FASTENING AND HANDLE,F( JR PAIPER ENVELOPES AND RECEPTACL.
Application filed February 26, 1921. Serial No. 448,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. BUNKER and AsHToN M. Boner, residents of the city of New York, county of New York, and
' State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F astenings and Handles for Paper Envelopes and Receptacles,
of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in fastenings and handles for paper envelopes and receptacles and it consists in a receptacle having a sheet of material glued or otherwise made to adhere thereto, said material having a. slot formed to receive the fingers of the person carrying the receptacle and another slot formed to receive a fastening means. V
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front view.
Figure 2 is a transverse, vertical section, and
Figure 3 is a'detached view of the handle.
A represents the receptacle or envelope, and 1, is the flap for closing the upper edge.
The numeral 2, represents the handle the same being made of a suitable material for the purpose and glued or otherwise secured to the front of the flap.
A slot 3, is formed in the upper portion of the handle to receive the fingers of the person carrying the receptacle and the edges 1, are bent back to reenforce and make smooth and thicken the edges of the slot and the tongue 5, may be entirely removed or bent back out of the way.
Through the lower portion of the handle and the flap a slot 6, is formed and a fastener 7, secured to the front'of the bag, has a tongue 8, which passes through this slot 6, and is adapted to'be bent fiat against the bag when the flap 1, is closed as a means for fastening the same, the fastener 7 being made of some bendable material which will take a set and remain in that position and yet admit of being bent back and forth a great many times without breaking.
In this way a simple means is provided for afiording a handle for arfy form of merchandise bag or receptacle having a flap at the top which is to be closed and in which a handle for carrying same is desirable.
We claim, a
1. The combination with a receptacle and flap, of a. handle made of fiat material secured to the flap and having a slot at the upper end .to receive the fingers of the person carrying the same and a slot through the body of the flap and handle, and a fastening device secured to the receptacle and adapted to enter the slot in the body of the handle and flap and be bent fiat against the receptacle to fasten the flap in its closed position.
2. The combination, with a receptacle and flap, of a handle secured to one. of said parts, said handle having two slots, one for the fingers in carrying the receptacle, and a fastening device secured to one of said parts and its free end adapted to enter the other slot in the handle and be bent back to secure the flap and receptacle together.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures.
' JOHN W. BUNKER.
ASHTGN M. BONEY.
