VEST.
Application led March 2, 1922.
To all whom t may conce/m:
Be it known that I, PHILIP E. HEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon Hill, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use- ,ful Vest, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention comprehends a novel Vest which is provided with a novel construction and arrangement of a seam.
In vests as heretofore manufactured, if it becomes necessary to alter the size of the vest, skilled labor is required, since the lining must be unstitched around the neck, the vest turned inside out, the seam altered then the vest turned back and the lining sewed in position.
In accordance with my present invention, the vest can be altered to have the proper fit and set on the wearer by any seamstress without rendering it necessary to employ an expert bushelman for this purpose and it is necessary to alter only one seam.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed' description.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment thereof which is at present preferred by me, since this embodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities 0f which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not lim ited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure l represents, in perspective, a vest, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a sectional view of a portion of the vest, at one stage of the manufacture.
Figure 3 represents a sectional v'View of portions of the vest at another stage of the manufacture.
Figure 4 represents a sectional View show ing certain of the parts after they have been stitched together and one side deflected upon itself.
Figure 5 represents a section on line .5-5 of Figure l.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Serial No. 540,402.
Referring to the drawings.
l designates a vest embodying my invention. The vest in t-he usual manner is pro! vided with the front portions 2 and the back portions 3. Each front portionQ has; the outer fabric 4f provided with the usual lining 5 which in proximity to the seam at the side extends to the edge of the fabric 1i. A piping 6 in the form of a U-shaped strip is then secured by means of a line of stitching 7 so that the piping covers the edges of the fabric 4 and the lining 5 in proximity to the seam which is 'to be formed. The back 3 consists of the outer fabric 8 and the lining 9 these being turned in, as at l0, and secured by a line of stitchingl 11 in order to give the proper finish to the sides of the vest.
portion 3 and the parts are stitched together' in close proximity to the edge of the piping, as indicated at 14;, thereby forming a iiap 13. The portion covered by the piping is, then deflected over, as at l2 and the 'liap 13 is secured to the lining of the front portion by stitches l5 known in the trade as tacking.
If the vest as manufactured does not prop-- erly fit the purchaser all that it is necessary to do is to cut the line of stitching 14 so that the proper fit is made and then the front portion 2 and the back portion 3 are stitched together. The portion l2 is then pressed down, the flap 13 folded over and secured to the lining 5 of the front portion of the vest.
In this manner the vest can be enlarged or reduced in size without affecting or changing the set of the garment as originally manufactured.
Vests as ordinarily manufactured cannot be altered by an inexperienced person to enlarge or reduce their size without varying the set of the vest as originally manufactui-ed, and when articles of this characterI are sold to dealers in smaller' towns, it is necessary to carry many different sizes of vests in stock. In accordance with my pres-- ent invention this necessity of carrying eXtra stock is eliminated and the flap 13 is origi` nally made wide enough to provide for any alterations which may be necessary.
Ordinarily in practice it is necessary to make but one of the seams formed between the front and backportions of the vest in the manner herein set forth but it will of course be apparent that if desired both of The side 2 is then laid against the back such seams may be constructed in accordance with my present invention.
It vvill now be apparent that l have devised a novel vest Which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and While l have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that this embodiment is susceptible oif modification in various particulars Without departiiig` from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacri [icing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A vest comprising front and back portions, each of said portions including a lining, the front portion having` its rear edges enclosed by piping, the back portion being stitched to said front portion -in close proxiniity to the piping and forming a flap, the piped portion being deflected on the lining of the front portion and the lap of said back portion being folded over said piped portion and secured to said front portion whereby the size of the Vest can be varied Without altering the lining.
PHILIP E. HEIM.
