Description
July 3, 1923. RAWLMW J. O. CHABOT SEPARABLE BUTTON Filed NOV. 2, 1922 Tina, l;
1 I i 1,461,009 PATENT OFFICE.
CHABOT, OF NORTH ATTLEBORQ, MASSACHUSETTS, sssrenon To GEORGE L. PAINE COMPANY, or NORTH ATTLEBOR-O, MASSACHUSETTS.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
To. all whom it may concern. .Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. CHAeoT, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in separable Buttons, of which thefollowing is a specification. y a
This. invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in separable buttons, and the primary object thereof is to provide a button ofthistype which? embodies improved connecting means .for the two members allowing sameto beireadily connected and disconnected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simplified form of snap fastening wherein the same is heldin position without the use of solder or otherextraneous fastening means.
The invention still further aims to provide a separable button which embodies a minimum of parts and which can be cheaply produced and assembled tot thereby economize in the cost of manufacture.
The invention also has for its object the provision of a male and female connection which prevents relative turning or rotary movement of the two heads of the button.
Still further and other objects will be later set forth. and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawing Figure l, is a side elevation of the invention;
Figure 2, is a section on line 22 of Fig- Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the button is composed of two parts each of which latter has a head 1 and 2 respectively a tubular shank or post 3 and 4:, and a disk-like base 5 and 6, the shanks or posts being of substantially rectangular cross section. The heads and bases are of substantially similar contour, although they may vary as to shape or design, as desired.
The base 6 of the female member of the button is formed with a rectangular slot, forming shoulders or fingers 7, while the hollow shank 3 of the male member of the button receives on its interior a flat substantially U-shaped catch member 8. The

catch is also formed of rectangular crosssection'and is comformably received in the hollow shank at, consequently relative turning or rotary movement of the two button members is prevented.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the entire device embodies but three parts namely the two button members and the clasp or catch member, and since the catch member is easily and quickly applied to one of the parts, a very simple and economical structure is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a separable button, a pair of members each having a head, a shank of substantially rectangular cross section and a base, the base of one member being formed with a slot providing abutments which extend into the shank interior, and a catch of substantially U-formation having a circular aperture in its base and having its arms formed with U-shaped cut-outs to receive the abutments one of the sides of the shank of the other member being formed with a pressed-out part of concavo-convex cross section which extends into the circular aperture of the catch to secure the latter in position.
2. In a separable button, a pair of members having heads, tubular substantially rectangular shanks and bases, one of the bases being formed with a slot providing shoulders, and a substantially u-shaped catch received in the shank of the other member and having cut-outs to engage the shoulders, the shank of said other member having a pressed-out part engaging between the arms of the catch to-hold the latter in the shank of the other member. 3. In a separable button, a pair of members having tubular shanks of substantially rectangular crosssection, a catch of substantially rectangular cross-section having one end fitted in one shank and having an'opening, a side of said shank having an integral bowed portion of concavo-convex cross section engaged. in the openingo'l the catch to hold the latter against movement relative to the said shank, the other end of the catch being receivable in the other shank, and means in said last named shank to engage the catch so to latch the two members together.
4-. In a separable button, a pair of members having tubular shanks, a catch having one end received in one shank and having a part formed to lock the catch to the shank, the shank having an integral concavo-convex part formed to engage saidlocking part to lock the catch to said shank, the opposite end of the catch being receivable in the other shank, and means in said other shank to engage the catch to latch the members together.
5. In a separable button, a pair of members having tubular shanks and a catch in the shank of one member formed to snap into engagement, with the: other shank, said catch having an opening and said first named shank having an integral concavoconvex part in one side wall the convex side a of which is received in the opening and extends adjacent to the opposite side wall of the first'named shank to lock the catch to the shank.
' 6.111 a separable button, a pair of members each having a hollow shank and a base, and a catch having an openingin one end and the latter arranged in one of the shanks, the base of the other shank having a slot of less length thanthegreatest width of the latter shank to form a pair of abutments which extend intothe shank interior and which are for engagement with the free end of the catch, the first named shank having an integral inwardly extending portion engaged in thecatch opening to hold the
