PATENT OFFICE.
FOREST HOOPER, 0F EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA.
WRENCH.
Application filed January 25, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FOREST HooPER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, have invented an Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its object to provide a wrench which can be used as a pipe wrench without danger of crushing the pipe, and also as a monkey wrench which can be used on finished valves, nuts and the like without marring the nickel or other finish.
The invention also has for its object to provide a wrench of the character described, which can be quickly and positively adjusted to any size pipe or fitting within limits.
Provision is made for closing the jaws of the wrench after they have been adjusted to the pipe and to increase the grip of the jaws as they are closed, and further to prevent the jaws from looking on the pipe when the pressure or tension is removed.
These and other features of this inventionwill be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying this invention, showing the'same in its open position.
v Fig. 2, a like elevation showing the wrench in its closed position on a pipe.
Fig.3, a longitudinal section of the wrench shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, a section on the irregular line 44, Fig. '2, and
Fig. 5, a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings a, 6, represent the two jaws of the wrench and o, d, the shanks thereof.
The jaws a, b, may be designated the upper and lower jaws, and are provided with substantially flat or straight opposing faces 10, 12, which enable the wrench to be used as a monkey wrench, and said faces are provided between their ends with ooncavities or recesses l3, 14, which form with the flat faces 10, 12, two relatively sharp corner teeth 15, 16, on each jaw, and the said recesses may also be provided between said corner teeth with additional teeth as shown. The
crushing the pipe, when pressure is applied to turn the same. The corner teeth 15, 16 are flush with the faces 10, 12 of the jaws and therefore do not interfere with the use of the wrench as a monkey wrench, and do not mar the nickel or other finish on valves, nuts and the like when the wrench is used thereon. j a
The jawsa, b, in the present instance are both movable, and provision is made for quickly obtaining a coarse adjustment of the jaws and also for a finer adjustment of the same. To this end, the shank c of the aw a is inserted into a socket or guideway 21 in a handle 22, and is provided on one face with teeth 23 suitably shaped to be engaged by screw or helically arranged external teeth 24 on a rotatable nut or adjusting member 25 which is mounted to turn on a pivot pin 26 between brackets 27, 28, at-v tached to the handle 22. The pivot pin 26 is extended freely through the bracket Y27 and nut 25 and is in threaded engagement with the bracket 28. The screw teeth 24 of the ad usting nut 25 project into the socket or shank 0 and permits the latter to beslid freely in the guideway or socket 21, thereby enabling the jaws a, b, to be quickly engaged with the pipe 20 or other object to which the wrench is applied.
This engagement of the jaws a, Z), is effected by what may be considered a coarse adjustment of the jaws, and when thus adjusted, a finer adjustment of the outer jaw a may be obtained by turning the nut 25 so as to first engage the teeth 24 on the nut with the teeth 23 on the shank 0, and then on further turning the nut the jaw a is moved toward the jaw b by the screw teeth 24 on the nut, which latter may be provided with a wing or handle 35 to facilitate turning the same.
Provision is also made for adjusting the jaw b with relation tothe jaw a, and to in- Ill) ' I to the pipe 20 or other article,.the adjusting strap or guiding member 36 through which the shank'o of the upper jaw a is extended and which serves to guide the lower jaw in its movement andtQ Oonnect it in operative;
relation with the upper jaw. The movement of the lower jaw Z) on the shank 0 of the upper jaw is effected by an elbow lever pivotally mounted on the handle 22-and pivotally connected with lower jaw 12. The elbow leveriis preferably made as herein shown and handle 22. The elbow shaped members. 40
turn on trunnions or circular projections a2 on the handle 22, see Fig. 4E, and are reta'ined'o'n 'the'hand'le 22 by screws 43. The
short arms of the elbow shaped members r-O arepivotallyeonnected with the lower jaw b by the 'pivot pin or screw 44:.
The back member 41 cooperates with the handle 22 and the latter actsas a stop to limit the-movement of the jaw moving lever 40 and prevents the leverbeing moved beyond the center on which it turns and thereby prevents the jaws a, b becoming locked on the when the pressure on the leveriszremoved;
In: the normal" or open position of the wrench, the lever 40 is turned so that its lon ar'meirtends away from thehandle 22' ass own in Fig. 1, and the bottom ot'the jaw b. bears against the bracket 1281,
WVhen' it" is desired to apply the wrench nut is turned'sothat its flat or untoothed portion 30' opposes the teeth28 on the shank c, and when thus positioned the shank a can be slid in the guideway 21 so as-to bring" the jaw a' substantially into engagement with the work, with'which, the lowerjawh is loosely engaged. The nut 25 is then turnedto engage its teeth 24 with the teeth 23"of the shank c to effect the final adjust ment ofthe upper jaw a., When the parts are thus positioned'on thepipe 20 or' o'ther work, the-operator grasps-the handle 22 and,
lever 40 and exerts pressure on the. latter thereby moving the lower jaw vb into .firm engagement with the pipe 20, and when thus-engaged the pressure of the lower jaw can be gradually increased by pressure applied to thelever 40 which may be efi'ected asthe handle of the wrench is ulled or pressedupon to' turn the pipe. y relieving the pressure from the jaw moving lever a0, the jaws are automatically released from the pipe and the wrench can be turned backward to get a new grip when desired or required.
Agnoted above, the wrench is equally applic'a'ble for use as a monkey'wrench, with out danger of marring the finish on the work. 7 One embodiment of the invention is herein shown, but it is not desired tolimit the invention to the particular construction shown.
