Application filed September 11, 1922. .Serial No. 587,575.
To all wh'omit mag concern." i
Be it known that 'I,THOMAS BURDEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a residentof the city of Warrnambool, inthe c-ounty of Vill'ier's, State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certainlnew and useful Improvements Relatingto the Correction of Type in Printers Galleys, ofwhichthe following isa specification, v 1n the correction of errors in type in printers galleys it is the practice, after. the type, has been set either by, hand or machine, to take a pull or proof ofthe set up type, this proof sheet being then checked and; corrected by the proof reader after which the type in the galleryiscorrected byreference to the proof sheet.
Such method of correction. is objectionable owing to the strain on the eyesight and thetime and labor involved in locating the lines. of type requiring correction in the gal- The object of thepresent invention is to provide a simple and effective meansfor quickly locating for correctionerrors in the set up or composedtype thereby to a great extent overcoming; the aforesaid objections and facilitating the-typecorrecting operation besides resulting in greater accuracy.
The invention involves meansfor printing upon, the proof sheet, as it is pulled from the type, a vertical row or column of index marks; or characters such,:for instance, as numerals, which are arranged consecutively oneabove another alongside the column of printed matter on the proof; and a. suitable type line locator adapted for-placing alongside the. column'of typein the galley, this locator bearing. a second column of index marks or characters, corresponding in appearance andrelativeposition with the infe'rring to. the index characters on the corrected proof sheet and to the corresponding characters of the locator: the lines of type requiring correction may be instantly locat d. 1 v
Various constructional forms of device maybe employed in carr'ying out the invention. and it willybe readily understood that the invention-is not limited to the, particular forms hereinafter specificallydescribed but embraces other alternative, devices for effecting equivalent results.
Referring to the drawings which form part of this specification Figure 1 is a plan of a galley of type With one form of device in accordance with-the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a diagram of-part of a proof sheet hearing. printed index characters in accordance with the invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of portion of the device seen in Figure 1.
Figure 4 shows portion of an alternative form of device in accordance with the invention. M
t Figure 5 illustrates the use of the device seen in Figure 4:. i l
Figure 6 shows a further modification of the invention removed from the galley, part of which is seen in the background.
Figure .7 shows theembodiment seen in Figure 6 applied to the galley.
Figures .8 and 9 illustrate a further modification of the invention.
i .The invention includes a first verticalrow or column of index numerals, lettersor other suitable characters ,A'formed in raised typeor otherwise of a reproductive nature whereby they may. be inked and printed on the proof sheet simultaneously with the lines of type which are indicated at B in the galley C. y
The index characters A may be formed on a bar or like member D of metal or other suitable material, or on a separate metal strip E suitably attached to said bar-like member, the arrangement being such that the reproductive characters A aredisposcd type-highor atthe same level characters of the type lines B.
as the 1 type The column of index characters A extends longitudinally of the gallery and at right ,tion marks F may also be formed on the face of the bar-like member D adjacent the characters A and the adjoining ends of the type lines 13. Such graduation marks, which are not intended. for reproduction, may be d s:
posed opposite each line of type or otherwise spaced as desired.
In combination with the foregoing I employ a type line locator bearing a second vertical row or column of index numerals,
letters or characters G which correspond in appearance and position, relative to the type lines, with'the reproductive characters A. It will be noted that the latter index characters are inverted relative to the second column of characters G. The characters A .thus correspond with the usual inverted position of the types which are laced upside down in the galley, the lower end of which coincides with the head of the type column, so that the resultant printed matter will read from left to right.
The second colmn of index characters G is not intended for reproduction and may be "printed or otherwise inscribed or markedon the first column of index characters may also be marked on the surface H adjacent the characters G.
It will'be evident that the particular"c0nstructional form of device employedin accordance with the invention may vary considerably, for instance, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 the bar-like member D may be formed integral with or suitably fixed to the galley G so as to form a permanent part thereof. It thus constitutes one or the side walls of the galley, against which wall the ends of the type lines B are placed as shown.
Alternatively, as seen in Figuresfi and 7, the bar-like member D may be formed separately from and adapted to be placed "against the side of an ordinary galley C.
I11 this case the member D may have formed on or attached to one of its ends a foot J which extendsat right angles to the member D and is adapted to be placed against the adjacent end of the galley as in Figure 7 so'that the 'columns of index characters A and G are kept squarely in position relative to the galleyand the lines of type.
In both the embodiments illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and Figures 6 and 7 it will be seen that the second column of index characters Gr is disposed a a lower level than the type-high column A so that the lower column G of non-reproductive characters will not be touched by the inking roller when the column A and the type lines Bare being inked to print the proof sheet.
. In the alternative embodiments seen in Figures a, -5, 8 and 9, the bar-D forms an entirely independent movable integer of subting the requisite type lines.
stantially rectangular form in cross section and having a height approximating the height of the type lines and a width or thicknessw-hich may be considerably less-than its height as shown. As seen in Figures 4: and 5 the reproductive column of characters A. may be carried on one longitudinal side or face of the bar D whilst the second or type locating columnot characters G is carried on the opposite longitudinal face of the bar. By this means it is merely necessary to reverse or invert the bar, after the proof sheet has been pulled from theftype andthe characters A, so that thecharacter's G thus :tace upwardly when the set up type is being corrected from the proof sheet.
hen the bar D seen in Figure i is used,
the galley may be provide'dwitha longitudinal divisional wall K forming {an elongated pocket or ompartment nio accom modate the bar between said divisional wall and the adjacent outer side-wallet the galumn of index characters A is carried on one of the longitudinal sides 01' faces of the bar D whilst the second columnof characters G is placed on one of the side faces atfright angles to the face carryingthe column A.
It is thus merelyneces'sary after the proof has been taken, with the"bar D in the position shown in Figure 8, to lay'the bar on "its side adjacent the set up type with the characters G upturned as in Figure-9 for locaform of the invention is particularly adapt ed foruse withan ordinary galley, as the bar D be placed in the galley as in Figure 8 and laid on one'side thereof asin Figure 9.
In using the invention, inkis applied to the set up type and the positioned column of reproductive characters A and a pull taken therefrom on the proof sheet M (Figure The result is that a column of printed characters N is transferred to 'the pr'oof sheet by the raised or reproductive characters A alongside the-printed lines 0 taken from the type B. The proof sheet is now corrected by the proof reader in the usual manner and the corrected proof sheet is then placed beside thegalley. By the operator noting the printed characters 'N opposite or nearly oposite any particular line on 'the proof's'heet and then referring to the corresponding index character of the typelocating coluinn G, which is now *dispose'dbeside the typ'e B, he may immediately locate the reqai-re'd type line which is to'beeerreeted. -Th'e l'at- This latter llll ter maythen be -altered orreiiioved or an omitted line inserted in the usual manner. In this regarditavill b'e un'derstooclthat the operation of correcting the set up type be started from the bottom of-the galley or p the head of the type column so that, in the event of two or more additional lines of type being inserted, the alignment of the type relative to the index characters will be preserved. Thus by working upwardly from the bottom of the galley only the type which has already been corrected is displaced.
To additionally facilitate the location of the required type lines, certain of the characters G may be distinguished from others by coloring or like means; for instance, when numerals are employed the numeral 10 and multiples thereof may be marked in one color and the other characters in a different color or odd and even numbers can be distinguished in a similar manner.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
