' EAGSILRM A. L. LEVY SPLIT RIM TOOL Filed March 28. 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 te-d duly ll), i323.
' ALBERT ntnv r, or Yourros'rown, orrro.
sPnrr-nrivr TOOL.
Application filed March 192a. Seria1Nou5 l7389.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that ALBERT L. LEVY, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngswn, in the county of Mahoning and State cwOhio, has inert-ed certain new and useul Improvements in which the following is specification.
My invention relates to tools for contracting gande rpand-ing split rims during the removal andreplacing of a tire.
-Qne of the objects f'the invention is to provide a three tool which will have a positive push and pull. 7
Another object to provide a tool which has such a range of adjustment, that it will readily fit any of the ordinary size rims.
A. further object is the provision of a construction in which the parts can largely be stamped out of metal thus permitting cheap quantity. production.
A still further object relates to the arrangelnentof parts which will permit of folding into a compact article which may be stored away under the seat of an automobile when not in use.
lVith these general objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel and pe culiar features of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the tool in contracting position upon the rim of a wheel.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in expanding position.
8 is an enlarged detail view, the full line position showing the parts in contracting position and the dotted lines in expanding position. i
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the parts in partial folded position.
F ig. 5 is an end view of the tool in folded position.
In the embodiment illustrated, the tool constituting my invention comprises a pair of frogs 2 having oppositely threaded apertures 3 for engagement by the oppositely threaded adjusting screw] 4%, operated by means of a wrench which-engages the headed nut 5. Each frog is provided with three slots 6, in which one end of the links 7 of the lazy tongs is pivotally mounted. The slots in the frog are equally spaced apart with a corresponding side 8 of each able members, lazy slot lying along the radial line of the frog, ..cs.in Fig. 2. The slots in one frog are locat d along one side of the radial lines and in the other frog along the other side due 'to the fact that the links 7 lie in different Split-Rim Tools, of
planes. Pivoted'to the ends of links 7 are.
other links 9 which are pivoted together at 10. Pivotall secured to each link 9 at rim engaging hooks 12 which are provided with slanting faces 13 so that as Operation.
When the tool is in collapsed folded condition, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the frogs 2 are in their farthest apart position. When about to remove the rim, the lazy tongs are expanded by rotating the screw 1 until they are in such a position that the hooks 12 will en age the top of the rim 13. The lazy tongs are then contracted by opposite rotation of the adjusting screw 1, the rim engaging elements slipping down into position as shown in Fig. 3. By continuing to turn the screw l, the rim will be contracted as shown in Fig. 1 and the tire can then be removed.
When it is desired to expand the rim after contraction, the screw 1 is now rotated in the opposite direction until the swiveled rim engaging member 15 contacts with the inner side of the rim. The member 15 provides a flat broad bearing surface and regardless of the angle at which it strikes the rim will always turn the flat side thereof against the rim. As the member 15 moves up into engagement with the rim the rim engaging loooks 12 drop to one side as shown in dotted lnes.
From the above description it will be ap parent thatI have produced a device of the character enumerated as desirable, and while I have illustratedand described the preferred form of the invention, it will be understood that I reserve the right to all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Therefore what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
L'A rim tool comprising relatively movtongs pivotally mounted on the said members and rim engaging elements carried by the lazy tongs.
2. A rim tool comprising relatively movable members, a plurality of radially arranged sets of lazy tongs pivotally mounted on the said members and rim engaging elements carried by the lazy tongs.
3. A rim tool comprising relativelymov able members, lazy tongs pivot-ally mounted on the said members and rim engaging hooks pivotally mounted on the lazy tongs.
i. A rim tool comprising relatively movable members, lazy tongs pivotally mounted on the said members and a pivotally mounted element carried by the lazy tongs for engaging the inner side of the rim in expanding position of the tool.
5. A rim tool comprising relatively movable members, a plurality of equidistant lazy tongs pivotally mounted on the said members, a pair of rim engaging hooks pivotally mounted on the said lazy tongs to engage the rim in contracting position of the tool and a pivotally mounted element for engaging the inner side of the rim in expanding position of the tool.
6. A rim tool comprising relatively movable members, means for moving the said members towards and from each other, lazy tongscarried by the said members and provided. with rim engaging elements, the said lazy tongs being in collapsed nested position when the said members are in their farthest apart position. i
7. A tool for expanding and contracting split rims and comprising radially arranged lazy tongs, means carried by the outer ends of the lazy tongs for engaging the rim, and means cooperating with the inner ends of the lazy tongs for extending and contracting the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALBERT L. LEVY.
