clear, and 'exactfdescrijptionvof the invention, s uch as will enable' others skilledin the4 art to which itappertains'to make and luse the same.
This invention relates tonnewfandfusei'ul'l improvements in holders andp'articularlyto devices Jfor holding maps;'--A fil' One object of the invention is to provide a device for holding maps, charts, and the like-,whichv is formed for j fi'rm and easy at. tachln'ent tothe steering'coluinn of an automobile, within full' view of the driver, at `all times.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which includes means for releasably holding a map or chart inl proper. position vfor the inspection of the driver,v
without interfering with his control of' the automobile, and which is capable of adjust-v ment to various positions.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the'accompanying.
the outer edge 'faceof the Ina-p holding board or base, showing the map holding clamps..
Referring particularlyto the accompany ing drawing, lOrepresents a portion of the steering column ofan automobile in connection with which the invention. is adapted for use. v Y
The base 11', of the device is in the form of a flat board, made from wood, metal, vor other suitable stili:l material, and on which the map, chart, record sheet, orfthe like is adapted to be placed. Hinged to the inner edge of the board, and at the ends thereof, are the legs of the yokes 12, the outer corner portions of which lare formed with the cr'riaLEs'HfsnRnE AND'enoRen CTBERL'IN, or niLimzELL,` Innnro*` loops13 extending a short distancebeyond V l the outer longer edge fof .ftheboard lSetcuredtothe outer corners ofl theboard 10, are `the metal plates, 14,:each ofwhich has tlienotohedwings 15 extending atright -an.
gage the loops 13. Theportion ofthe wire of' the yoke, which. extends between gles' to thepwider aces'oltl the board,-and in .the notches of .which are arranged 'toen'-v the loops 13.is adapted. to .be flexedy in-.` wardly, so thattherloopsofthe yoke may yhelv f easily released fromfthe wings, when. it desired-.toremove or replacethe map or; chart; Itglwill ybe noted that there'arertwo of these yokes 12, one-on' each-sident the board, so that two to theboard.r n Y l metal plate 16, the major portion of which extendspbeyond the-edge of the board, and
Jformed in the projecting portion of lthe plate, and atQone end, is a curved slot 17, v
while at thev other end of the plate there is formed a keyhole slot 18. Disposed in longitudinalparallel relation Vto the said innen edgeV of the board is' ametal bary or stripl 19, having a rearwardly extending curved l' jaw 20 for engagement with one side of the steering column of the automobile. On the upperface of the inner enduof the said jaw there is formed a key lug 21 which is en-V gagedthrough the ykeyhole slot 18, to retain that end of the strip in position. In the otherend of the strip 19there is threadedly engaged a screw 22, the stem of which is engaged in the .slot 17, the head bearing on the plate, at the sides of the slot, to hold the strip in diiierent pivotal adjustments on the head-orlug 21. ,By this arrangement ther v-` into ydifferent angular positions. Pivotally vboard mayfbeswung in. a horizontal planeconnected to the jaw carried end ofthe strip y 19v is a link 23, and pivotally connected to the outer end of this link is a second jaw y 24, which engages with the opposite side of l the steering columnto secure the deviceY in proper position. 'A headed member725 is carried-by the stem. ofthe jaw l24, and is' slidable ina longitudinalslot 26, formed in the strip 19. On theend yofthe strip 19, remote from the jaw 20, there is formed a lug 27, and engagedthrough this'lug is av screw 28,4 theend of whose stem bears against the outer Jface of the jaw 24, and by means of which the jaw is movedftoward the 'l jaw 20,.,or clampingenga-gement With the steering column. The screw 22', aswell as the screw 28, has a milled or knurled head, by meansofwhich'the same may beturned.y
Bymeans ofthe head or lug 21, and the keyhole slot 187 When the serewi- 22 isv loosened, the clamp may be swung outward! ly, so that the lug 21 will" drop ythrough# the vsupporting base, map retaining means on the base, ajaw member movablyV supported on the-base, a second'jaw1 movablv carriedlbyy the first jaw, means. for adjusting thefjaws toward and-` awayl from each other, and` means Joradjusting the jaws toward and aW-ayfrom i the, base.
2. A map or the like holder comprising a base,v means forf retainingamapbn the base7 azplate secured tosoneuedgeof the-base and and removably marriedl by the plate and having a supporting engaging jaw formed thereon,4 the otherVV end of they Asaid member being slidably adjustable on the plate, and a second jawpivotally and adjustably carried by the said member and movable toward and away fromthe rstvjaw.
3. A Inapor the like holder comprising a base, a plate secured to, and@ projecting from one. edge of thebase,.said plate having an arcuate slotfin onerend and: axkeyhole;
slot in itlsvother end, a member.y havingnarkey and having a, jaw formed on Oneend adj acent the said lug, a screw carried. by the other end of the' member. and engagedinthe arcuate slot, the:A member having a longitudi-v` nal; slot, a` jaw having. a projectionI slidable; in the longitudinal slot,` al link pivotal-1yconnecting the stem of the second jaw Withfthez` said member, andr a screw carried by: the member and engaged with' thesecond jaw.
