IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,853, dated November25, 1873; application filed October 2, 1873.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. MARKER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Fastenings for Coach-Pads or Harness-Saddles, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, and in whichused in my improved fastening.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention relates to an improved method of fastening the skirt of a harness-saddle or -coach-pad to the plate of such saddle or pad,

so that it will be kept securely in place while, at the same time, it may be readily detached or attached.

By reference to the drawing, it will be seen that the plate, Fig. 1, is provided with a tongue, A, which projects below the opening B in the body of the plate, between the two flanged ends 0 and O of the plate. On the under side of the plate is the pad, secured to it by rivets a a. a, in the usual manner, and provided with the nut b, into which engages the pad-screw 0, shown in Fig. 3. A portion of the upper side of this'pad, with the nut, may be seen through the opening 13 in the plate, in Fig. 1, in which the skirt has been removed, so as to show the construction of the plate. D, Figs. 2 and 3, is the brace, shown in perspective and detached from the skirt in Fig.4. This brace is a piece of metal, having a raised middle, d, perforated by the hole 0, the two shoulders f f, and two corresponding flanges, g g. It is attached to the under side of the skirt by means of a rivet,

h, passing through the hole 0 and through the skirt under the housing E, or in any other suitable manner.

The mode of attaching the skirt to the plate will be readily understood from Fig. 3. The projecting flanges of the brace D are shoved up under the flanged ends 0 O of the plate, and between the under side of the plate and upper side of the pad, in such a manner that the raised shoulders f f of the brace D'will pass in, one on each side of the tongue A. The raised middle (I of the brace D, which is fastened to the under side of the skirt, will thus come over the tongue A, the shoulders f f, in combination with the flanged ends 0 O of the plate, preventing it, and of course the skirt, from moving sidewise, while the flanges g g of the brace D, in combination withthe flanged ends 0 O of the plate, prevent it or the skirt from moving upward from the plate.

The pad-screw 0 serves to prevent the skirt from slipping down, by which the fastening would become disengaged. After the brace D has been made to engage with the flanged ends of the plate, as described, it is shoved up until the hole z in the skirt comes just opposite the corresponding hole in the nut I), which latter is secured in the pad or tree under the-plate. The pad-screw c is then inserted and screwed home, in the usual manner, and the fastening is complete. To undo or loosen the fastening this process is simply reversed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described device for fastening the skirt to harness-saddles or coachpads, con.- sisting of a plate having the opening B, tongue A, and flanged ends 0 G, in combination with a brace, D, securely attached to the under side of the skirt, and having raised shoulders f f and flanges g g, which engage with the flanges O O and tongue A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A pad-plate for harnesssaddles or coachpads, constructed with the tongue A and flanged ends 0 O, with or without the opening 13, the said opening being cut in the plate to make room for the skirt, and secure it more effectually to the pad, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a harness or coach-pad plate, the opening B for accommodating the skirt, and fastening it more securely and directly to the pad, as set forth and described.

4. The brace D, consisting of a raised middie, d, the shoulders ff, and flanges g g, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
