Be it known that I, Gnonen E. GUNTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at tit. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal- Combustion Engines, of, which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to internal combustion engines, and an object is to provide a construction in devices of this kind whereby the various parts of the engine may be readily removed for cleaning and repair.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connectionwith the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the application of my invention in one form,-

Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view in vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, 10 designates an engine casing within which is a water-jacket space 12 and a cylinder 14 provided with a piston 16. A connecting rod 18 extends into the hollow end of the piston and is pivoted within the same in the usual manner. This connecting rod serves to drive a crank shaft 20 mounted in bearings 22 and 24 with which the casing is provided. A fiy-wheel 26 is secured to one end of the crank shaft and a spiral gear 28 is secured to the other end thereof by a key 30. The spiral gear 28 meshes with a spiral gear 32 secured to a shaft 34 which is mounted in bearings 36 and 38 on the casing. The shaft 34 is e-X- tended by means of a tongue and groove coupling 40 in the form of a cam shaft 42 which is mounted in bearings 44 and 46, supported by a head member 48. The bearing 44 is shown integral with the head memher while the bearing 46 is removable from the head member together with the cam shaft which has the cams 50 and 52 thereon.
The end of the cam shaft is reduced and screw-threaded at 53 for attachment to the customary magneto. The cams operate rocker-arms 54 and 56 which are mounted on I a rod 58, the latter being held in place by a flange 59 on the bearing member 46, and the latter being secured to the head member by screws 60 and 62. The rocker-arm 56 has one end en a ed by the cam 52 and the other engages the valm-stem 64.0f a valve 66 which controls the exhaust port 68 which is connected by a passageway 69 to an exhaust pipe which is adapted to be secured to the screw-threads '70. The valve 66 is normally held closed by a spring 72 in the,
usual manner. The head member is provided with a screw-plug 74 which permits access to the valve 66 which may be removed upon removal of this plug. 54 has one end engaged by the cam 50 and the other end engages the valve stem 76 of a valve 7 8 which controls the inlet port 80 having a passageway 81 connected to a pipe leading from the carburetter, said pipe being adapted to be secured to the screw threads 82. The valve 7 8 is normally held closed by a spring 84. The head member is provided with a sparleplug 86 opposite the inlet valve 78 and an opening 88 leads intothe. combustion end of the cylinder. The head member is secured to the casing 10 by four bolts 90 passing through holes 92 in the head member and screw-threaded into the casing. By unscrewing these four bolts, the head member can be detached to permit access to the cylinder. By removing the two screws 60 and 62, the bearing 46 and the cam shaft 42 can be removed from the head member. The rod 58 may also be removed from the head member at this time, since it is no longer held in place by the flange 59 on the bearing 46. By removing a cap 94 secured in place by two screw bolts 96, the springs 72 and 84 and the rocker-arms 54 and 56 can be reached. The water-jacket space 12 can be made of any suitable size and as shown. is enlarged at the top and at the bottom of the cylinder. The top and bottom portions of this jacket are connected by passages 98, 100, and 102, extending through the head member.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The particular mounting of the head member in connection with the removable bearing for the cam shaft and the removable cap 94 permits access to the cylinder and the removal of various parts carried by the head member.

An internal combustion engine comprising a casing, a cylinder Within said casing, a piston Within said cylinder, driving connectons associated with said piston at one end of said cylinder, a shaft driven by said" connections, a head member detachably securedto said casing at the other end of said cylinder whereby access may be had tooutlet valves in said head member, a cam shaft for operating said valves, said cam shaft being mounted in said head member and detachably connected to said first mentioned shaft, rocker-arms interposed between said cam shaft and said valves, a rod upon Which said rocker-arms are mounted, and a bearing for said cam shaft detachably secured to said head member, said bearing having a flange for retaining said rod when the bearing is secured in place. v I I 2'.
