Description

him 26, N2.
c. SCUDD ER HINGE FOR VESSEL COVERS FM. Feb. 1922 Enuwfzw Patented June 26, I923.
CHARLES SGUDDER, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
H nes FOR vnssnr covnns.
Application filed February 3, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C'I-mnnns Sounnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at 285 Lawrence Street, Long Island City, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Vessel Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an appliance for kitchen utensils and particularly to hinges for the lids or covers of cooking and other vessels.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a new and improved hinge readily applicable to the covers of cooking and other vessels, one that is easily adjustable to vessels and covers of various sizes and shapes, and one that is of simple constructlon and therefore cheap to produce and proof against faulty operation.
With these objects in view I provided a device, one end of which is bent or cut out in a manner to provide a recess adapted to engage the handl of a vessel, and provided adjacent to such recess With a shoulder or abutment adapted to engage the wall, bead or other part of the vessel. The other end of the device forms substantially a closed loop serving as a guide or holder for a clamp. The clamp is mounted on the said loop in a manner to be readily displaceable with respect to the said shoulder or abut ment, and is adapted for holding the cover or lid of the vessel.
Preferably, the device is formed by suitably bending one piece of wire of galvanized iron or other suitable material to form a shoulder, recess and a loop, and another piece of wire to form a clamp surrounding at its two ends the loop. If desired the various parts of the device may be manufactured of more than one piece of material.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan View of the hinge, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the hinge as applied to a cooking vessel.
One part of the hinge is produced by bending a piece of galvanized wire to form a shoulder 1. A suitable distance above this the knob 10 which the cover may Serial No. 533,794.
shoulder the wire is bent back to form a recess 2, then thewire is twisted together enrs brought together in a loop at 4. The two sides of the loop 4 serve as a guide for a clamp 5, also made of galvanized iron Wire, and bent in a manner to hook around the sides of the loop 4 The hooks 6 and 7 frictionally engage the sides of loop 4 and will maintain the clamp 5 in its displaced position. The clamp 5 is so formed as to constitute a resilient holder for the knob 10 of a cover 11.
hen in use, the part 2 is hooked over the handle 13 of a vessel 12 and serves as a .lt'ulcrurn. The clamp 5 is positioned to hold of the cover 11. The swinging movement of the hinge around its fulcrum 2 is limited by the shoulder 1 engaging the wall of the vessel 12 or, if the handle 13 is large enough, the hinge will tip back until the'shoulder 1 engages the bead 14 of the vessel 12.
In order to apply the hinge to vesselsthe lid knobs l0 otwhich are in a higher or lower horizontal plane than the top of handle 13, the hinge should be bent to insure a tight fitting closure between the lid and the vessel. 1
What I claimis: v
1. In combination,a vessel provided with a handle and. a cover having a projection, a hinge, a recessed portion or said hinge en gaging said handle around which the cover may be rotated, and a movable clamp for said hinge to engage and hold the projection on said cover.
2. In a hinge for vessel covers, a recessed portion for engaging the vessel around be rotated, and means movable relative to said recessed portion for engaging and holding said cover.
3. In a hinge for vessel covers, a recessed portion by means of which the hinge is pivoted on the vessel, the cover being rotatable around the pivot point, a shoulder for limiting the swinging of said hinge and cover, and a clamp movable with respect to said recessed portion for engaging and holding the cover of the vessel.
4. In a hinge forvessel covers, a Wire bent at 6 and 7. 1'
to form a shoulder, a recessed portion and cover around said fulcrum, and a clamp for a loop, and another Wire bent to form a holding the cover in. all of its rotary poclamp for the Vessel cover and slidably sitions.
t 10 mounted on said 100 In testimon whereof I have si ned m P y a b y 5 '5. In a removable hinge for vessel covers name to this specification this 2nd day of a fulcrum applicable to the vessel, a shoulder February 1922. for limiting the rotation of the hinge and CHARLES sounnnn.
