To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O, Tuoxnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the county of Renoand State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inlTone Regulators, of which"the following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonograph at tachments and more particularly toanovel' andimproved means for'modifyingor regulating the volume of tone without the necessity of using different kinds of needles; I
The primary object of the invention is the construction of a tone regulating or modifying attachment for phonographs', wherein pressure may be exerted on the needle to a practically" anytype of sound box'and one in which the parts are extremely simple in construction, easilyassembled, rigid-and durable, highly efficient in operation, practical. and capable of being manufactured at a very low cost, whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration ofthe following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing in the drawing, but maybe changed and modi fied so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

The sound box 5 is provided with'dia metrically opposed ears 8, 9, onits outer periphery, which rotatably supports the transversely extending rod 10 journalledfor rocking movement therein. In'order to effect a sensitive vari ation in the tone and avoid undue vibra tions, I have provided a felt or cork con-- tacting surface 18 positioned beneath the humped or bent portion 16 of the rod, whereby when pressure is produced on the stylus I the metal of the bentportion will be prevent ed from vibratingwith the stylus arm 7.
By reason of this construction it will'locv readily seenlthat as the rod 10 is rocked to effect the various pressures on the stylus arm 7, due to the varying vibrations resulting a different tone may be produced'and that the same may be effected while the machine is playing and of course, without the necessity of changing the needle. The springs 14 and 15, of course, tend to keep the rod, above referred to, out of contact with the inwardly bent portion of the stylus arm and this posi tion will permit the needle to produce the loudest tone However, as the rod lO is rocked and moved to the various positions to be held by the teeth 10, it will be seen that different pressures are exerted onthe stylus arm and of course the greater the resistance the weaker the tones will be produced.
The device is such that the extreme simplicity thereof permits the same to be easily attached to practically any type of sound box without injury to the same, nor would the diaphragm 6 be in any way affected by season-of the attachment. Furthermore the device does not in any way otherwise affect the tone of the sound box when the device is not in use and thus the attachment'is highly efiicient in operation when various tones are desired to obtain the best result in playing selections wherein the volume of tone must be regulated in order to bring out tice has been found to be invention is not necessarily limited or re-.

Having thus described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a sound box, a diaphragm and stylus carrying member, of diametrically opposed attaching members formed onthe outer periphery of the sound box, teeth formed on one of said attaching members, a transversely extending rod having a bent end adjustable on said'teeth and resilient means secured on said rod whereby the contacting pressure with the stylus carrying member may be varied to regulate the volume. of tone,
2. The combination with a sound box, a diaphragm and stylus carrying member, of a transversely extending rod operatively sup ported on the sound box, said rod having an intermediate bent portion for contacting pressure engagement with the stylus carrying member and means for retaining said rod in various positions whereby the pressure between the bent portion of the rod andthe ume of tone to be modified.
3. The combination with a sound box, a diaphragm and stylus carrying member, of a transversely extending rod on the sound stvlus'carrying, member will permit the volbox, said rod havingan intermediate bent 1 portion for contacting pressure engagement with the stylus carrying member and aretaining arm on one end of said rod for adjustably securing the same in various positionsywhereby the volume of tone may be regulated.
l. The combination with a sound box, a diaphragm and stylus carrying member, of attaching members formed on the sound box, a transversely extending rod operatively supported by said attaching members, resilient means secured to said attaching members and to the said rod for retaining the same out of engagement with the stylus carrying member, a bent arm formed on said rod for rocking the same. said rod having an intermediate bent portion disposed between the resilient members for contacting engagement with the stylus carrying arm.
