This invention relates to certain improvements in air compressors and has relation more particularly to a device of this general characterT and it is an object ot the invention to provide a novel and improved device ot this general character whereby a. supply of compressed air or other fluid may be readily obtained.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a piston supported for rectilinear. movement within a cylinder or compression chamber and wherein a rotatable member is provided to impart the requisite reciprocation to the piston.
still further object. ot' the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a piston havingrectilinear movement within a cyl inder or compression chamber together with member rotating in onefdirection and provided with means operatively engaged with the piston for imparting the requisite reciprocations thereto, and furthermore wherein said rotatable member is provided at its opposite end portions with reversely directed spirals or threads with which coacts a rock member carried-by the extended portion of the rod tor the piston. the intermediate portion ot the rotatable member constituting a cam for coaction with the opposite end portions ot' the rock member whereby said rock member in proper sequence is caused to have the desired engagement with' the spirals.
The invention consists in the details ot construction and in the combination Iand arrangement of the several parts of my improved compressor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. as will behereinafter more fully set forth.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, l denotes a reservoiror tank and suD- ported by the reservoir or tank R exteriorly thereot is compression chamber or cylinder C in which is arranged torrect rinear movement a .piston 5l. Leading from the tank or reservoir R is a dischargepipe or conduit 10. Opera-tively engaged lwith the piston 5l is the rod 52 extending exteriorly, ot the cylinder' or chamber C through the inner head ot said cylinder. y" The outer or exterior end portion ot the rod ,52 is engaged with a headlj.l AThe, head ,fthas slidinggr movement within a longitudinally disposed slot provided in a table T and which table is operatively supported by the structure A. The slot 55 extends in the same general direction as the direction of travel of the rod 52 and the marginal portions of the table T defining the slot 55 lit within the groove 56 provided in the side faces of the elongated flange or rib 57 depending from the head 54; and extending through the slot55, whereby the head 54 iis supported for reciprocatory movement in a fixed path of travel and whereby the requisite rectilinear movement is imparted 'to the piston 5l.
The inner longitudinal marginal portionof the table T isprovided with a depending wall 58 arcuate in cross section as illustrated in Figure 6.and which wall is provided with an outstanding flange 59 adapted to overlie the upperportion of the structure A and suitably anchored thereto, whereby the table T is maintained in applied position.` The opposite ends of the Vwall 58 are provided with the end plates 60 which serve as bearings for the shaft 6l. The shaft 61 has its opposite end portions extending outwardly of the end plates v60 and the extended portion of said shaft 6l adjacent the cylinder' has tixed thereto a gear 62 meshing with a gear 63 loose on the driving shaft 64 of the motor M and which motor is preferably of an electrical type, although T do not wish to be lunderstood as limiting myself in this respect.
The vgear 63 is vprovided with a clutch face 65 with which coacts the clutch inember 66 mounted upon the shaft 64, The clutch member is adapted for rotation with the'ishaft' 64 but capable of adjustment into or out of locking engagement with the clutch face 65. The requisite operation of the clutch member 66 is under control of the upstandinsirock arm 67 carried by the shaft 66 and which sha-ft 68 is rocked as required through the instrui'nentality of the lever 69. By proper adjustment of the clutch member 66 the shaft 61 may he brought into driven connection with the shaft v64k when required or said shaft 61ypermitted to rotate independently of the shaft 64; when preferred,

The'head 54 is provided in its under surface with a longitudinally disposed recess or groove 72 and arranged within said'groove or recess 72 is a rocking lever 73. The rocking lever 73 is pivotally supported as at 7l midway its length and the opposite ends of said lever 73 are provided with the lugs or feet 75 adapted to ride within the spiral grooves or channels 70 of the member D, one of said lugs or feet 75 being raised or inoperative when the second lug); or foot is in workingl or operative position. The major length of the lever is substantially equal to one-half of the length of the meinber or drum D so that when the head 54 has substantially reached its limit of movement in one direction, the cam 71 will raise one end vportion of the lever 73 and .thereby movethe opposite lug` or foot 75 into working position. This operation is repeated when 'the head 54 substantially reaches its limit'of movement in the opposite direction. In view of the foregoing, it will be readily seen that the desired Areciprocation of the piston 5l is obtained by continuouslrotation ofthe member or drum D in one direction. The outer longitudinal.marginal portion of the'table T is provided therealongfwith a groot/e or channel S5 in which is arranged for endwise sliding movement an elongated bar 86 provided at one end portion with the raclrs 8 7 meshing with-the gears 86 car ried by the spindles 89 of the lower rotary valves 90.
Each of the valves90 is tubular and is arranged wit-hin an enlarged yportion 91 of either the head 33 or head 92 of the cylinder C and one end of said valve 90 is open. The open end portion of the valve 90 extends within the reservoir or tank R and coacting with said inserted or open end is a flat valve 93 which serves to normally maintain said inserted or open end of the valve 90 closed. Each ofthe valves 9() is also yprovided with an elongated slot or port 94 which7 when the valve-90 is in one ,position1 Aregisters with. the port 95 in the adjacent ywall of the cylinder or chamber (y) so that the air as compressed within the cylinder or lchamber C by thevpiston 51 will be delivered within thetank or reservoir R.
ln the present embodiment of my invenf tion, each of the valves ilOconstitutes-a lower Salve and the gear 88 coactinnwith said valve 90 meshes with the'gear'96 carried ,by the stem 97A of an upper rotary valve 98. The elongated member or bar 86 operates to properly adjust the valves 90 and 98 in timed sequence and the requisite movement of the member or bar 86 is transmitted from 'the head 54.
The end portion of thermember or bar 86 remote from the cylinder or chamber C is provided therethrough with the openings 101 in which are mounted vthe idle gears c, and c supported by the side walls of the member 86 defining the openings 101y and which gears a', Z) and c are adapted to coact with the relatively short racks 102 pro-4 duced on the base or bottom of the groove or channel 85 hereinbefore referred to.
Extending outwardly and laterally from the head 54 at substantially its center is a flat extension or plate 103 terminating in an angular portion,Y 104 providing a downwardly facing groove or channel 105 in which the upper portion of the member or bar 86 is received. The base portion of the groove 105 is provided therealong with the rack 106.
Pivotally engaged with the opposite extremities of the angular portion 104 of the extension or plate 103 and having swinging movement toward or from the member or bar 86 are the substantially U-shaped members 107 havingtheir base portions outwardly disposed and the base or intermediate portion 108 of each of the members 107 is provided withl a dependingtooth 109 for a. purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The pivoted end portions of the outer side arms of the members 107 are provided with the depending rock arms 110 with their lower or free end portions connected by the rigid link 111, whereby the members 107 are caused to swing in unison but in reverse directions. The arms 110 are in such angular relation that when one of the members 107 is in lowered or working position, the second member 107 is in a raised or inoperative position.
As illustrated in Figures and 9, the piston 51 together with the head 54 are at the limit of their outward movement and at which time the outer member 107 has been swung downwardly as particularly illustrated in Figure 9 by contact of an end of the link 111 with a depending lug 112 carried by thetable T. 'As the member or drum D rotates, the head 54 will be caused to move toward the cylinder or chamber C with the resultant stroke of the piston 51. The outer lmember 107 when lowered engages the outer gear a which is in mesh with the outer rack will be imparted to the member or bar 86. Just before the member 107 or more particu larly the tooth 109 thereof passes from the gear e, the rack 106 carried by the angular portion 104 of the extension or plate 103 will engagethe gear b.
- At the time the rack 106 engages the gear b, said gear b is in aposition to mesh with the intermediate rack 102 so that as the head 54 continues to travel toward the cylinder or chamber C, the bar or member 86 will be continued to move. When the head 54 is at the limit of its inward movement, the gear c will be in mesh with theinner rack 102 at substantially the same position the gear a occupies in Figure 9 with the gear 5 inwardly of the intermediate rack 102. Just before the head 54 reaches the limit ofits inward movement, the inner end of the link 111 cont-acts with the inner depending lug 112 carried by the table T whereby the inner member 108 is lowered to engage the gear c and the outer member 107 raised into an inoperative position, so that upon the return or outward movement of the head 54, the operation just described will be repeated and the bar or member 86 moved outwardly. The movement of 'the bar or member 86 in either direction is sufficient to cause the racks 87 thereof to rotate the valves 90 and 98 from one position to the other in proper timed sequence.
113 denotes a safety valve of any preferred construction coacting with the reservoir or tank R and which automatically opens when the pressure of the air within the tank or reservoir R passes a predetermined degree.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a compressor constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and `facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim:
1. A device of the character described including a compressor comprising a cylinder, a piston mounted therein for rectilinear movement, a rod engaged with the pistou and extending exteriorly of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended portion of thc rod and travelling in a substantially fixed path of travel, a lever pivotally supported substantially midway its length by the head,
a cylindrical member rotatably supported adjacent the head, said member being provided in its periphery with spiral channels disposed in opposite directions from substantially the center thereof, the 'merging 15 same rotate in unison, Aa piston-arranged Within the Cylinder vfor rectilinear movement7 a rod operativelyV engaged therewith and-extending exteriorly or' the cylinder7 an elongated member supported for endwise movement and provided with a rack meshing with the gear of one of the valves whereby reeiproeation of said member moves the valves from one position to the other, and coaeting means earriedby the rod and the member for imparting the requisite movement to the member.
