E. KROUTL HOLDER FOR cRA IoNs on THE LIKE File d Aug. .25 1921 Federated ay 22, i923.
EMIL KROUTL, OF BUDWEIS, CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
HOLDER FOR GRAYONS OR THE LIKE.
Application filed August 2 5, 1921. Serial No. estate.
I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL KnoUTL, a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia,.residing at Budweis, Czechoslovakia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Crayons or the like 1 (for which I have filed applications in Austria Jan. 19, 1915, and in Germany Sept. 30, 1921, and in Yugoslavia Oct. 8, 1921, and in France Oct. 12, 1921, and in Great Britain Oct. 15, 1921), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for adjustable crayons or the like, which is of very simple construction, and very simple and efficient in use.
The drawing shows by way of example one mode of carrying out the present invention.
Fig. 1 illustrates the holder in side-view, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 41 of Fig. 2.
The holder comprises a casing or inner sleeve 6, on which an outer sliding sleeve in is adjustably located. A removable guide or sleeve 6 for the adjustable crayon is attached in any suitable manner to the forward end of the inner sleeve 6, and the latter is provided with a longitudinal slot f extending from near its forward end to its rear end. A flat toothed rod or rack a is arranged within the inner sleeve 6, the forward end of the said rod terminating in a rod of small and round cross-section, against which the rear end of the adjustable crayon inserted in the guide 6 rests. The rod a has pins 11 which slide in suitable grooves g to guide its movement. A spring-like catch 9 is fixed on the sleeve 0, its inwardly turned forward end is adapted to engage with the teeth of the rod a, whilst a second catch 7' is attached to the outer sleeve h. The catch j has an inwardly turned forward end engages with one of the teeth of the rod a when the sleeve h is slid forward, whereby the toothed rod and hence the crayon in the holder will be moved forward. The catch 9 engaging with the toothed rod a will hold the latter in the forwardly moved position, if the sleeve 71. is again pushed rearwards.
h ck dm ve eni r th 'to hd rod a and the disengagement of the catches,
g and j, for pushing the crayon into the holder when the pencil isoutof use, may be effected in any desired manner.
In the illustrated embodiment one endof a spiral spring 0 located in the sleeve ,6
is connected to the rear end of the togthegl rod a, the other end of the said spring being,
secured to a knob (Z inserted into the rear end of the sleeve. e. This knob is provided with a pin 6Z1, which extends through t fi slot f of the sleeve 6 and works in alstepped recess i of the outer sleeve 72.. Owing to this.
arrangement, when sliding the sleeve 7,2, and the, toothed rod a forwardly, the spring 0 is placed in tension, so that the pin Z is moved to the rear end ofthe recess i, sothat by a rotation of the sleeve h on the sleeve 6 i the catches g and j may be brought out of engagement with the teeth of the rod a and the latter will be pulled backwards by the action of the spring 0, thereby also drawing the crayon into the holder.
However the invention is not limitedto the illustrated construction of the holder, as the same may be made in other suitable ways without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance the spiral spring may be dispensed with and after the disengagement of the catches from the teeth of the rod, the crayon may be pushed inwardly by means of exerting a pressure against the rear end of the knob. The catches may be disengaged by a spring gripping the same from underneath. In this case also the rotation of the outer sleeve on the inner sleeve may be dispensed with, in order to move the toothed rod backwardly.
The outside of the holder may be wrapped with a cover of any desired colour or may be provided with any convenient design.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A holder for an. adjustable crayon or the like, comprising in combination an inner sleeve provided with a longitudinal slot, an outer sleeve slidably located round the said inner sleeve, a toothed rod slidably arranged within the inner sleeve, the adjustable crayon being adapted to rest against the forward end of said toothed rod, a spring catch on the inner sleeve and a second spring catch on the outer sleeve adapted to engage the teeth of the toothed rod, and
means on the holder for placing the catches out of engagement with the teeth of the rod, in order to move the latter and thereby also the adjustable crayon into their rear positions.
2. A holder for an adjustable crayon or the like, comprising in combination an inner sleeve provided with a longitudinal slot, an outer sleeve slidably located round the said inner sleeve, a toothed rod slidably arranged within the inner sleeve, the forward end of the toothed rod being reduced in cross-section and the adjustable crayon being adapted to rest against the said reduced forward end, a spring catch on the inner sleeve and a second spring catch on the outer sleeve adapted to engage the teeth of the toothed rod, and a spiral spring located in the inner sleeve one end of which is connected to the rear end of the toothed rod, the said spring being placed in tension when pushingthe toothed rod and thus also the adjustable crayon forward, and after the disengagement of the catches from the teeth of the said rod the said spring will pull the rod backwards in order to draw the adjustable crayon into the pencil.
3. A holder for an adjustable crayon or the like, comprising in combination an inner sleeve provided with a longitudinal slot, an outer sleeve slidably located round the said inner sleeve, a toothed rod slidably arranged within the inner sleeve, the forward end of the toothed rod being reduced in cross-section and the adjustable crayon being adapted to rest against the said reduced forward end, a spring catch on the inner sleeve and a second spring catch on the outer sleeve adapted to engage the teeth of the toothed rod, a spiral spring located in the inner sleeve one end of which is connected to the rear end of the toothed rod, whilst its other end is secured to a knob inserted into the rear end of the said inner sleeve, the said knob being furnished with a pin extending through a recess in the outer sleeve, whereby when rotating the outer' sleeve with respect to the inner sleeve the toothed rod is disengaged from the hold of the catches.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
