Runway roe GLASS.
Application filed June 19, 1920. Serlal No. 350,244.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Homer: H. BUGGIE, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas dows of automobiles or other vehicles, which.
commonly employ a vertically slidable glass plate.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a runway for a sliding window lass, which runway is formed of a strip 0t material that is yielding so as to readily conform to any irregularities in the thickness of the glass, yet possesses sufiicient firmness to provide a proper runway for the glass. I
find that back check piano felt having a channel formed therein either during initial process of manufacture or subsequently cut therein is highly advantageous for this purpose, and have hence illustrated the invention as employing such strip. The prevention of rattling of a sliding vehicle window glass in any of its positions 9f adjustment is a further object of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an interior view of a vehicle door having a sliding window of the type to which the invention is applicable;
Figure 2 is a sectional detail view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing in cross section, the engagement of the glass with the runway;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the runway engaged by the glass.
In these views, the reference character A designates a vehicle door provided in its upper portion with a window opening B,
which opening is fitted with a vertically slidable glass plate C. Said plate engages at its lateral edges in channels l). which are formed in the window frame portion E of the door A. Within each of the channels D,
there is disposed a runway F, which may be advantageously formed of a rectangular strip of felt, although like yieldable material could be employed. 1 have found that, for this purpose, a very desirable material is back check piano felt, having formed therein either during the initial manufacture of the strip, or by subsequent cutting or machining process, a groove G wherein the lateral edges of the glass C may engage. By so forming the groove in the strip F, none of the initial stifiness of the fibre is lost. A strip formed in the described manner is found highly advantageous, as compared with a strip which is folded to a channel form, one of its desirable effects be-- ing the establishment of a water proof seal between the glass and its frame. It will be observed that the thickness of material provided at the bottom of the groove G is somewhat greater than that at each side of said groove, as this increases the firmness of the channel and assists in maintaining its shape.
It is found that an increased durability results from use of a runway formed as above described and that any binding tendency between the runway and glass is substantially eliminated; Also the employment of the described runway facilitates assembly, since no bending of the same is necessary prior to insertion thereof, in the channels D, so that it may be very readily introduced into the channels without manipulation.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A window runway comprising a strip of fibrous yieldable material, having a longitudinal channel therein-for receiving the edge of a window glass, said channel being formed in the strip.,
2. A window runway comprising a strip of back-check-piano felt. having a longitudinal channel therein for receiving the edge of a window glass, said channel being formed in the strip.
3. A window runway comprising a strip of fibrous yieldable material having a longitudinal channel therein for receiving the edge of a window glass, the thickness of said material at the bottom of said channel'being greater than that at the sides of the channel, said channel being formed in the strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my si ature.
HORACE H. BUPrIE.
