implements in the usual way may be avoided.
'A further object is to provide a heating element or elements which may be applied with little change in construction to either a tamping or a smoothing device.
A still further object is to provide a tool which shall include a hollow body having a removable cover, the heating element or elements being mounted in part on the under side of the cover, and the fuel supply devices and handle being detachable, if desired.
A. still further object is to provide, in connection with a hollow body and a burner or plurality of burners mounted therein,-a detachable handle for said body, the handle carrying `fuel and air supply devices, and means being provided for detachably connectingthese devices with the valved ducts leading to the burners.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangementof elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within thescope of the claims, without departing from the spirit ot the invention.
1, discloses a side elevation of they and the loss of time incident to heating the Serial No. 506,703.
at 15 and 16, and the top 18 is formed with. a central transverse opening 19 having communication with the channeled 'portion 20 formed on or carried by the under side of the cover.
socket member 21 carried by the cover receives the end of handle 22, the latter being retained by set screw or thumb screw 23. The cover is detachably retained on the hollow body 1() by threaded elements 24 engaged by nuts 25.
Mounted on the handle is a gasoline tank 26 having a filling opening closed by a plug or cap 28, and a pipe 29 leading from the tank is provided with a valve 30. A union or coupling 3l connects pipe 29 with the threeway connection 38 in communication with valve casing 35, mounted on a ledge 37 on body 10. Needle valves 38 are controlled by valve wheels 39, and the nozzles 40 pass through apertures in the channeled member 20 on the lower side of the cover.
The burner 42, is of the liorm shown, and includes an upper portion, a lower perforated portion, and an upturned end portion 44, located as illustrated with reference to the feed. The upper portions of the burner enter apertures in channeled member 20 at points opposite the nozzles 40, air being supplied through theopening` 19 in the cover` Air enters the body 1() through the openings in the side walls thereof. An air pump 45 is mounted on the handle and connected therewith is a section ofi hose of flexible tubing.
The smoothing tool includes afbody 10 having a bottom 11 the under side of which is curved as shown, the body being elongated, and the socket member 21 being carried directly by the body. The detachable top 18 has an air opening 19 and also an opening 11a closed by a cover 11", permitting access to the burners. The other elements correspond in general, both in function and construction. with those described in connection with the rst form. Similar reference'numbers are employed, the numbers being primed in order to malte the relation clear. A pivoted support 48 holds the handle in proper position when the workman releases it, and when the support is not needed it is held by engaging device 49 secured to the handle.
What I claim is- 1. 1n a device of the class described, a hollow body, a cover therefor, a burner and means vfor mounting the latter within .the hollowbody in position for directing flame into contactwith the upper surface of the bottom of said body, andmeans forpsupply-l ing fuel tothe burner, said hollow body. having arounded bottom, a handle extending laterally from the body, and apivoted foldable member for-supporting the handle in position for maintaining the body substantially level.
2. ln a device of the class described, a hollow body for application to hot asphalt in laying pavements, a cover for said body,
' a socket member carried by the cover, an
opening being provided transversely of the cover and socket member and alfording an air inlet, Va portionv ydepending from the lower side 4of the cover and having atransm -verse channel communicating with the transverse opening, and a burner having an upperv the hollow body, said perforated portionvr eX- tending to a point adjacent to the point of admission ofliquid fuel to the nozzle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatnre.
