Be it known that I, ERWIN F. SIrTnorH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coaling-Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coaling devices for locomotives,'the principal object of the invention being to provide means for supplying the tender of the locomotive with coal as the locomotive moves under the coaling device and without necessitating the stopping of the locomotive. i
Another object of the invention is-to provide a plurality of coal receiving drums normally in communication with the coal hopper so as to be filled with coal therefrom, with means for partially rotating the drums when the locomotivepasses'under the same to cause the coal therein to drop into the tender and at the same time out oif the feed of the coal from the hopper to the drum.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a trip device on the locomotive or its tender for actuating the drums" with means for holding said trip device in inactive position when desired.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and -in the combination and'arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter'fully described, il-

A triangular frame 2 adjacent each chute and one end of said lever is connected with the board 8 bythe spring 11 so that when the; other lever 10 is pivoted to the end of said lever is struck and the lever caused to swing downwardly upon its pivot tension will be placed upon the spring so that the board 8 will be moved downwardly to rotate the drum and bring its opening into discharging position.

gage a lug 20 on frame 15 to supportsaid member in horizontal position. The-roller 21 is carried atthe forward end of the'niember 17 Arms 22 have their forward ends bentand pivoted to the side edges of member 17 by the pivot pin 23 and said arms'are connected to a handle member 241 at'their rear. This handle member is provided with i an extension 25 which engages a curved guideway 26 on the top of the tender, the ends of the guideway being provided with recesses 27 for receiving the enlarged end of the extension 25- to lock the parts'against movement at each end .of the guideway.
It will be seen from Figures 6, 7 and 8 that when the trip is to be moved into operative'position to actuate the trip levers 10 the handle member 24. is moved to the rearward or outer end of the guideway so as to move the roller, to the position shown in said figures, where it will engage the levers to open the chutes and thusdeliver the coal from the chutes to the tender.
If it is not desired to take on a fresh supply of coal the handle member 24 is swung to the opposite end of the guideway and this movement will swing the frame inwardly against the side or" the tender and at the same, time will swing the roller carrying member 17 upon its pivot so that said parts will not engage the levers 10 and will be prevented from striking objects along the track.
The coal in the drum will pass through the opening and pass down the board 8 into the tender; As soon as the tender passes from under the drum and the lever 10 is released from the roller the weight 9 will return the drum to normal position so that it'will be filled again with coal which passes into'the same, from the chute and hopper, As the locomotive passes along the roller will engage the next tripping lever so that the coal in the next drum will be discharged into the tender. Thus the tender will be filled with coal without stopping the locomotive.
I prefer to make the roller 21 adjustable in the member 17 by forming curved slots 17" in said member 17 for receiving the pintles of the roller, The slots are so formed I as to provide three bearings for the pintles so that the roller can be placed; in any one of three positions. By adjusting the roller the discharge. of coal from the'chutes can be so controlled as to place the coal in dif-. ferent parts of the tender.
I may also provide, cables 11 for connecting the boards with the levers 10 so as to relieve thesprings 11 of the load after theparts have started to move to discharging position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent. '1} desire, it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall'wi-th in the "scope of the appended claims.
What I'claim is r- 1. An apparatus. of the class described comprising a framework located adjacent atrack, a hopper supported by the framework, a chute depending from the hopper, a rotatable drum mounted at the end of the chute and having an opening therein, weighted means for normally positioning the drum with the said opening in register with the chute, a deflecting plate connected with the drum adjacent the openings, a tripping lever, means for connecting the lever with the plate and a tripping device for engaging said lever to cause the same to rotate the drum into discharging posit-ion.
2. A coaling device comprising a hopper, a rotatable drum normally positioned to receive the discharge of the hopper and hav-. ing a delivery portion, a trip lever for rotating the said drum into a delivery position, said trip lever having one end disposed to lie in the path of a movin coal-car or other vehicle, and a tensionab" e connection be-v tween the other end of the said lever and the said. drum.
3. A coaling device comprising a plurality of aligned hoppers having discharge chutes, a trip operated discharge mechanlsm associated with each chute and including respectively, a weighted drum normally positioned with its. receiving opening in line with the chute, a pivoted lever and a tension spring connection between one end of the lever and the said drum, and a vehicle-carried trip arm constrained to move in a path coins-i1 dent with the aligned hoppers and having engagement with the levers for successively pivoting the latter to tension the springs for rotating the'said drums into discharging position.
4. A coal device, for coaling locomotive tenders including a hopper, a delivery element for receiving the discharge of the said hopper, means for normally maintaining the delivery element in a non-delivering posit-ion and including a pivotedlever, lever-actuat ing means associated with the tender and comprising a vertical frame pivoted thereto for swinging movement in a horizontal plane, a horizontally disposed arm mounted upon said frame having'its outer end presenting lever-engaging means, a handle at the inner end of the arm, an arcuate track mounted on the "tender, and an extension carried by the. said handle and constrained to move along the said track. 7
