Description

Apr. 3, 1923. 1,450,561
v(I. B. PARKER MACHINE FOR FILTERING COMPRESSED AIR Filed Mar. 15-; 1920.
WITNESSES I INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. a, 1923.
p n l T T E S CHARLES BERNICE PARKER, OI NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
MACHINE FOR FILTERING COMPRESSED AIR.
Application filed March 13, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLEs BERNIOE PAnKnn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Filtering Compressed Air, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for filtering compressed air and has for its object the provision of novel means for arresting and disposing of dust, oil, rust or water which may be present in compressed air.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the air, after being freed of impurities, is conducted away from the filter in a manner which will prevent impurities from again gaining access to the said air.
With the foregoing and otherobjects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing illustrating an embodiment of the invention by 'a sectional view.
In this drawing 1 denotes the cylindrical casing of the filter, 2 an inner cylinder and 3 cylindrical cages spaced apart within the inner cylinder.
Apertured cones 4 are supported on the upper ends of the cages and the lower ends of the apertures of some of the cones have air expanders 5 applied to them. Recesses or holes 6 are formed in the cages and gigs may be used for lifting out the cages, the said gigs being in the nature of tongs with oppositely projecting tangs adapted to enter the holes or recesses 6.
Shoulders 9 project from the inner surfaces of the cages and form seats for the copper netting 8 which netting is held over the apertures of the cones, and above the air seats 11 formed in the inner cylinder between the cones and the said netting. Air ports are also formed in the inner cylinder near the upper end of the inside of the casing and ports 12 are formed in the inner cylindernear the lower end of said casing.
Gaskets 13 are applied to the upper and lower ends of the casing and screws 15 are inserted through said gaskets and are preferably threaded in the ends of the casing.
Serial No. 365,645.
A trap or collecting jacket 14 is fastened to the lower end of the casing of the screws 13, and ports 12 allowimpuritiesto pass down into thesaid trap.
A reservoir 16 for wood alcohol is applied externally of the casing and it has a filling cap 17.
The air expanders 5 have ports 18 as air passages between the cones and at the upper end of the inner cylinder a combined netting and flange 19 rests-on the upper cage.
A pressure controlling valve 20 is engaged by a spring 21 which holds it on its seat and the valve is operated by a handle 22. The valve operates in a casing having exhaust ports 23' and 24. The valve casing is also in communication with a dome to be hereinafter described.
An air pipe 25 leads from the reservoir 16 to the dome and pipes 26 and 27 lead from the valve casing to a cylinder 28 which cylinder has spring held pistons 28 therein. Springs 28 absorb shock due to the action of the pistons.
' The port 29 serves as an outlet for wood alcohol into the trap, and the trap has an external bracket 30 with a slot 32 in which a lever 31 is oscillatable.
A valve 33 controls the exit end of the trap and said valve has a stem with a slot 34 in it to receive an end of the lever 31. There is an air passage 35 between the inner cylinder and casing for purpose to be presently explained.
A main air dome 36 is fastened on the upper gasket 13 and the pipe 25 communicates with said dome and with the alcohol reservoir 16. A pipe 36 also leads from the dome to the valve casing 20 to supply air through the valve to the cylinder 28. The dome has an exit pipe 37 which may lead to a brake valve or other elements where the air is to be employed.
The pipe 38 leads from the dome to a governor 39 and a pipe 40 leads from the governor to a cylinder 41. It is supplied to the inner cylinder by a pipe 42 extending through the casing and connected to the lowermost apertured cone so that air passes through the series of cones and netting which netting arrests and deflects foreign matter which is directed by the surfaces of the cones through the ports to the channel 35 and then into the trap from which it escapes through the bottom when the valve 33 is lifted.
Compound packing 43 is inserted above the last cone and its netting to act as a screw for arresting oil or dust and it is preferably made of okum, aluminum machine clippings, sea moss and lead machine clippings. Packing 44 and 45 of like nature to that form described may be inserted between the cones also.
The bracket 46 depends from the inside of the trap and it has a slot 48 to receive a lever 47 actuated by the piston rod 49 of the piston 50 in the cylinder 41. A spring 51 encircles the piston rod and holds the piston normally upward above the ports 52, but When pressure in the cylinder receives the strength of the spring 51 the piston is forced down and the valve 33 is operated.
I claim:
1. An air filter comprising a casing, a
cylinder in and spaced from the casing to form a chamber, said cylinder having ports leading to the said chamber, apertured cones, cages 1n the cylinder for supporting the cones, netting over the cones, means for supplying air to the cones, a collector for foreign substances and means for discharging the foreign substances from the collector.
2. An air filter comprising a casing, a cylinder in and spaced from the casing to form a chamber, said cylinder having ports leading to the said chamber apertured cones, cages in the cylinder for supporting the cones, netting over the cones, means for supplying air to the cones, a collector for foreign substances and means for discharging the foreign substances from the collector,
and packing between the netting and cones.
