UNITED STATES 1,448,778 PATENT OFFICE.
BERTHA A. UTTZ, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO W. A. UTTZ. OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
SASH LOCK.
Application filed January 24, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERTHA A. Ur'rz, a citizen of the United States. residing at Forth Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash locks; and the object is to provide a simple device for locking the upper and lower sash members, or either of them, in any position desired for ventilation and circulation of air and at the same time for preventing burglars or other persons of evil intent from entering a house through the window. Another object is to provide a device which is detachable and adjustable. the device not being attached at all to the window frame. Another object is to provide a simple device in compact form which can be carried in a suit case or hand bag for use on the windows of a hotel or other establishment so that a person can protect himself at night. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is bad to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1. is a broken sectional view of window sash and the frame therefor on which is shbwn in side elevation the improved lock. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the locking member of the upper sash. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the locking member for the lower sash. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the locking devices, being a view of the left side of the devices as shown in Fig.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The drawings show a frame 1 of a window and the upper sash member 2 and a. part of the lower sash member 3. The locking members 4 and 5 are mounted on a carrier 6 which has on one side a right ansled flange 7 which rests against a part 8 of the window frame. and on the other side a spring 9 which is attached to a lug 10 on the carrier 6 and bears against a stop 11. The carrier 6 can be positioned at any required height in the window frame because the Serial No. 531,338.
The lock for thelower sash consists of a blade member 5 and a shank member 12 which is slidably mounted in a keeper or loop 13 which maybe formed integralwith the carrier 6 or whichmay be brazed or soldered thereto. A plunger 14 is slidably mounted in a keeper 15 which may be may be formed integral with the carrier 6. The plunger 14 has a beveled head 16 for holding the shank 12 at different adjustments. The lower sash will be raised until it strikes the lower end of the plunger 14, but cannot be raised higher because the teeth on the blade member 5 will engage the stop 11. The plunger 14 has a foot flange or lug 17 against which the'lower sash will stop. The lock for the lower sash consisting of the toothed blade 5 and the shank 12 may be made integralv A stop 24 on carrier 6 prevents displacement of the lock member 5.
The lock for the upper sash consists of a pivoted bar 4 having a toothed blade 18 for engaging the frame of sash 2. The bar 4 is pivoted on the lug 19 which projects from the carrier 6. The bar 4 is manually operated to bring it in position for engaging the sash 2. The bar 4 carries a supplemental toothed blade 20 integral therewith. If the blade 18 does not stop the sash. the bar 4 will be pushed endwise. the slot 21 permitting the endwise motion. so that the blade 20 will engage the frame The sash will thus be doubly locked. An opening is made in the flange 7 for the passage of the blade 20. The flange 7 and the spring 9 have handles 22 for convenience in inserting the locking device in between the frame member R and the stop 11. The position of the sash cord 23 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The locking member 4 is provided with a handle 25 for cenrenience in positioning this member. Various changes in the construction of the several parts may be made without departing from my invention. It is apparent that this device may be inverted and need For the 5111116 purpose and partirularly in (use of a broken sash cord.
\Vhet I claim, is,- l. A sash loclrcioniprisnig a Carrier movable in all} part (if a window frlmefa loch ing member for the lower sash slidably mounted on said eurrieix n plunger to bearilmt'ed by the lower sash for causing szifid lm'li to engage a stop on the window [Ir-lune, and means earried by the lower sash for 21C- marine said plunger. i
2. A. stash lovk comprising H, carrier movable to any part oi 21 window mine and a spring {or holding said carrier in position after the carrier is located, 2L locking memher for the lower sash sliclahly mounted on said carrier, and a plunger provided with a foot piece to be aetualed by the lower sash lo runse said locking member to engage a stop on the Window frame.
3. A sash lock comprising a carrier movable to any part of a Window frame and a spring for holding said carrier in position after the carrier is located and a locking member pivolall connected to said carrier and provided with a locking blade adapted to engage the upper sash when the locking member is Sjill ljg into operative )os ifcion and proi'ided \Ylfih'fil snpplementalb ade for engaging the Window frame.
4-. A sash. lork Comprising a carrier niovable to any part of a Window frame and a spring 'l'prholding the carrier in place after it has been located, a locking member for the lower sash slidably mounted on the carrier and slidzible means mounted on the carrier fo'be engaged by the sash for causing, said locking member to engage a Stop on i ho window Frame. and a locking; member for the upper sash pivotally mounted on said ver fier and provided with one blade for emnigrin the upper sash and provided with supplemental blade for engaging the window frame.
In testimony whereof, I set my hand, this 19th day of January; 1922.
BERTHA A. UTTZ.
