J. w. WATSON GLOVE Filed Mar. 15, 1918 I N VE N TOR 75k? Wd/za/z ilk/23501 WITNESS 4 MM BY W A TTORNEYS Patented Mar. 27, 1923.
JOHN WARREN WATSON, F WAYNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GLOVE.
Application filed March 13, I918.
To all whom it malg concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JV. l/VArsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wayne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Glove, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a glove of novel form for the purpose of keeping the hand warm when in its natural bent and working position. This is accomplished by provid' ing a covering for the hand to retain heat. and by so forming the glove as to not interfere with heat supply i. e. circulation of blood in the hand and fingers when the same are in their natural bent and working position. The common practice in gloves and mittens intended to keep the hands warm is to con struct and form them so that they normally lie flat. To grasp anything, therefore, such as an automobile wheel, a hammer handle or any other object designed to be grasped by the hand, requires that the hand and fingers must force the glove out of its normal flat form and into a curved position. This forcing of the glove into this curved position causes pressure against the finger tips which immediately stops or reduces blood circulation. With circulation thus stopped or 30 reduced, the fingers soon become numb and cold and this numbness and cold further stops blood circulation until the entire hand becomes cold. The hand thus becomes cold in spite of the heat retaining qualities of the glove material or glove lining.
It has been found, in automobile mitts, as customarily constructed for the purpose of keeping the hands warm, that the hand soon becomes very cold while forcing the mitt into a curved position to conform to the curved section of the steering wheel, but quickly warms up again if the hand is unbent from the steering wheel and straightened out to conform to the normal or flat form of the mitt. The reason for the hand being cold in one position and warm in the other position is simply because of stoppage of blood circulation in the one case and freedom of blood circulation in the other.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide a glove adapted for the purpose of keeping the hand warm when in its natural bent and working position by minimizing the pressure against the finger tips or against any other part of the hand and, thus per- Serial No. 222,266.
and working position As is made clear by the accompanying drawings, my invention relates to a glove so formed that, in its normal position, it is already curved and'hence requires no pressure from the hand to curve it around the object to be grasped. In a glove thus normally formed, the blood is permitted to maintain its free circulation and thus impart its warmth to the hand while the hand is bent and grasping its object.
Various means may be utilized in constructing a heat-retaining glove so that the same normally assumes such a position as not to require pressure from the hand and fingers to bend or maintain the same in a bent or working position. .Une eflicient construction for this purpose is shown and described herein merely by way of example, it being understood that the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment illustrated as it will be apparent that many modifications thereto may readily be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of my novel form of glove showing the same normally conforming to the natural curved and gripping position of the hand. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the glove removed from the hand where it will be noted that the glove, unaided by the hand, maintains this bent and working position.
One type of glove illustrated herein, which is adapted to normally assume, unaided, a position which will not interfere with proper blood circulation while the hand is in its natural working position, comprises a construction wherein the proportioning of the palm section (1) relative to the back section tends to normally hold the glove in the desired curved position. The palm. section herein is made shorter than the back section. It is obvious, however, that this same normal curvature of the glove could be secured in many other ways, such as, for example, by merely pre-forming the glove into a curved position Moreover, it is evident that the glove or mitt, although held together by a seam or seams, need not be made of the number of pieces disclosed in order to be so shaped as to cause the completed glove to normally assume this curved position and thus minimize the tendency to interfere with the circulationof the blood in the hand when the same is held in its bent or working position.
If desired, the thumbpiece may. also be made to assume, unaided some such curved position as that shown in the present embodiment.
It is understood that the novel form of 15 Havingthus described my invention, I
claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United; States:
1. The combination of a covering for the hand preformed to conform with the natural bent and workingpositionrof the hand; and
a heat retaining lining within said covering. 2;- A covering for the hand, preformed to conform tothe natural bent and workingposition of the hand said covering onthe inside being provided with warmth retaining material of substantially uniform thickness throughout.
In witness whereof, I have hereuntoset.
my hand. this 12th day of March, A. D., 1918.
JOHN WARREN WATSON.
