MCGOWAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Hurley, vin l'the county of Gimarron 'and StateofOkIahOma, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in l/Vell- DrillingTools, of which the following is a specification,reference being had to the accompanying drawings."4
This invention relates to improvements in wellV drilling tools and more particularly to means for connecting the drill with its stem.
An important object of the invention is to provide means to prevent relative rotation of the drill and stem which is at the present time the common cause of losing the drill in the well, which always results in an V expensive fishing operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be employed upon the drills and stems now in use without materially altering the construction thereof. l
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, eilicient in its operation, and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanyingdrawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodimentl of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.

Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a drill bit and 11 a threaded bit pin formed upon the Shank 12 of the drill and adapted for engagement in a threaded socket 13 formed in the lower end of a stem 14.
In accordance with my invention the' shank 12 of the bit is externally screwthreaded, as indicated at 15, with left-hand threads, the threads of the bit pin and bit pin socket being right-handed in the usual construction. If these "threads are lefthanded, the shank is oppositely screwthreaded thereto, for a purpose presently to appear. The lower end of the stem has a portion thereof reduced upon the exterior to the inside diameter of the threads formed upon the shank of the bit, as indicated at 16, and the stem is provided at a point spaced thereabove with an annular key socket 17 adapted to receive therein an annular sectional collar 18. The numeral 19 designates a sleeve having an internal bore 2O of a size substantially equal to the outside diameter of the sectional collar 18 when assembled. At its upper end this bore is reduced to an opening 21 of the same diameter as the diameter of the stem 14, thereby forming a shoulder 22 adapted to abut against the upper face of the portions of the collar extending beyond the outer surface of the stem to limit the downward movement of the sleeve 19. The lower end of the sleeve is provided with an iii-turned flange 23 having its inner face provided with screw-threads 24 adapted for coaction with the threads 15 of the shank 12.
In the use of my device the sleeve is slipped upon the end of the stem 14 until the opening 25 formed in the side wall thereof aligns with the collar groove 17. This opening is of sufficient size to permit insertion of the sections 18a of the collar 18 therethrough so that they may be engaged in the groove. After the collar has been assembled in the groove the sleeve is moved upon the stem until the Hanged portion thereof is fully engaged with the reduced portion at the lower end of the stem thereof, exposing the lower end of the stem to permit engagement of the bit pin 11 in the socket 13 thereof. After the bit pin has been fully engaged in the socket, the sleeve is moved downwardly until the threads of the flange 23 thereof are engaged with the threads 15 of the shank 12 and the sleeve threaded upon this shank until the binding movement of the shoulder 22 against the exposed face of the collar 18 prevents further rotation. It will be obvious that this binding action will tend to prevent any relative movement of the stem 14 and sleeve 19 and it will furthermore be obvious that the bit pin and shank being oppositely threaded, any tendency of the bit to rotate relatively to l without materially `the stemwould tend to result in lengthening of the distance between the engaged portion of the sleeve and the collar 18, which endency would be fully prevented by the rey.V e
From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that a coupling member constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for the purpose lor which it is intended lor the reason that it may be readily appliedto'the bits and stems now in use and that it will prevent tendency of the bit and stem to separate. lt will, of course, be understood that in the present vconstruction of the bit and stems wherein the'bit pin 1l is usually tapered and threaded', it requires but a slight relative rotation or' the bit and stem to permit separation thereof. lt will furthermore be obvious that the construction hereinbefore employed is capable of some change and modification departing from the spirit of my invention and l accordingly do not limit myself thereto except as hereinafter claimed.
