' UNITED STATES THOMAS F. IVIGCAMBBIDGE, AKRON, OHIO.
RIM.
Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No. 360,029.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MoCAM- nmnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rims, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cross-cut or split demountable rims of automobile Wheels and the like and has particular reference to means for securing the abutting ends of the demountable rim together.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an extremely simple and easily manipulated means for securing the ends of demountable rims together.
With the above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a fragment of a split demountable rim showing a means constructed in accordance with the present invention for securing the ends of said rim together, and
Figure 2 is a view substantially in central longitudinal section and in perspective of the device shown in Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the present invention contemplates the provision of a very efficient and durable means for securing the ends 5 and 6 of a cross-cut or split demountable rim together so that they abut at their ends as at 7.
In carrying out the present invention, I rigidly attach an elongated plate 8 t0 the rim end 6 by means of rivets 9 or the like so that the projecting free end 10 of the plate 8 underlies the adjacent end 5 of the rim. The projecting end 10 of the plate 8 is reduced in width and offset laterally as at 11 so as to provide a tongue 12 preferably of rectangular form in plan snugly fitting in a correspondingly shaped opening 13 provided centrally in the rim end 5. This effectively connects the two ends 5 and 6 and retains the same against separation, but in order to insure positively against disconnection of the ends 5 and 6, means are provided for holding the tongue 12 within the opening 13. This means preferably consists of a hook 14 which is pivoted as at 15 to the rim end 5 and which is movable so that its free end 16 engages the under surface of the tongue 12 and prevents the latter from moving out of the opening 13. The free end of the hook 14 is arranged to swing under the head of the stud 17 which is riveted or otherwise fastened to the rim end 5 adjacent the opening 13, and the free end of the hook 14- snaps onto the shank of the headed stud 17 so that the hook is maintained operatively positioned with its free end engaging the under surface of the tongue 12.
A circular stud or projection 18 may be formed on the attached portion of the plate 8 for reception in a socket in the permanent rim of the vehicle wheel in the usual manner whereby the demountable him is retained against circumferential movement or creeping relative said permanent rim.
In operation, the rim ends 5 and 6 are brought together so that the same abut as at 7, at which time the tongue 12 is brought into the opening 13 by an outward or radial movement of the end 6 of the rim. The hook leis then swung on its pivot 15 until its free end 16 is latched on the shank of the stud 17. The free end of the hook 1 1 then underlies the tongue 12 and effectively prevents the latter from moving out of the opening 13 in the rim section 5. It will thus be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and effective means for connecting the ends of split demountable rims and which may be very easily manipulated for disconnection of the rim ends when necessary.
It will, of course, be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, combination and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:-
1. In a demountable rim having abutting ends, an elongated plate rigidly secured to the under surface of one of said rim ends so as to project under the other rim end, said other rim end provided with an opening, the free end of said plate comprising a circumferentially projecting, outwardly offset portionadapted to seat in said opening with the outer and inner face thereof alined with the corresponding faces of said rim, said other end provided on its inner face, at a point adjacent said opening, with an inwardly projecting stud, an overhanging head on said stud, a hook pivoted to said other rim end so that the free end thereof may be swung under said head and over said outwardly oifset portion to hold the same in said opening.
2-111 combination with the abutting ends of a split demountable rim, a plate rigidly fastened to one of said ends and underlying the other end, an offset tongue formed on the free end of said plate, said other rim end being formed for reception of said tongue whereby separation of the rim ends is'prevented, a headed stud rigidly fastened to said other rim end, and a hook pivoted to the last named rim end and movable across the under surface of the latter, the free end of said hook being formed to snap onto the shank of said stud when underlying the tongue of said plate whereby said tongue is operatively maintained engaged with the said otherrim end. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
