Be it known that I, WiLL'iaM J. MornATr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Antislip Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to an anti-slip device for traction driving wheels.
The chief object of the invention is to pro-- vide means for supplying an anti-slip fluid to a driving wheel of a traction device.
The chief feature of the invention consists in providing a reservoir for an antislip fluid upon the traction device, and for supplying the nozzle or nozzl s adjacent the driving wheels of said device with anti-slip fluid, said reservoir discharging through said nozzles by means of a siphon construction.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a locomotive to which the invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of the locomotive with the invention thereon. Fig. 3 is an enlarged central sectional view of the common siphon construction. Fig. 4*. is an enlarged end view of the nozzle. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the nozzle.
In the drawings 10 indicates a portion of a locomotive which herein is illustrated as of the steam engine type. Said locomotive is provided with the driving Wheels 11 having the tread portions 12 and the flange portions 13. The tread portions 12 roll upon the rails 14. It is to be understood that the driving wheels are fluid driven, since the engine is a steam engine.
Heretot'ore it has usually been the custom to provide the locomotive with a sand box which discharges sand upon the rail before the driving wheel engages the same, or said sand was supplied to the rail approaching face of the wheel, thereby accomplishing the same purpose, to-wit; increasing the "friction between the driving wheel and the rail, which permits the driving wheel to take a better grip upon said rail. The sand box was connected to a source of pressure on the locomotive and said pressure forced the 1922. Serial No. 564,805.
sand through the several conduits to be discharged. A suitable valve in the cab of the locomotive controls said fluid pressure.
The invention consists in providing a reservoir 15 which has a filling opening 16 provided with a vented cap and a drain 17. The standard cab sander valve controlled line 18 terminates in a fitting 19 which is associated with the reservoir. A tube 20 is connected at one end to the fitting 19 and extends into the reservoir 15 and terminates near the bottom thereof. The fitting 19 is substantially a cross (X) which receives the pipe 18 in one opening and the pipe 20 in the opposite opening. The other two open ings are opposite each other and each is provided with a. reduction member 21. Positioned within the member 19 is guard member 22 substantially T-shapcd. The fluid pressure admitted through the pipe 19 impinges upon the guard 22 and is deflected into the reduction member 21. Discharge through the reduction member 21 creates suction upon the pipe 20, thereby siphoning fluid contained within the tank 15 the from. Each of the reduction members 21 discharges into a transversely extending line 23. which terminates in a discharge nozzle 24. The discharge nozzle 24 is providel with the openings 25 which direct the anti.- slip fluid contained within the reservoir 15 and supplied through the pipe 28 to and upon the tread 12 of: the driving wheel 11.. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5 the nozzle is faced so as to lie substantially tangential to the tread periphery.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described. the combination with a source of fluid pressure, a single fluid reservoir, a plurality of nozzles, anda connection from each nozzle extendingtowards the reservoir, of a unitary siphon construction associating the reservoir with the connections and the source of fluid pressure, including an injector extending into each connection.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a housing having a pressure connection. a supply connection, and a plurality of discharge connections, and deflector means within the housing extending into each of the discharge connections for forming a unitary multiple injector construction.
