Be it known that ll, Ln GRAND PARISH, :l citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain View, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locomotive-Fire-Box Structures, of which the fol lowing is a specification,
'llhis invention relates to locomotive fire box structures and particularly to an improved arrangement of circulation of arch tubes therefor. v
@ne of the primary objects of my invention resides in ,the provision of an improved structure whereby the circulation, and consequently the eiliciency of the boiler, are greatly increased, while at the same time accesslbility to the tlues and staybolts for purposes of repair or inspection is retained.
2o Another object ofthe invention resides in the intermix the provision of anv improved construction of the character specified in which the .ends of the tubes themselves are'readily accessible and by which the improvement is made readily applicable to locomotive fire boxes of the shallow type.
My invention also contemplates an imroved arrangement of the characterspeciged which does not `detract from the Hexibility of the boiler structure for contraction and expansion, and by means of which various forms of refractory arches may be employed which are adapted to thoroughly gases, thus promoting combustion. ,j
The foregoing together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, li obtain 'by means of a construction which ll have illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawin wherein:

Referring now particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the fire box comprises the inside and outside throat sheets 7 and 8; inside and outside side sheets 9 and 10; inside and outside back sheets 11 and 12; a crown sheet 13; a top sheet la; and a Hue sheet 15 the 1919. Serial No. 301,736.

lin carrying out my invention ll provide arow A of circulation tubes 17, tour in number, which extend rearwardly and upI wardly preferably connecting the front water leg with the rear water leg, the tubes being expanded in the throat sheet 7 and the inside back sheet 1l, and preferably having a bend intermediate their ends. Above the row A. of circulation tubes, ll provide a second row B having the same number ot tubes extending in substantially the same vertical planes as the tubes of the first row and connecting front and rear water legs. At the front ends, the tubes of the row B are connected to the inside throat sheet 7 in approximately the same plane as the tubes of the lower row, this being accomplished by bending the ends of the upper tubes laterally and downwardly, as indicated at 18. The rearn ends of the outer pair of tubes of the upper row are also bent inwardly to permit of connecting the same to the inside back sheet.
llt will be seen that .the increase in the number of tubes will increase the circulation through the boiler, while at the same time the flexibility of the fire box structure for expansion and contraction is not impaired, the tubes are readily accessible for cleaning, the arrangement can be applied to shallow hre boxes, allowing use of a double arch in such structures without bringing the tubes too lowat the front of the box and ready access can be had to the lues.
Furthermore, the arrangement is such that it accommodates itself tol support various forms of arches adapted to secure intimate admixture of the gases. lin the exemplication shown in the drawings there is an arch C. comprised of three rows of arch bricks 20 supported on the upper row of tubes ;v and two side arches, each consisting of a row of wing bricks 21 supported from side sheets and anouter tube of the lower row, and of la row of bricks 22 each supported on an outer pair of tubes of such lower row. rllhis arrangement of the arches leaves open space, as result of which the gases will follow a more or less'tortuous path in which they are thoroughly intermingled. The two rows A and B of circulation tubes are spaced sufciently far apart to permit of the 'fr introduction of the arch bricks for `initie installation or for repair. Y -f Mtl ' (see Fig. t)
ln order to support the larch bricks from the inside, throat sheet 7,-li provide special bricks D` (see Figs. l., 2'and t). ln the bottom face of .such bricks, l lprovide asocket or' groove 23 adapted to ht the circulation tubes of the lower row; and the bricks are tapered from the iront to the rear, there being rovided at the rear upper portion thereof a notch 2tadapted to receive the ends of the bricks ont the forward course of the archC. lnorder to accommodate the special bricks B to the type4 of rcversible arch bricks shown in the drawings,

A locomotive boiler fire box construction comprising in combination, a* front water leg, a rear water leg, eight arch tubes connecting said water legs and arranged in pairs with the tubes of each pair located one above the other in a substantially vertical plane, said tubes being vconnected to a sheet of the forward yw'ater leg in substanwith -spaces between said arch and the sides of the tire box, a plurality ,of bricks spanning the spaces between' the sides of the box .and the outer lower tubes, and a pluralit lse . ln testlmony whereof, l have hereunto' signedv my naine.
