Description

June 5, 1923. a ma G. s. EARDLEY SMOKER S APPLIANCE Filed Sent. 1921 'fi i ipja INVENTOR. 6. 5, [ARDLEV ATTORNEY Patented June 5, T923.
UNITE-ED STATES GEORGE S. EARDLEY, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
sivroxnas APPLIANCE.
Application filed September 7, 1921. Serial No. 499,061.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoaen S. EARDLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smokers Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved smokers appliance which owing to certain structural features is especially adapted as a convenience for holding matches in reach of the occupants of motor and the like vehicles. The appliance also offers means for holding lighted and partly consumed cigars,
cigarettes and pipes which are temporarily discarded by the smoker when leaving the vehicle to enter places where it would not be practical for him to carry a lighted cigar or the like.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of'this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the appliance,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cut blank from which the appliance is made.
Referring to the drawings in detail, one of the important features of the invention consists in producing the appliance in a cheap, simple and convenient manner, therefore only a single sheet of metal is used and with the same preferably cut to leave a blank as shown in Figure 8. This blank includes 4.0 an irregular shaped sheet of light metal weakened along the dotted lines 5 to leave a back 6, a front 7, a bottom 8 and two side walls 9 and 10 so that when the bottom and two side walls and front are f lded along the dotted lines a holder such as 11 (see Figs.
1 and 2) will be produced.
This holder may be of a size to receive and hold either a box of matches or a number of loose matches. To provide means for hanging the appliance it is suggested that the back 6 include an opening 12 in its upper part so that a screw 13 may be used to fix the holder to any desirable place in the motor vehicle such as the instrument board or the upright standards of the top. The lower part of the back is preferably cut so as to leave a relatively long extension 14 which may be bent to form a hook 15 which can be used for any useful purpose.
It will be noted that the parts of the blank sheet which make the front, bottom and side walls are on the same side of the back, thus enabling a narrow extension 16 to be made into a match scratching surface 17 (see Fig.
1) which will be handy when a match is withdrawn from the holder.
,To hold the folded or bent parts of the blank together to produce the holder I propose to use tongues 18, positioned along the side edge of the side wall 9, and to provide slits 19' along the edge of the back 6 adjacent the narrow extension 16 to receive the tongues so that they may be turned after being inserted.
A suitable cigar or the like clamp 20 may be arranged on the face of the front part 7.
This clamp should include a'curved finger 21 with a thumb press 22' for swinging the finger away from the face of the front so that a cigar may be presented behind the finger and clamped to the front under the influence of the coiled spring 23 which is incorporated in the mounting for the clamp. The mounting preferably comprises a pair of outwardly projecting ears 24: which are struck from the thickness of the front 7 and with openings in the ears to receive a pintlewhich also passes through the eyes of the ears 25 formed on the side edges of the clamp between the thumb press 22 and the finger 21. This makes a pivoted mounting for the clamp with the small coiled spring normally holding the finger against the face of the front.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have produced a device which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, compact in the arrangement of its parts, ornamental in appearance and highly serviceable.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, 305 size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my lnventlon, I no plaim:-
1. device of class described comprising, a match holder having a back with means for hanging the device from a supporting structure, a'match scratching sur face along one side of the holder, a clamping device mounted to the front of the'holder' and a hook at the bottom of the device, said holder, match scratching surface. and hook being formed from a single piece of light sheet metal with ears struck from the thickness of the face of the holder to provide a pivoted mounting for the clamping device substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising, a match holder having a back with means forhanging the device from a sup porting structure, a match scratching surface along one side of the holder and a clamping. device mounted to the front of the holder, said clamping device comprising,. a curved finger having a @thumb press at its lower end and a pivoted mounting for the finger including spring tension means for normally holding the finger in contact with the front of th holder substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described compris ing, a match holder having a back with means for hanging thedevice from a supporting structure, a match scratching surface along one side of the holder and a clamping device mounted to the front of the holder, said clamping device comprising, a curved finger having athumb pressat its lower end and a pivoted mounting for the finger including spring tension means for normally holding the finger in contact with the front of the holder, and a hook at the bottom of the device. w l I i. A device of the class described comprising, a match holder having a back with means for hanging the device from asupporting structure, a match scratching'surface along one side of the holder and a clamping device mounted to the front of the holder, said clamping device comprising, a
curved finger having a thumb press at its lower end and a pivoted mounting for the finger including spring tension means for normally holding the finger in contact with the front of the holder, and a hook at the bottom of the device, said holder, match scratching surface and hook being formed from a single piece of light sheet metal with ears struck from the thickness of the face of the holder to provide a pivoted "mounting for the clamping device substantially as described. v
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
