E. LABENZ SECTIONAL MATTRESS Filed March 20. 1922 C212 5! a e? Fatent June 119, 31923.
barren stares ERNST LABEHZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
SECTIONAL MATTRESS.
Application filed march 20, 1922. Serial No. 545,046.
To (111 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST LABENZ, a citizen of Germany, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, reference bemg had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a sectional mattress which may be easily handled by a housewife or maid and the sections thereof re-arranged from time to time so that the mattress as an entirety will present a level surface in contradist-inction to mattresses having depressed portions, broken down edges and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mattress section, cushion or other up- 2Q holstery structure wherein a multiplicity of coiled springs are housed and protected against the accumulation of dust, dirt and other matter, the construction of the mattress sections being sanitary without interfering with the cushioning effect or resiliency of springs therein.
A further object of this invent-ion is to provide a simple and durable mattress section in which are located encased springs,
W the springs being disposed in series so as to be conveniently handled when making up the mattress section.
These and other objects are attained by a construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed provided with a sectional mattress in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a mattress section;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mattress section showing the lower face thereof;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a mattress section, and
Fig. 5 is a plan of a series of encased springs.
The mattress is composed of a plurality of sections. preferably three in number, as
shown in Fig. 1 and it is apparent that the mattress sect-ions can be shifted about. from time to time so that no particular mattress section receives greater wear than the other mattress sections, and since the mattress sections are identical in construction, I deem it only necessary to describe in detail one of said sections.
Each section comprises an oblong or rectangular frame 1 preferably made of wood and mounted on said frame is a bottom piece 2 in the form of one or more boards or plates secured to the frame and provided with a. plurality of openings 3.
Mounted on the bottom piece 2 are groups or series of coiled or helical springs 4 and these springs are placed in bags or containers 5, preferably made of fabric with the bags or containers divided into pockets, each adapted to receive a spring. With the spring so encased dust, dirt and other matter cannot accumulate upon the springs and a series of the springs can be easily handled. After the groups of springs are arranged on the bottom piece 2 the ends of the spring containers or bags are connected to the bottom piece 2, as at 6, and this will anchor the end springs 4 relative to the bottom piece and those springs which are at the longitudinal side edges of the bottom piece may be anchored in a similar manner, while those springs forming the central part of the mattress section may be left loose in the containers relative to the bottom piece, it being impossible for the pocketed springs to become accidentally displaced.
Enclosing the assembled containers 5 is a fabric casing 7 having its edges carried under the frame 1 and suit-ably secured by tacks 8 or other fastening means and this same fastening means may hold in place the marginal edges of a bottom shield 9 that may be made of rubber with its central por tion suitably secured to the bottom piece 2 by one or more tacks 10 or other fastening means. The bottom shield 9 may have openings 11 registering with the openings 3 in the bottom piece 2. The shield 9 will cushion the frame 1 when resting on bed rails 12 or other supports and will preventdust and other matter from accumulating on the wooden frame; it being easier to clean the shield than the frame 1 and the bottom piece 2.
On the casing 7 is placed an inner cushion 13 and on this cushion is an outer cushion 14, said inner and outer cushions being retained in place by a cover 15 which has its marginal edges sandwiched between the edges of the shield 9 and the edges of the casing 7 to be held by the tacks 8 or fastening means attached to the frame 1. The manner of rebottom piece 2 and the inner cushion 13.
Attached to the ends of the frame 1 by tacks 15 or other fastening means are straps 16 providing bail handles 17 at the ends of the mattress section so that the mattress section can be easily handled. The straps 16 may be of fabric or leather and it is obvious that similar or other materials may be used for the cover 14 and the casing 7 The inner and outer cushions 13 and 14 may be of any suitable upholstery and by virtue of series of springs being mounted in pocket containers it is possible to easily repair a mattress section should certain springs lose resiliency or become otherwise useless as a cushioning device.
ile in the drawing-there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements meat- 40 are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is A mattress section comprising a frame, a bottom piece on said frame and provided with openings, containers on said bottom piece and provided with individual pockets, springs in the individual pockets of said containers, means connecting the end and side containers to said frame with the central containers loose on said bottom piece, a casing over said containers and connected to said frame, cushions on said casing, a cover over said cushions and connected to said frame, and a cushioning shield on the lower Witnesses:
