RICHARD A. 'oLsoN, or raonwoon, MICHIGAN.
SINGLE-VALVE \UALL REGISTER.
Application filed December 11,1920. Serial No. 429,920;
To all. w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. OLsoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ironwood, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Single- Valve Wall Register; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a hot air distributing register for house heating plants by means of which the amount of heated air discharged-through a'register on a lower floor and that permitted to pass through the flue to an upper floor or floors may be regulated and proportioned to suit drawing, wherein:
Figurel is a front view of a register embodying the invention. I I
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated bythe line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail'sectional view on the 1 plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1. The face plate 10 of the register is provided with an opening fitted with a grat ing 11 consisting of intersecting bars of preferably cross sectionally concavo-convex form as indicated in Figure 2,to afford stiffness or strength to resist transverse strain or pressure, and arranged in coextensive relation with the opening. Covering the grating interiorly is a valve plate 12 provided at its upper edge with terminal rolls 13 for removably and revolubly engaging the concave rear or inner surface of the topmost marginal rib 14 of the grating to constitute a pivotal mounting of said valve plate upon the face plate of the register as indicated in Figure 4. Carried by the valve plate and extending throu h an intermediate (pref erably the centra opening of the face plate is a tongue 16 deflected forwardly from the plane of the valve plate and arranged in bearing contact with the forward or outer convexed faceqoflsaid upper marginal rib 14 of the face plate as shown in Figures 2 and '3, vsaidtongue being resilient and by pressure upon the conveXed surface of the web serving to maintain the rolls 13 of the valve plate in the seats or bearings formed by the concaved rear surface of the head or rib 1'4 while permitting a pivotal or swinging movement of said valve plate, although normally preventing the valve plate from swinging by gravity from an inclined or open position to a vertical or closed .po-'
sition.
The tongue is preferably provided with projecting spurs or shoulders 17 for abutment against flanges or ribs 18-provided on the grating 11 to limit the extent of inward swinging movement of the valve plate 12 so as to permit the desired quantity of heated air rising in the fine to pass through the grating into the room or apartment with which the register communicates, the remaining portion of the heated air'rising throughthe flue being permitted to pass the valve plate and hence rise to and be distributed in a room or apartment on an upper floor of the building.
In order to provide for varying the GX' tent of opening of the valve plate while allowing it to be locked in an adjusted position by the engagement of the spurs 17 with the ribs 18, an adjustable connection is preferably provided between the tongue and the valve plate by an elongated slot 20 in the latter for engagement by screws 2l'extending through the tongue and engaging a washer plate 22 in contact with the rear or innersurface of the valve plate as indicated clearly in Fi ure 3. The slot permits of varying the adjustment of the tonguewith reference to the valve plate merely by loosening the screws and then retightening the same when a proper position of the valve plate has been secured.
At its lower edge the valve platemay also be provided with a forwardly directed flange 23 to be received by the lowermost marginal head 24 of the face plate so as to effect a substantial closing of the opening in the face plate when it is desired to prevent the escape of heated air there'through.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is Y 1. A wall register having a valve plate, means to pivotally mount-said plate, abutment means on said plate to limit inward swinging movement thereof by engagement with the register, means operable to vary the position of said abutment means to vary having a shoulder to abut said register to limit inward swinging movement of said plate, and means on the tongue to resiliently engagethe first mentioned means and maintain the plate in an open position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD A. OLSON.
