H. A. CLIFFORD NAIL FULLER Filed June 7, 1920 EA, 471mm mom/11oz HAnLoN A. CLIFFORD, or GRE'ENZEIELD, AssAoHUsE'r'rs, .AssIGNon To CLIFFORD, F GREENEIELD', MASSACHUSETTS.
' NAI FUL R.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARLON A. CLIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Nail Puller, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to nail pullers, and has for an Object the provisionv of means for readily drawing a nail from a structure by employing an ordinary claw hammer; or when the nail is a relatively large one by employing a bar or a similar device in connection with the device;
vide a nail puller of generally improved construction, whereby, the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, 'practical,efficient and serviceable in its use. i
' \Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionresides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter'described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment" of the invention shown can be made withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
accompanydevice; 1 I
Figure 3 is a'nedge' view of'the device per se. v i
Referring to the drawings, there are shown opposed body members 1 "and 2 which are pivotally united by means of a rivet or other securing device 3. The body member 2 has gripping jaw 1 extending from one a terminal thereof, and, a fulcrum member or foot 5 cxtendsfrom the opposed terminal of the body member 2. The outer or operative face 6 of the-foot member 5 is shaped to define a compound curve, the curves of the least radii being. disposed adjacent the claw 4: and the curves of the greatest radii being positioned away from the claw 4. j
v The body member 1 has a claw 7 which is adapted to coact with the claw 4 to grip the Another object of the invention is "a; pro;-

of a conventional nail N, and this body nam 'i member has opposed recesses Sfornied in its claw 7. An arm"9 extends from the body member 1, and the upper face ofthe arm lateral faces at a point removed from the p 9 coincides with the lower walls 10 of the recesses 8.
In use, the device is'so positioned that the opposed jaws 4 and 7 engage the headof the nail N, and then the upper end of the body member 1 is struck with a hammer which drives the points of the jaws4' and 7- under the head of the nail thereby sehammer is placed in the recess 8, and the curely gripping it. Now the claw :of the] convexed portion of, the claw, engages the upper face :of the arm 9. In this position the hammer handle is. gripped and moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, which action causes the jaws 4: and 7 to securely hold the head of the nail, and continued movement inthis direction with-.
draws the nail N from the material M. During the initial movement the device will be fulcrumedon the foot 5.at a point adjacent the jaws 4 and 7, but as the nail is withdrawn from the material the'fulcrum point is shifted to points remote from the jaws and allows the nail to be. drawn entirely from the material M. 1 Y The invention has been illustrated in its v V q The arm 9 is made relatively long so that hammers of various shaped claws may be; I
successfully employed in connection with the device, and the long arm 9 also increases the leverage of the device.
\Vhen very large nails areto be pulledx the hammer is removed and a claw-bar C 'ora heavy rod is positioned in recesses8 vides means for pulling relatively large nails which could not be safely drawn with the v .100, Having thus described my invention what usual claw hammer.
is claimed is; I I
A "nail puller including opposed body members which are pivotally united, oneof the body members having opposed recesses 1 formed therein, a relatively long arm extending from the body member and posi cides withthe inner end walls of the recesses, a gripping jaw extending from the body tioned so that onev longitudinal: face coin- I I member, the opposed body member having and the said material being located beneath a gripping jaw and a fulcrum foot, the the said'ar n.
