Application filed December 28, 1922. Serial l lo. 609,523.
' and'useful Improvement in Articulated Cars,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
1 'ex'act description, such as will enable others skiiled in the art-to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this application.
My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in an improved platform or underframe construction for use in articulated cars where two adjacent cars have their ends mounted upon a common truck.
The object of my invention is to form integral projections upon the car end sill or buffer member adapted to extend over a 20 truck extending beyond the end of the car spectively engage the truck center and side bearings.
illustrate a selected embodiment of my invention- Figure l'is a top. view of theend ofa platform casting including my invetion.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same. Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the centers of two adjacent cars and showing the center plate of a common truck upon which the forms are mounted.
Figure 4 is a similar section through one of the side bearings. i
-The casting which is partially shownin Figure 1 is of the usual cast steel type now in use and includes draft sill portions 1, side sill portions 2 and an end sill or buffer portion 3. Cast integrally with the latter portion is a centrally located projection 4 adapted to serve as a platform buffer clement orto have attached thereto a body center plate element 5- which is adapted to nest with a tends downwardly and forwardly and has suitable surfaces 8' facing downwardly and M. PFLAGER, a
In the accompanying drawings which- It will be noted that the projection. 4 ex forwardly which are preferably machined-to fit corresponding faces on the center bearmg. 5.
Spaced'from the center of the-main plat-3 form casting are other integral projections 9,
adapted to fit and to have removably attached therto body side bearings 10 which will be vertically aligned with corresponding truck side bearings.
Both the center bearing and side bearing projections are reinforced by suitable flanges 11 and 12, respectively, and it will be undertsood that the contour of these projections and the details of their bracing from the buffer or end sill 3 may be varied to suit different conditions and different types of trucks upon which the cars are to be mounted.
With this construction whenever a body bearing is-w'orn or damaged, it may be removed and a new one applied but the essential features of integral supporting struc tures for the bearings disclosed in mycopending application Serial Number 609,522, filed Dec. 28, 1922, are retained.
I claim:
1. In a railway car underframe, a member formed integrally upon a. permanent part of the underframe, projecting beyond the end of the car, adapted to receive a renewable bearing element adapted to be sup-.
ported upon'a car truck.
v 2. In a railway car underframe, a projection formed integrally upon the end of the underframeand a bearing element removably secured to said projection and adapted to be supported upon a car truck.
. 3. Av railway car one-piece underframe casting-including an end sill or buffer pro- PATENT OFFICE,
vided with integral projections at the cenj I ter of its outer face and at points thereon 'spaced from the center, and respective body an integral center proj ection on the forward end of said casting, and a removable body center plate secured to said projection and provided with a lower surface adapted to be seated on the center plate of a truck extending beyond the end of the car.
5. In a platform casting for a railway car,
integral spaced projections on the forward end of said casting on opposite sides of the center thereof, and removable body side bear ings adapted to cooperate with the side bearings-of a truck the longitudinal center of which is beyond the front of the platform casting.
6. In a railway car underframe, a member formed integrally upon a permanent part of the-underframe, projecting beyond the end of the car, adapted to receiye a renewable center bearing element adapted to be supported upon a car truck.
7-. In a railway car underframe, a member formed integrally upon a permanent part of the nnderframe, projecting beyond theend of the car, adapted to receive a renewable side bearing element adapted to be supported upon a car truck.
8. In a railway car underfrnme, a member formed integrally upon a permanent part of the underframe, projecting beyond the end of the car, adapted to receive a renewable center bearing element, the last. mentioned being adapted on its lower surface to rest upon a complementary bearing of a car truck and on its upper surface to bear against and support a corresponding element on an adjacent car underframe.
In testimony whereof IdlGIEllIltO affixnnj signature this 5th day of Dec.. 19:22.
H. M. PFLAGER.
