial transverse section of the pipebowl, and Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the adjustable regulating and cleaning p S%milar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The pipe bowl 1 has the usual angular shank or stem 5 hollowed longitudinally at 6 to receive a diminished end of a mouthpiece 7 whose lon itudinal bore 8 communicates with said ollow, said hollow also communicating by means of an elongated slot 4 with the interior 16 of the bowl.
The cylindrical hollow 6 opens through the base of the bowl and is of considerable diameter in order to receive and fit a removable rock-plu 10 whose outer end is enlarged to provi e a rounded finger-piece 9. Said plug is provided with short inclined grooves 11 and 12 positioned on opposite sides thereof with their inner ends in communication with said hollow 6, and their outer ends closed within the pipe base. Grooves 11 and 12 may be of difierent dimensions and said plug may be rocked to place eit er of them into full communication or adjustably restricted communication with said slot 4: to vary the draft of the pipe, or the grooves may be placed out of communication with the slot 4.
The adjustment of the draft by rocking the plug 10 insures even combustion, whatever may be the texture, quality, of humidity of the tobacco.
The numeral 13 denotes a pair of small rods projecting fixedly from the inner end of the plug 10 and carrying on their other ends a fixed disk 14 having a central opening 15. This disk 14 is of the same diameter as said plug, and therefore, fits the walls of and the stem 5, and render them more lasting and comfortable to use, I prefer to construct the bowl part of concentric layers of substances of differing properties. The outer shell or body 1 and 5 of said bowl and stem is preferably made in one piece, from aluminum or the like, which is not only enduring but is very light, and has a pleasing appearance and is easily molded into shape. The next inner layer 2 is formed from some substance which 1s non-conductive to heat, such as asbestos fiber or the like, while the inner lining 3 may be made from baked clay or other substance of a refractory nature. It will be seen that both the inner and outer layers assure longevity as against the actions of heat or shocks respectivel while the intermediate layer 2 prevents heat being conducted to the outer shell in an uncomfortable degree. Other materials may be used for the pipe layers which will preserve the said desired qualities.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A tobacco-pipe comprising an open bowl and a tubular stem in communication therewith, the base of the bowl having an opening in communication with the bore of said stem, a rock-plug in part of the length of said bore having a longitudinal groove to effect occasional varying size communication between said bowl b way of said groove, said opening and t e bore of said stem when rocked arms on said plug, and an orlficed scraping disk mounted on said arms in said bore to fit the latter and scrape its walls when the plug-is moved longitudinally.
2. A tobacco-pipe comprising an open bowl and a tubular stem in communication therewith, the base of'the bowl having an opening in communication with the bowl and with the bore of said stem, a removable plug in said opening grooved longitudinally to control the communication between said bowl and the bore of said stem adjustably,
said bo-wl being-composed of different materials arranged in concentric layers.
3. A tobacco-pipe comprising a bowl and a tubular stem-in communication therewith, an orificed scraping disk mounted slidably in the bore of said stem, and a mouth-piece mounted on said stem having a diminished inner end passing "through and fitting the orifice in said disk to deposit moisture forwardly of the disk in the bore of the stem.
Signed at Waukesha, Wis. this 26th day of Feby. 1921.
FLOYD E. LASURE.
