To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn W'. Norris, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billings, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Film-Guiding Device, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. film holding and guiding device and more particularly to a device of this character especially designed for facilitating the lining up of one film strip with another film strip when film strips are to be spliced, to insure against misframing of the pictures, when the same are projected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device to be moved over a film strip, the device having markings thereon, to align with the lower edges of the pictures 0 of the film strip, so that when the device 1s moved over the film strip and over the fadeout portion thereof, the markings Wlll indicate where the strip to be spliced should be positioned to cause the pictures thereof to frame when passed through the pro ectlng machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character includmg teeth adapted to move in the perforatlons at the edges of a moving picture film strip to insure against lateral movement of the film strip while being positioned preparatory to the splicing thereof.
With the foregoing and other ob ects 1n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the corn bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood 4 that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the device includes a pair of arms 5 and 6 respectively, which arms are pivotally con- 85 nected through the medium of the apertured ears '7 forming a part of the armo, and the pivot pin 8, forming a part of the arm 6.
This arm 6 has an angularly disposed handle portion, and a relatively straight jaw section 9 which cooperates with the jaw section 10 to support the rollers 11 and 12, there being provided a coiled spring 13 having connection with each of the jaws, for normally urging the jaws towards each other to cause the rollers 11 and 12 to closely engage each other, with the result that the film passing between the rollers is pressed into close engagement therewith.
A shaft indicated at 1 1 forms a partof each of the jaws 9 and 10, and on these shafts are mounted the rollers 11 and 12, securing nuts 15 being provided to secure the rollers 11 and 12 against displacement longitudinally of the shafts 1 1, when the device is in operation.
The roller 11 includes a central hub and enlarged end portions 16, which end portions include circumferential flanges 17 between which the film under operation moves, the distance between the flanges being equal to the width of the film to insure against a film moving laterally from the rollers.
Formed on each of the enlargements 16 are a plurality of teeth or pins 18 which teeth are designed to operate in the openings formed laterally of a film, so that when the device is moved over the film the roller will revolve over the film strip. The cooperating roller .12 is relatively small, as compared with the roller 11, and is provided with circumferential grooves 19 adjacent the ends thereof, which grooves accommodate the pins 18, permitting the pins to pass through the openings of the film.
Adjacent each end of the roller 12 is a disk 20 which disks operate over the surfaces of the enlarged portions 16 of the roller 11, and press the film into engagement with the enlarged portions 16.
In splicing moving picture film, it is absolutely necessary that the pictures of the film register in order that they will be properly framed when passed through a moving picture machine, and to this end markings, 21 are provided at predetermined points on the roller 11, the distance between the markings representing the distance between the upper and lower edges of a picture. In the use of the device, if it is desired to splice a film strip to the fade-out end of another the film strip to be spliced, is brought into alignment with the marking 01 roller 11 which now falls adjacent to the fade-out end of the film strip.
WVith the strips in this position, they may be secured together in the usual and well known manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is '1. In a device of the character described, a pair of plvotally connected arms, said arms including handle portions, a roller carried at one end of each arm, said rollers adapted to cooperate to clamp a film therebetween, one of said rollers having teeth to engage within openings of a moving picture iilm, and means for normally urging the rollers towards each other.
In a device oi. the character described, a pair of pivotally connected arms, each of said arms including a jaw, a shaft forming a part of each aw, a roller rotatably mounted on the shaft, one of said rollers having an enlargement at each end thereof, a flange forming a part of each enlargement, the opposite roller operating between the flanges for forcing a film into engagement with the enlargement, and means for normally urging the rollers towards each other.
